I'm thinking that, on a certain level, Claire wanted a negative response. It's a bit like when she told her mother she had gone on a date with Marten and then reacted angrily to a fairly passively approving response. She wanted to be told that it was too early or too dangerous for her to be doing things like this. There is a part of Claire that very much seems to want to rebel against something... against anything really.

A lot of her frustration in today's strip might be due to the fact that she's unable to get a reaction that would enable her to stand up and shout: "Look at me! Hear me roar!"

Probably Claire wasn't expecting the phlegmatic response. At best there'd be affirmation ("oh sweet! Do you need any furniture?") or, if Clairemom were anything like my MIL, shocked silence. At the very least, Clairemom might just acknowledge in some way that this is a big step for Claire. After all, when Marten said it was OK for Claire to officially move in, Claire's first impulse was to run off through the cold to tell Mom.

It's as if you went out and bought a laser pointer to play with your cat, and the cat just ignored it.

I like Claire's Mom shes cool.  I think Claire had built up this list of arguments as to why se is going to move in with Marten, and is kinda let down she didn't get the chance to use them.

Just as an aside, would being allowed to play Clairemoms Guitar be considered getting to first Bass with her?

That was a bit of a stretch, you should retune your punnage.

I prefer the original punchline to that comic before Jeph changed it.

Yeah, I have a friend who married young. The upside was that her son was out of the house when she was 37. Then it was time to catch up on all the partying she had missed.

Me, I married at 38 and my son was born when I was 39. (As was his mother - she and I are about two weeks apart in age.) There are pros and cons to that approach too.
Any tips on how to get one's mother to stop nagging them about grandchildren?

Give them grandchildren? I mean rent a really hyperactive and energetic kid, like a nightmare kid and let them babysit for a day and imply that's going to be a regular occurrence.

Claire displays no sign that her mother playing a bass guitar complete with amps is out of the ordinary.  We've seen that there's more going on than you think.  Wonder if she was in a band and getting back into the swing of things.

If you have siblings, you can try to direct the attention that way. I also used the tactic of bluntly and repeatedly stating my absolute lack of desire to have children and my Partner's similar feelings. It took a while but it's not a conversation any more. At least for a couple years. Finally, get a dog or other pet and say that's the closest they're getting.

Not sure that will work. I'm the middle of 3 brothers, myself and my younger brother are high functioning autistic, he's ADHD, and I'm ADD.

She does it to all three of us.
My older brother tried the dog thing. Didn't work.

I'd like to eventually get married and have kids, but I've been single for almost a decade. But the dating pool gets MUCH shallower when you reach your 30s.

Less choice can make the choosing much easier!  Ask any soviet-era Russian or Pole... or East German.  Too much choice can be overwhelming.

You can learn a lot about a person's personality from their personal spaces. In Claire's case, we see lots and lots and lots of books (which should surprise no-one). However, it was her pin-board that caught my attention:

We see what looks like a schedule; that's almost certainly her college schedule and it reminds us that she's Ms Organisation. There is a picture of what looks like a building; I've got no clue what that could be. Finally, there are also a few pictures of redheaded children; that could be Clinton but an odd thought occurred to me: What if it's Claire herself? Why would she have pictures of herself as a child? Well, in one of the pictures, she's shown wearing pink. This is just a weird idea that I have in my head but I'm wondering if they're reminders to her that she was a girl long before she started her physical transition.

The final picture, which might be of her when somewhat older (note the glasses), seems to show her with a punky hairdo and wearing a black turtle-neck. Like I said yesterday, I wonder if there has always been a part of Claire that has been a rebel looking for something to rebel against.

Finally, there is Mr Bun-bun, who I am sure was a great friend to young Claire. I'm wondering if that was a Calvin and Hobbes (Suzie in C&H had a stuffed white rabbit) reference but that's a bit of a stretch, I think.

Setting my brain-storming aside, I can't help but wonder if Bubbles' personal journal for the day will include something along these lines: "Today, I invented a new form of recreational pursuit - Freestyle furniture riding."

Now I think of it I can't really imagine wanting to move clothes and not at least a reasonable subset of books.

I'm afraid I won't be much help there, since my mother died years before I was married and already had eleven grandchildren anyway. As for my mother-in-law, she already had four grandkids when I met her and we gave her a fifth fairly quickly.

Actually, come to think of it, the only one who ever bugged me about having kids was one of my nephews, when he was four. He wanted more cousins (as if he needed more cousins.)

Something else I noticed on Claire's pin-board - the tassel from her graduation cap. I don't know how common it is to keep and display that in the US.

This isn't the first time that Marten and Claire have made a "big" announcement and gotten an underwhelmed response either.

I prefer the original punchline to that comic before Jeph changed it.

That might have been before my time here... what was the original?

When Jeph originally put up the strip he forgot that MartenMom had already seen them on their first date so he changed the dialogue in the last panel:

Ms Reed: I saw it coming from a mile away, dear.
Marten: You could've given me some advance warning then!
Claire: Well I enjoyed the surprise.

I think it fits better with the setup beforehand.

She could've still been claiming to have seen it coming even before she saw them holding hands, even as far back as the wedding. That's how I took it, honestly. Still think changing it was the wrong decision, but alas, wasn't my decision to make :parrot:

I would say that Claire will move some, not all  of her stuff over to Martens.  I doubt that he as all that much room for both his and her stuff, which will give Claire (and Marten) a reasonable excuse to divide time between the Apartment and Claiemoms home

Looks like Claire gets to have all the fun in this move.

Or do you mean the H-string lacking 'punch' due to the scale being too short? In that case: Tune to C, use it as thumbrest, "live with it", or buy a LeFay
Get thee to the guitar-nerd thread where you belong!

I really love the perspective in 3468. And it looks as if Claire and her mother are moving in opposite directions on hair. Perhaps some Law of Conservation of Floof is involved?

How many people would call that piece of furniture a "dresser"? To me, it would be a "chest of drawers", while a "dresser" would be wider than it is tall, with at least two columns of drawers. If Faye and Bubbles's robot-repair business doesn't take off, Bubbles would make a great mover.

I really hope that Claire's mom does have an interesting rock star past and at some point crossed paths with Veronica without ever knowing it.  It'll make the inevitable meeting of the parents all the more enjoyable.

I would use dresser and chest of drawers interchangeably. I tend to only use chest of drawers though.

What, Marten, none of your friends have a car that can handle that dresser? Heck, my old '92 Escort hatchback would have had no problem with it, and it was not a large car. Fold down the rear seats, maybe use a couple of bungee cords if the hatch won't close completely, and presto.

For that matter, your old pal Jimbo probably has a pickup truck that could handle that dresser just fine. But maybe you never bothered to get his phone number?

Going back to Claire's mum being chill, I'm reading through old comics and this seems to be a recurring theme with them.

It's interesting. I wonder if this is a parenting tactic.

But you wouldn't have a nice setup to have Bubbles lifting a dresser and carrying it their apartment with Claire riding atop.

Strip is up and in fairness it would be the universe as Pintsize knows it.

So, the new strip is up and Pintsize has had an epiphany of sorts. One that I think he is going to find life-changing. For the very first time, "she'll kill you" isn't a metaphor for a serious beating or being welded to a wall; it really does refer to being smashed into unsalvageable scrap!

I wonder if he'll be able to adapt to his new reality?
