Marten, Faye and Pintsize: Together Forever?
« on: 03 Jun 2016, 15:35 »

It recently occurred to me that if Marten and Claire ever get married (they're looking increasingly serious, and Marten is starting to seem mature enough), Claire probably would not want Pintsize and Faye living with them. Faye has a semi-steady job and several roommate prospects (plenty have theorized Bubbles, and I can see her eventually moving in with Hanners), but what about Pintsize? He's never been shown to live outside of Marten's financial support, so what would happen if he was forced to make his own living? Perhaps more importantly, what would he even be like without Marten to keep him relatively in check?

I can't see Marten kicking Pintsize out. After all, Pintsize is Marten's companion..practically his child.  Certainly Faye will eventually move,  but I am pretty sure Pintsize is forever unless he oversteps a line, or decides to return to the companion centre that he came from.

Maybe Pintsize would go with Faye?  I can see him deciding that she's the one who needs him more, and her actually being kind of fond of the little troublemaker.

What if Bubbles got (reluctantly) involved in taking care of Pintsize? Could strike upon a goldmine of silliness.
(Unless she knows how to reinstall Pintsize's laser, in which case, RUN LIKE THE WIND)

I've got to say that I'm not so sure about Claire wanting Pintsize gone. She seems to have a certain degree of affection for the little guy in her own right. I think that the question is whether Pintsize might consider Marten finding a life-mate represents 'mission accomplished' on his Companion AnthroPC contract. If so, he might decide that the time has come to move on for himself, although remaining in the social circle.

How would I handle it? Hmmm... I think I could see him using some of the money he's made from his work as the webmaster of an on-line porn archive to buy himself a chassis upgrade and go full-time with his side-business. Maybe he'll turn out to be rich enough to take over the lease on Veronica's apartment.

As for Faye, I can see her wanting to move out as she doesn't want to be a third wheel. This could be used as a vector to push the Bubbles character arc (Faye browbeats her into moving out of the arena and in with her) or even resuscitating her relationship with Sven.

A story about an Anthro PC completing its companion contract, Mary Poppins/Cat-in-the-Hat style, could be an interesting yarn.
The three companion APCs in the regular cast are Pintsize, Winslow, and Momo.

But of the three, the one that makes the most sense for such a story is Momo, not Pintsize.

Pintsize has an origin in early 00s webcomics, when every strip had a cute talking psycho critter sidekick. That may no longer be culturally relevant, but it's no reason to write him out of the strip entirely. He also had that one comic (can't look up # right now) where he flat out said (to Momo I think) that he'd done his bit for Marten and was content to sit back and proudly watch Marten spread his wings.

Winslow hasn't shown as much personality as the other two, and Hannelore seems the most in need of companionship and private emotional support.

Whereas Momo and Marigold have both developed as characters since we met them. Momo started as gag, then became a mascot character, and is now a whole person with roomates and friends and jobs, and also spokesperson for robot-centric stories. Marigold's also grown a lot, developed confidence and common sense, she doesn't need constant looking after, and she's got Dale too. So they seem already set up for a growing apart, but in a mature way, not like Harry and the Hendersons.
