He is Bembo, and he is wearing a cloak but no shirt in the Brutal Winter Mountains. The lizard's not the only one flirting with hypothermia.

The hypothermia ate his pants, giving the lizardman time to run away and meet Bembo.

A hypothermia is a sort of cold-climate hypopotamus, right?

The poll is sort of an exercise in memory for those of us who followed Jeph's on-line writing of this week's strips on Twitter about a month back.

Meanwhile... Poor Lizardman needs a hug. Unfortunately for him, Bembo only needs a new set of boots.

What's the completion of Bembo's thought in panel 3? It seems like he's about to say that the claimed otherworldly beauty standards of tall, thin, blonde, caucasian are mundane and thus readily obtainable and not unrealistic.

Naw, he's about to say adhering to only one standard of beauty is too rooted in this world -- in fact, to one place and time in this world -- to qualify as "otherworldly." Apparition Lady seems to require reassurance otherwise.

Bembo, don't disagree with the nice, pretty lady with god-tier magic.

At least we know where Fairy Girl hangs out when she isn't being pursued by Emily! Bonus points if, in some future strip, Emily corners her in a bar and is introduced to a QC-ised Bembo who is her boyfriend.

With a little further thought, I can see it, kind of.  Consider what she might look like to a member of an actual Bronze Age society:  unusually tall, very pale, teeth "unnaturally" white and even, hair perfectly in place, no calluses, breasts more like bowls glued to her chest than proper sagging teats, etc... and what is that fabric she's wearing?

From a certain point of view, as the saying goes, she could look more like a Grey alien in lipstick than a "real" woman.

Agreed.  And I have to wonder if Alice Grove's Gavia had introduced herself in a less hostile manner she might have convinced the townspeople she was a fairy instead of a demon.

The only difference between faerie and demons, when you actually read up the mythology, is that faerie are typically better at selling themselves as creatures of wonder and good whose activities are 'harmless tricks' rather than atrocities. In practice, that ability to deceive actually makes them a bit worse than Cthulhu and his tentacle-bros in pure ethical terms.

Wasn't Ancient Rome a Bronze Age society? And yet they were highly civilized. (And most people's teeth were in excellent shape until sugar became a major part of human diets around 200 years ago.)

No. The bronze age ended with the discovery of iron smelting about 1000 BC.

No. Mycenaean Greece was as was Ancient Egypt. Roman culture did not arise till long after the replacement of bronze with iron.

It's earliest form (Kingdom to the Republic) was about ~500 BCE and grew on the strength of their iron swords.

The Etruscans were smelting iron armor and weapons while the Romans were still bronze. They helped form Rome and then were conquered and absorbed into the growing Empire. They took over a lot of the priesthood duties.

Airborne wolf attack! Well, if nothing else, Bembo has redefined the bad news that a wolf can mean for a farmer!

It's the nonplussed look on the wolves faces that gets me! "Why is mad giant human carrying me around?"

Idiot barbarian makes a good point. It would be nice to see some dark skinned fairies, maybe with different wing shapes and colours....
In Chinese folk-stories, and the films derived from them, fairies usually have no wings at all, flying instead by supernatural means. They just appear as beautiful girls in vaguely Tang-dynasty robes, until they turn into foxes, deer, snakes, swarms of bees etc.

Bembo is a "catch and release" barbarian. The farmer used to be an adventurer like you, until he took a wolf-bite to the knee.

Maybe Bembo's character was inspired by Corporal Carrot Ironfoundersson?

How did Angua put it? "One needs a very complex interior life to appear that uncomplicated":? (GoGo Discworld-quotation-miners!)

What is keeping the Wolf Queen's crown on her head in the last panel? Glue? Pins? The power of funny? I think it would have been funnier if it had fallen off.

A talking wolf, standing on her hind-legs, holding a sceptre and irately scolding a Barbarian who just lobbed her subject pack at a farmer ...

... but what snaps your suspenders of disbelief is the fact that her crown doesn't fall off?  :-o
