2. Why are there no AI's on the street? There's apparently enough AI's in town to support the fighting rink, but the only ones we've ever seen out and about are in the cast.

A quick check has to me that Northampton has a population of just under 28,500. In today's comic we see 14 people besides Clinton on one very short section of street. 14 people would make up around 1/2000th of the population of the city and therefore no where near an accurate representation of the demographics of the city.

Likewise, the AI we have seen in the comic do not constitute an accurate representation of the AI demographics in Northampton. Bubbles, Punchbot and the other AI seem to be housed in specifically designed combat chassis. Meanwhile you have the likes of Corpsewitch who seem to embody the 50s/Robots film aesthetic with the stick thin arms. We have the Pintsize style AI, the small companion-types who presumably worked in a limited area such as an apartment.

Also, just because we don't see any AI in frame, doesn't mean they aren't there. We know that a great number of AnthroPCs reside in the Northampton area as evidenced by the party from when Marten and Faye moved into their current apartment, not to mention Winslow and Momo are and were a large tablet model and chibi model respectively. One can assume from that the a sizeable proportion of the AI population could still be running around in their original chassis, weaving in and out of the legs of the people on the streets.

....Not to mention that several of the apparent people could just be AIs in expensive chassis.

But someone who, as far as you know, has the ability to contact you but has chosen not to?

It's been a short enough time that a lack of contact so far hardly indicates a decision to never do so.

Yeah, I kind of knew that it was going to be something like this. Bun is sort of like a cat: You can only find her when you're not looking for her! I'm sure that some would regard this as a sign that they're 'meant to be'. To me, it's just a sign that Jeph likes to write his strips as basically a long running character-based sitcom like The Big Bang Theory.

Something tells me that the conversation in panel 5 will go on Brun's mental index card for Clinton as evidence for 'possible crazy guy'.

If only there were better ways (visually) to denote the tone, volume, timbre, and pitch of a character's voice in person.
(I may not always pick up on the visual social cues, but I'm pretty good at the audio ones).

Y'know, I've been trying to interpret Brun's expression in panel 4. Shocked at having run into someone, yes but, oddly enough, a little frightened (although that's gone by panel 5, mostly because she has to focus on Clinton's little detour into Crazyland).

I just feel that Brun has more than a few problems with crowds and situations where she hasn't got everything perfectly organised and categorised. Really, she's not sure she is entirely safe when she's walking around in a crowd of strangers, especially when doing something non-routine.

Additionally, notice what Clinton says about 'Claire laughing' at his misadventure. I think that's a reminder about how fraught and uncertain their relationship is; he expects her to mock him for his misfortune. FWIW, I think that she would be more likely to try to turn it into some kind of weird joke in an attempt to cheer him up but that may just be me.

In panels 2 and 5 Clinton & Brun look like they're the same height, but the way panels 3 and 4 are framed it looks like she is looking up at him and he is looking down at her.

Does that communicate something about their emotional states?


Clinton's posture and face very expressive the past few days, he's going through a range of emotions, though I can't always tell which ones are happening or why.

Come to think of it, in the past few months of storylines the characters faces/postures/actions are become more expressive all the time.  kudos to Jeph on continuing improvement in his technique.

That's the lovely thing about Brun; I really can't imagine her dissembling or shying away from anything in the name of 'being polite'. To her, 'being polite' is probably similar to 'lying' and I suspect that this is simply something that she is not psychologically able to do. The question is whether Clinton is personally psychologically able to deal with someone whose default mode of expression is so devastatingly direct!

It is, as Brun says, important in any relationship, no matter its context, to know where both parties stand.

I can't speak for anyone else, but that is one thing that always bothered by about certain aspects of being polite. In fact, sometimes "being polite" involves out right lying (usually to spare someone's feelings) according to others.
