Your comment is phrased as "someone built like Renee". That is commenting on everyone with that same body type.

As Method said, you can call out the improper behaviour of characters but don't then repeat that improper behaviour.

Comic's up...

And I'm not quite sure what just happened.

This strange new person has an elbow tattoo like Tai's, but if this is Tai she has a VERY new look.

If she had glasses, it'd be a lot easier to accept her as Tai, but...I dunno. It just doesn't look like her at all, even if it's clearly supposed to be.

I love Questionable Content. It explores deep, meaningful relationships, sensitively handles conflict and drama, explores intriguing technological possibilities, and lightens everything with a great sense of humour.

And I'm sorry, but Tai has tiny baby arms in this strip and I can't stop seeing iiiiiit

Tai really needs to get over her own insecurities.  It's like she can't handle not being the centre of Dora's attention.

Thought this as well, but upon viewing various previous versions, most recently 3357 and 3328, I can find only 3 major differences. The lack of glasses, the hair (which I suspect was Jeph trying something new stylistically), and in the final panel her head shape is slightly rounder than usual.

Firstly, this is the first occasion that I've seen in the strip where Jeph has chosen to use one of the characters to act as a mouthpiece to apologise to the audience for one of his characters and try to explain why he or she isn't so bad.

Secondly... Since when is Tai buff? Since when has Tai been completely redesigned to the point where she is unrecognisable if it weren't for her elbow tattoo? This isn't art evolution, this is radically changing how the character looks! Um... I'd also like to know why she was passed out on the counter until she reacted to Elliott's words but something tells me that I don't want to hear how crazy a job in a library can get some days. I'm thinking that the body-building thing was some kind of response on her part to Dora telling her that Faye looked hot now she was more muscular but still the head has been totally redesigned!

That aside, I'm wondering if this is some kind of ritual the body-proud have about which I am unaware. Given Dora's reaction, I'm pretty sure that it happens frequently.

The hair reminds me of Becky from Dumbing of Age. The rest of her... if I hadn't noticed the elbow tattoo, I would have had no idea who this was.

As I said in my post above, I think that Tai has been making a conscious effort to mimic Faye after Dora told her that she felt her new look was attractive. It would fit in with Tai's personality to feel a bit threatened by this into reworking her body a bit and giving up some of her previous androgynous look to something approaching Faye's current 'back-street tough' aesthetic.

I have said before that I think Tai had a lot of body image issues arising from the issues her sexual identity provoked in high school. Being in a relationship with Dora has cured some of them so we might also be seeing the 'real' Tai emerging without all the extra sartorial measures she used to take to hide herself away.

That's an angle I hadn't thought of when I made my post.  It's more than just a "No Dora pay attention to meeeee" in the present (which is one of the reasons Tai just annoys me), but especially with the haircut I can totally see it.

>>> Summarily ignores all following posts that have nothing to do with the actual subject at hand <<<

Not so ironic if you actually think about it a bit.
Most critics, auditors, inspectors, editors, etc., whose job is it to look at and review the works of others do that as part of their jobs.
I know a couple of people who are master taste testers yet they can neither roast beans to perfection or age spirits to mellow ambrosia.
They know what they are looking at and can appreciate the subtleties and details of the subject even if they themselves can not achieve such on their own.
Even teaching involves knowing enough about the subject to see and point out errors or misconceptions on the part of the students as they learn yet doesn't require the talent to create.

Artwork, which there is a lot of online, from the professional to the aspiring amateur, gets criticized / complemented by pretty much anyone who sees it.
Yet there is no hue and cry that a non-artist liked something by Boris even though the sight lines are all over the place and the subjects wouldn't last 30 seconds in a real battle with the beasts as depicted, dressed they way they are.
See, I just critiqued an aspect of the art itself and the subject matter yet I do not paint or wear fantasy armor and yet I have the gall to make an informed critique on the subject matter. :-D

Thrudd, you have brought up a point that I did not consider at all. Though I do think that the best critics and teachers are ones who are skilled in and have a deep understanding/practice of the subject.

All that said, I think it is just one more subtle way in which Renee shows how much of a hypocrite she is. One of the first times we get to know her, she is calling Marten and Steve out on how much they suck at romantic interactions. It's pretty clear now how much she also sucks at them.

We see her acting like she has her shit together so much more than Brun but she is only more stable right now because Brun lost her home and job simultaneously in a fire. Brun has shown initiative in her applications and seems more socially adapted than Renee. She understands why Renee shouldn't have teased Elliot and she judged Clinton's character pretty well. In fact, everybody seems to like her. So what her personality is a little odd? She is well adjusted.

The fact that she makes a back-handed compliment of Elliot's body is just another example. Elliot is clearly in great shape - evident not just by looks but his skills and stories as a bouncer. Meanwhile, Renee doesn't appear to be in good shape.

I stated my agreement with him because I thought the reaction to his comment was unfair. Obviously some people disagree, which is their right. I generally just respond rather than make comments because of such reactions. Though I do understand it is your job to keep the peace, which is appreciated :)

I didn't ask for a justification, making snide remarks about the appearances of characters is no better than making them about our members, and this forum doesn't allow it.

There's no need to justify my first comment. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on the snideness of the comment. No disrespect intended to you by any of my statements.  I'm just here to enjoy QC discussion

I didn't recognise Tai when I first saw her in this strip.

She has buffed up a bit and looks considerbly different from the adorable pixie shw was when we first met her.

I really don't think Tai has much to worry about as far as Dora goes, I get the impression that Dora is very settled wit her and is a lot happier person than she was when she broke up with Marten.

Next up,, the Grand Opening of the CoD Gym and Climbing Centre.

Hop in and have fun!

I really enjoyed your connecting all the places where Renee has been critical of people when she should have removed the log from her own eye first.

Just consider what Tai was doing when we first met her.  She was binding her breasts to make herself look more boyish, and in fact in strip 973 she mentions passing as a boy in the past.  Maybe it had something to do with the girls she was interested in at the time.  Someone with better archive fu than me will have to find where she stopped doing so.  So maybe she's always been shaping herself to what she perceives her partners wanting, and this is another example.

I'm pleasantly bemused by Tai in the first and second panels. Potentially in the way of customers, seemingly asleep on the counter but immediately awoken and aware of her partner giving positive attention to someone else. There's a lot of personality in two panels.

Reminds me a little of the behaviour of my two dogs (not saying Tai is a dog!) in that if you give attention to one then the other will generally insert himself between you and his brother to get more attention

okay - somebody seems a little unhappy not being a buff badass - still cardboard is better than him getting his mitts on another laser.  :psyduck:
