Rasslin' Thread
« on: 08 Apr 2014, 05:16 »

Hi folks!

I know at least some people on here - off the top of my head, other than me there's Method and Welu and I think cesium? - who watch wrestling, and it'd be nice to have a thread on here where people talk about the rasslin' too.

Seems like an appropriate time to start given that we just had Wrestlemania XXX, so for those who're into wrestling, what were everyone's thoughts?

I'll put mine in spoilers in case anyone hasn't watched it yet.

I watch, though I watch less now than my sons do.  It kind of stopped being as entertaining to me as it used to.  Maybe that's just me getting older.  Not sure.

As for Wrestlemania XXX

Anyway, that's all I got.

Alright, I've got to post here because, frankly whoever is writing for the WWE these days seems to have lost any sense of how to respond/react to the fanbase.  I watched Money in the Bank, and I'm telling you right now they missed a HUGE opportunity to give Roman Reigns the push that the fans so desperately want him to get.  The crowd pop that he got when he speared Cena near the end was one of the loudest I've heard in recent years.  YEARS!

They seriously need to pull their heads out of their asses, because in times past they would have not only picked up on that, they might have shifted gears mid-match and given him the win.

I don't watch much of the WWE thing. Like, at all. But, I have say, those men have to be in serious shape and shouldn't be afraid of some pain. They're pretty impressive. I wonder what their training routine is like.

Also, this Cena fellow does a lot of visits for make-a-wish, so that's aces.

A lot of visits? Cena holds the world record for most wishes granted. It's over 1000.

Also, I don't want them to hotshot Reigns to the belt. I don't think he's ready yet. He's good on the mic, good in the ring, and very over, but he's also light years behind even his fellow ex-Shield members.

Hopefully Cena only has the title so that Brock'll murder him at Summerslam.

Yeah, I take nothing from Cena at all.  He's not a favorite of mine, but he does a lot of good for a lot of kids, and when you hear him on a mic even away from the WWE, that dude is pretty cool.  He's very real, or at least, very good at faking it.

For what Cena does for the kids, I don't really care about his real life motivations. Charity work that makes a positive difference is charity work as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah - agreed.  My original post didn't need the qualifications - he's a good guy.  I blame it on sleep deprivation.

That gif is great.  No he's not winning as much - but something seems off with their writing lately.  How bad really is the 'evil corporate' image if everyone so openly resists them and gets away with it?  They haven't built up the bad guys nearly enough to make them hated in this scenario.  Heels make the wrestling world go 'round as it were, but they are seemingly so eager to let the good guys win pretty easily.  That wouldn't have happened in years past.

Battleground was a placeholder ppv from top to bottom and whether it's fair or not WWE needs to understand that nothing else in the company represents stasis quite like John Cena pulling out virtually the same finish in consecutive ppvs. I understand that Rollins-Ambrose is white hot and deserving of a Summer Slam co-headliner slot but delaying that bad boy did nothing to dispel the notion that their current PPV schedule does more harm than good to the storytelling.

There is a working theory that Rollins got injured on Raw the Monday before the show, I've not seen anything to confirm it though.

Yeah, it's pretty much impossible to be certain whether that was an injury scare or a work from the outside looking in. Seth hopped up and down the turnbuckle at the PPV and Ambrose mugged him a few times but within that business such shenanigans don't rule out a mild to moderate sprain and his ring gear would easily let him wear an ace wrap without us knowing.

What are people thinking of the split? I'm generally not a fan of splitting the roster but more because it won't last and becomes pointless sooner or later but this time it seems to be doing a lot of good. Admittedly, I wasn't watching so much during the last split. The last couple shows have been the best in a while in my opinion, both in matches and mic time. Appears there's a little less restriction to stay family friendly which adds some teeth to the back and forth but without being so loose as to be crass (so far...)

That Universal title nonsense is bollocks though.

I am massively in favour of the split in principal, but they need an influx of new talent to make it work. They also should have waited until after Summerslam so that the Orton/Brock business could be finished rather than blowing the first inter-brand feud within a week of the split happening.

I am cautiously hopeful that this is a new dawn for WWE, given that Triple H has been off TV since Mania, Steph is showing up less, they gave Mick a clipboard so he stops forgetting his lines and it's a way to have Bryan on TV without wrestling.

The last few weeks between the CWC (which you NEED to fucking watch, anyone who likes wrestling), NXT and the brand split I am more engaged with wrestling than I have been in forever.

I've watched the first two CWC and they've been fantastic. NXT keeps going under my radar because days need more hours. I will get back on to it though.

WWEUK tournament was quality stuff. For the record, I'm gutted Tucker didn't get further because I've seen him live at my local(ish) promotion and that was an amazing match. Hopefully if they do a regular UK thing we'll see more of all them but also no because there's too many goddamn shows and I don't have any more weekly hours to spare, WWE.

I loved the tournament. Peter Dunne is something else, never seen anything quite like him. Like a human shark that mated with everyone that bullied you at school.

Many great talents in that tournament.

The Tucker match was good. Tucker is an overwhelmingly shit name for a wrestler though. Why would you pay to see 'Tucket'? At least Peter Dunne is a full name.

Names of some others in the promotions: "Northern Irish Nightmare" Tron. (Who is tag champ with Tucker) "Session Moth" Martina. Jesus (luchador). B Cool. Phil the Thrill. Dunkan Disorderly.

Notable tag team names: Best Friends Club. Lads from De Flats. The Bad Guys. The Strip Club. Tequila Mockingbirds.

I love all these people, PWU and OTT. Tucker is my baby boy and I love him. Also I'm going to this event and I can't wait. Link is to a Facebook video.

One week to Mania, party people.

And the first time I haven't got to watch it live in years, because being a teacher now means I can't take time off in term time, goddammit.

It just feels wrong to not get to stay up and watch it live with my brethren. But I guess that's my life now? Given my aspirations as a teacher.

The card looks pretty wank though.

Orton vs. Bray (loved the angle, the match will suck)
Brock vs. Goldberg (huge fan of both guys, especially Brock, but I don't see this being good)
The Club (sigh) vs. Cesaro Sheamus (woo) vs. Enzo and Cass (woo, but overexposed) - probably be pretty good, potential show stealer
Neville vs. Austin Aries (SHUT UP AND TAKE ALL MY FUCKING MONEY)
Cena/Nikkie vs. Miz/Maryse (another example of a great angle that will likely lead to a dog wank match)
Kevin Owens vs. Jericho (another potential show stealer if they give it enough time)
Smackdown Women's invitational (I smell an old school comeback winning the title without warning)
Undertaker vs. Reigns (BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to both of them)

Have a lot of similar feelings unfortunately. Except I will be there in person so it'd be very hard to not at least enjoy it at the time.

Also Shane VS AJ is a big Huh??

My big prediction of the show is Cena/Nikki will win and then John will propose.

Got home a bit ago from watching at a friend's. My first Wrestlemania (and PPV event).

For the moment, just wheeeeeeeee

though boy I was feeling like an old, old woman by the time we got to the last few matches.

Only saw from the royal rumble in the pre-show matches onward. Fairly satisfied with a lot of what I saw, even if I'm realllly out of touch. Went through several "he's still alive?" and "he's still working?" and "shut up michael" moments.

I'll leave details to another time because tiiiired. but hope you all had fun, and Welu & co get home safe!

Especially if it ends up being the same result, which I'm guessing it will, then it's WWE backpedaling and going, "No! See, we fixed it and made it right!" but no. You already fucked up. There can't be another first.
If it's a different result, then that has its own issues too. If it was the plan all along then what was the point? Or is it to punish the wrestler for the backlash for acting out someone else's decision?

In happier RASSLIN news, here's a cute Instagram about Taker's daughter watching Roman Reigns on RAW.

Quote
Watching "boom boom" when Roman's music hit (before he came out).....K: "booo.....daddy say BOO, he beat you!!! Next time just punch him in the face, kick him between the eyes then use your muscles to hold him down to count to 3! If he tries to move, just push him back down. Seriously, that's all you have to do. Ok, daddy?!" 👊🏼🤣#justlikethat
