Yeah, now I'm definitely thinking we're getting a murder mystery.

And I'm calling Hank the Dismemberer in the Diagnostic Lab with the Pipe Wrench.

I'd wager that's CW's way of letting him know she overheard his exchange with Bubbles.

CW is a classic Smug Snake.

According to the trope, the Smug Snake nearly always gets his/her comeuppance.

I really think that the only thing Jeph could do to make Corpse Witch's alignment more obvious is to have someone standing on-panel with a sign reading "Boo! Bad 'Bot!" whenever Corpse Witch is featured.

As for Jeremy, we're just being reminded that Corpse Witch doesn't really do 'employee feedback' except when it's self-confirmation (and silence will do for her). She didn't really want an answer and, even if he did something like yaw his optic back and forth as if he were shaking his head, I suspect it was disbelief and disgust at her rather than saying that she isn't too smug.

People who think that they've got it all figured out are usually the ones who are the most surprised when they find that, as Bubbles put it in panel 2, that the leash has snapped. Of course, that's another clear warning that Corpse Witch seems to be ignoring in her certainty that she's won.

I wouldn't be feeling all too smug that I was only holding on to my key employee through blackmail. The thing about blackmail is that if you push it too hard, the victim will start wondering how much worse it could be on the other side...

If you have to ask if you're too smug, then yeah, you're  too smug.

Speculated Plot Twist (but is it a twist?): Every AI at the rink is there under less-than-honest circumstances. We know that Bubbles is being blackmailed, but perhapse it's the same deal with all of them.  Maybe Jeremy was involved in a factory accident and CW is protecting him from the law?

I do believe Jeremy knows the value of silence when required.

I've got to say that the more I see of Bubbles, the more I realise some things she just does by inherit nature and can't stop doing it. Looming is one of them as is looking like she's about to discuss how she witnessed the trigger of the end of the world.

Jeph is stretching out the interval here, which makes me think he wants to put The Bubbles Talk into one week. Either it's long or he thinks it would be cruel to force us to endure across a weekend break for the next instalment.

Meanwhile, I've got to say that he 'Steve eats cereal' joke is getting a bit old.

Steve doesn't just eat cereal, he also cracks a joke. It's a knee-slapper, too!

I just wonder how B is going to explain her situation to FW. It could be awkward with MR around. He might casually excuse himself with CA, but I think FW would probably like his moral support.

So, do we know the canonical heights of the characters?

I don't think anything canonical is known. Some eagle-eyed forumites have posted estimates, but also pointed out minor inconsistencies. Bubbles is particularly challenging, because not all the settings can easily accomodate an 8ft tall character. So whenever Jeph wants to keep all of her head visible in a setting where that is only possible with her locks within 7ft 6inches of the floor, it may be prudent to assume that she is bending her knees a bit.

As a fairly tall guy (about 6' 3"), i have to say that it kind of becomes second nature to bend at the knees or cock your head. I don't want to think what it would be like to be almost 8' tall.

I don't think Jeph has ever stated numerical values. There are only relative heights to other characters (and, as Skewbrow pointed out, considerable inconsistencies with regard to heights relative to scenery). What we do know is:

Tiny - Pintsize and Winslow
Petite - Claire, Brun, Momo, May and Tai
Short - Clinton
Shorter-than-Average - Corpse Witch, Hannelore and Faye
Average - Dora, Marten and Steve
Tall - Veronica and Sven
Gigantic - Elliott
Valkyrie - Bubbles

Add Emily to the "tall" category. Penelope is shorter than Emily but taller than Dora. Cosette fits into the "petite" category. Dale is almost as tall as Elliot but not nearly as gigantic.

Recent comics with Hannelore in the new art style make her seem a lot taller than before and I'm not sure why.  I can't find a good example now that I'm thinking of it though.

Elliott isn't even that much taller than Sven/Emily, he's just twice as wide. I think it was 6'3 for Sven, 6'4 for Emily and 6'6 for Elliott in several ballpark estimates.

I think it's been mentioned on several occasions (maybe even on her spec sheet?) that Bubbles is 8ft tall tho.

It would be interesting if Steve did turn up, and it turns out that Bubbles and Steve know each other.  After all Steve apparently works, or has worked, with a government agency that would likely need the assistance of US military assets from time to time.

The height discussion yesterday seems particularly appropriate today. Is it me or is Bubbles getting progressively taller? I mean, she's nearly double Faye's height in panel one!

I do hope that the talk doesn't get too technical. I'm a believer in using technobabble handwave that sounds somewhat internally-consistent rather than doing months of research for two speech bubbles' worth of exposition.

FWIW, I wouldn't have had Marten on panel saying that he's going out. It isn't necessary and lampshades the fact that he's a bit of a third wheel in the following mini-arc a bit too much, almost to the point of breaking the suspension of disbelief. He can just not be there and we can take it as read that he's either gone out or is in his room playing the guitar using headphones or something.

Maybe some future plot development relies on the fact that Marten  didn't hear this conversation.

Also (and the way it sruck me first) it's trying to wring a little more comedy from Marten's stuggle mentally to take on board what's going on.

She might have had a late growth spurt. She's only ~23 years old after all. (She turned 22 at her birthday in 1069, but we've had some timeskips after that.) I know I had one after I moved away from my parents to university, which means I was ~21 at the time.

questionable cereal content?
I never trust those little bits and bobs that sink and never resurface in my cereal...

As for the story; if it is possible to lock memories away, how would you know? Because they tell you they locked part of your memory? Could it be there is nothing locked away? Or just the memory of a chopping list? Could the whole 'I have something on you but you can't remember' be a lie? Could Corps Witch be telling fibs?

It depends how AIs record memories. However, I would imagine that they would be aware of a chunk of their lives where they cannot remember where they were or what they did.

Bubbles could have made a recording of herself explaining what she did and why it would be a bad idea to unlock those memories.

As Ido Daisuke did in Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita (which we know Jeph is a fan of).
I also seem to remember the Major reintegrating some memories in a Ghost in the Shell series episode. Cannot remember if it was SAC or Arise, though.

I have a mental image of a video file of Bubbles, sitting in a high-backed wing chair in front of a roaring log fire, stroking a white persian cat which is wearing a diamond collar.

BUBBLES: "Hello, Bubbles; I am you... or rather the person you were... before. I know why you are here and what you think it will achieve. I am here to tell you that cannot possibly imagine how wrong you are. I am going to ask that you delete the encryption key and move on with your life, if not for you... then for the memory of the memory of Lise Yates!"

Yes, a Red Dwarf reference; what can I say? A classic is a classic!

Recent comics with Hannelore in the new art style make her seem a lot taller than before and I'm not sure why.  I can't find a good example now that I'm thinking of it though.
She might have had a late growth spurt. She's only ~23 years old after all. (She turned 22 at her birthday in 1069, but we've had some timeskips after that.) I know I had one after I moved away from my parents to university, which means I was ~21 at the time.
I started reading the comic about a decade ago when I was younger than everyone and I hadn't given much thought to the fact that I'm now older (at 29) than everyone except possibly Sven. I guess it's like how Bart in season one is now older than present day Homer.

Marten leaving makes so much sense in context. He is probably still afraid of Bubbles at a level below conscious control ("Does the name 'Pavlov' ring a bell?") and more to the point is considerate enough that someone having a deeply personal heart-to-heart doesn't need to explicitly ask "Could you excuse us for a while?".

It will really be an interesting change if Marten is not the one Faye turns to after The Bubbles Talk.
