Whatever! I don't celebrate Christmas! [/Scrooge]

FWIW, I think that we're going to have at least a few strips of Brun being Brun and making Eliot feel like he's on a whole different planet!

The pattern lately seems to be that the first three or four strips in a week deal with the same folks as the last strip of the previous week. Then for the last day or two of a week, we switch to someone else, who then become the main attraction next week.

So I'm guessing we'll have Brun, Renee, and Elliott for most of this week, and then someone else at the end -- might be about time for Emily and Clinton again, but who knows?

Hey, now! That's extra protein. I'm sure spiders fed on various insects fed on assorted baked goods and coffee beans make the coffee taste extra good.

Though, fried tarantula does taste quite a bit like smokey shrimp ("prawn"). Just don't eat the abdomen (it's gritty and bitter).

Edited due to a mix up of spelling systems thanks to tiredness.

Well, here we have it, folks: Hannelore has slipped into Faye's role at Coffee of Doom - She's the one who leads the establishment's attitude towards its customers. Additionally, she's the one who is Dora's in-house critic for the weird (and, frankly, FDA-defying) way she behaves sometimes.

That said... I genuinely wonder if no toasted spider in the beans will subtly affect the flavour of the coffee. She should ask Elliot to get the connoisseurs at TSB to fill out a form on the experience!

I find it hard to believe there could be a sufficient number of spiders roosting in the roaster to make any difference, making the assumption its used on a daily basis.

But new spiders hatch at a remarkable rate!

.... and this observation was definitely not prompted by the fact that last night I watchd Bilbo and a party of Dwarves fight the Mirkwood Spiders (aided by a couple of elves) on TV.

I would too if the spiders were in the filter or some other part of the process, but these were the ones nesting in the burner which means they've been burned to a crisp along with whatever germs they were carrying.

I would definitely drink a cup of Charlotte's Brood before I'd sample that coffee made with beans that cats pooped out.

Long-time residents of Pittsburgh complained that Iron City beer lost much of its flavor after the city cleaned up the rivers.

On the other hand the rivers are no longer health and fire hazards, so it may be a fair trade-off.

Fun fact: during the 1854 Broad Street cholera outbreak in London, several people who lived far from the poisoned well died from cholera and it turned out it was because they preferred the taste of the water from the cholera-tainted well. The source of the outbreak turned out to be from dirty diapers used by a baby that suffered from cholera.

So, uh, I guess the moral of the story is that if the most you have to worry about is spiders in your coffee, things aren't that bad?  :psyduck:

Maybe the side of Hannelore that sponsored a home for orphaned drumsticks will win out over the one that looked at her orbital bombardment app when she first found out about the spiders.

But it was tasty. And once you get it into a stew it's already boiled so not hazardous.

Not quite as simple as that. Whilst boiling will kill off bacteria, it may not have any effect at all on toxic chemicals the bacteria have already produced.

Not quite as simple as that. Whilst boiling will kill off bacteria, it may not have any effect at all on toxic chemicals the bacteria have already produced.

The delicious chemicals, you mean.

I'm always amazed and impressed (sorry if I've posted this before) when I think about the first people who looked at mushrooms, or blue vein cheese, and thought to themselves "mannn, I bet that is delicious."

Yet the lies of Melkor, the mighty and the accursed, Morgoth Bauglir, the Power of Terror and of Hate, sowed in the hearts of Elves and Men are a seed that does not die and cannot be destroyed; and ever and anon it sprouts anew, and will bear dark fruit even unto the latest days. I can't find anything about it (most results are for Whistlepig whiskey). Care to PM me the vineyard?

I too must learn more about this porcine wine.

Agreed; much more likely, IMO, is that the first tasters of many of these things were in the situation of "well... I can try eating this, and maybe die, or I and/or my family will literally starve."

Most of us - most - are fortunate to have never been in that position.  But a lot of humans through history, up to the present day, have not been so lucky.

(there's probably a few drunken dares involved, too.)

Extra Credits did a 5 part installment on the Broad Street Pump for their 'Extra History' series.
I studied Messrs. Snow and Whitehead in Maths!

Then I recommend not looking up the story behind why one wine company now seals a whole pig in their wine casks.
In China there is 蛇酒 (shéjiǔ or "snake wine") which is a big bottle of baijiu with a dead snake in it. If your wallet (and stomach) can stand it, there is also snake-blood cocktail, where the bartender kills a live snake in front of you :-(, and mixes its blood with your drink. Nope, nope, nope...
