This week's story thread - What do you want? (Choose two options)

Faye and Bubbles spend several weeks trying out May through dozens of bizarre possible roles at Union Robotics
A giant flying leaf crashes on the outskirts of Northampton and a very, very disoriented Alice staggers out
Clinton tells Claire about his view of the Bubbles/Faye relationship; comedic misunderstanding follows
Momo and May tell Faye the story of Charlie and Calcula, the first human and AI to marry
Steve and Cosette are marched into a wedding planner's office by Tortura
Padma comes to Northampton to persuade Renee to be her matron of honour
Marten and Claire TRY to have a date night; complications ensue due to their friends' chaotic lives
Spookybot approaches Emily for a dog-sitting gig but there is very obviously a hidden agenda
Brun and Elliott have an agonising conversation about what to do if you feel attraction to someone
Other (please specify in a comment)

Okay, I tried to be as original as possible (and a bit more concise) this week.

I'd really, really love for some world-building about one of the few robot/human romances that went all the way - All the way to the Judge who carried out the civil ceremony, actually. I don't know if Jeph would do that but, if he did, a optimist/cynic telling of the story by Momo and May would be an interesting way to do it.

My suggestion? Charlie was a clerk at a big bank; Calcula was the non-embodied AI that ran the bank's 24/7 stock market trading system. Charlie, being a dedicated kind of guy, often worked night shifts. He and Calcula had nothing else to do some quiet nights but talk and, over time, fall in love. They were the subject of several precedent-setting test cases including inter-species marriage and the first human/AI couple to be allowed to adopt. Yes, Calcula quit her job; she's happier as the Professor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Smif College.

Alternately, Faye could give May a try-out that has her being trialled in as many bizarre and/or eccentric possible roles at Union Robotics as possible, including being telephone cold-calling (imagine May as a telemarketer; then imagine May as a telemarketer working from a script by Faye Whittaker).

This may come a bit out of left field, but I wanted to say: Good job!

(Not that I'd have the first idea about doing it, just liked the options)

P.S.: Why not: "Brun and Elliott have an agonising conversation about what to do if you feel attraction to someone ... when they are overheard by May who has just been told by Faye & Bubbles that after trying her out in several roles, that she is sadly, unemployable at UR - May decides to 'help' ... "?

P.P.S.: I'm seriously warming to the idea of May deciding that she's perfectly suited for a career as human relationships counsellor ...

May goes on a rant about how her favourite webcomic Judy Garden wrapped up this week without offering any explanation about the meaning behind the Giant Luminous Buttcheeks that emitted a gas causing the Hero to lose her memory, only to finally regain it just in time to save the day after the Sidekick produced a Magical Detox Potion.

Renee would be a maid of honor, not a matron.

But yes I think the arrival of Padma and a possible bachelorette party would be super fun.

May has learned several important things today:
  • Don't insult a prospective employer; despite what they tell you in sitcoms, it isn't considered being 'passionate' about the prospective job, it's just rude;
  • If you're out to insult someone, use an insult that they understand. 'Taint' is likely AI specific and probably doesn't mean much to humans!
  • Surprisingly, sex is not always the first thing on humans' minds and, in any case, walking side by side is not a shipping hint.
Those last two panels though? The most I can say is that the evidence about the soccer team and models is still somewhat equivocal, so Momo shouldn't be so quick to dismiss it just as May shouldn't read too much into it. Pouring something on someone else, even if it's champaign, can be a malicious act!

I'm still not sure about Faye's expression in panel 1. She doesn't look annoyed; more confused as if she really doesn't fully understand the conversation she just had.

I have serious doubts you want to know this, but it does mean something to some people (as one of the older geezers with English only as third language, I do need that dictionary on a regular base in today's world).

Do you not automatically check Urban Dictionary when you haven't come across something like that?  It can be quite "educational" - though in this case I already knew it.

As a matter of interest, the oldest use of "taint" I have found is from a midwifery book published in 1975:
Quote
"taint" for perineum -- because "'taint what's above and 'taint what's below"

It's well established by now that Faye really enjoys a good sassing. So her expression is not hard to interpret. She's looks pleased.

I can't help but feel the higher Jeph builds peoples' expectations with this storyline, the further they'll fall when he pulls the rug out from under them.

So, the great (great!) Billy Wilder had a piece of writing advice;
Quote
The more subtle and elegant you are in hiding your plot points, the better you are as a writer.

I think Jeph's doing an admirable job of that at the moment. Important to note; Shipping is happening fairly strongly in-universe right now.
So this can

1) Bubbles doesn't have feelings for the Pugnacious Peach, but ends up feeling pressured into it, Problems Occur, moral lesson Shipping is Wrong
2) Bubbles has feelings for Faye, is encouraged into admitting them and
2a) Faye reciprocates, which is... a path that is quite fraught.
2b) Faye doesn't, which is Problematic
3) Bubbles doesn't have feelings for Faye, realizes she doesn't have feelings for Faye, and this is all just a moral lesson Shipping is Stupid.

And of course I could be missing some. But I don't think 'pulling the rug out from under people' is the most likely choice. It's simply one more potential item on the menu, and I'd argue 3 is the least likely, just because it's the least interesting.

Why not Faye and Bubbles though?   IIRC the word was that human/robot love/marriage wasn't too typical, because some of them are toasters and music players and such.    Or like May has no equipment.  And although not all biological pairings can produce children, there's no potential for actual children with robots either...    Or who knows what tech they have in the QCverse.  There's the entire biological and AI/Mechanical thing people might freak out about (sometimes) or potentially there's software there making such ideas not too possible on the robot side of things.  Regardless of what Pintsize says about how Marten was able to buy him.     Yet mixed robot+human, if it isn't typical, then it isn't unheard of either.      It doesn't seem like that mostly with Bubbles and Faye, they're just friends, roommates,  and business partners.  More like they're mentoring each other it sometimes seems.   Yet still, maybe like Marigold and Dale hitting it off, or how Dora seems better attuned to Tai than she was to Marten, and like Marten just wasn't finding his groove with cissexual females and ended up falling for Claire,  perhaps Faye hasn't had much luck with biological males and might fall for Bubbles.  Doesn't seem likely?  Maybe, maybe not.   Who's to say what could happen.  Seems just as valid a pairing and subject to delve into as anything else is.    Or at least the story could make us think it's going that way, then <something happens> and hilarity (or heartbreak) ensues.

(Personally, I'd probably feel the inclination to murder her with extreme prejudice about 15 seconds after meeting her in person - still one of my favourite QC characters)
Oh, I like  her a lot, in large part because she's a bad example. I'm a bad example, too.

I can't help but feel the higher Jeph builds peoples' expectations with this storyline, the further they'll fall when he pulls the rug out from under them.

So, the great (great!) Billy Wilder had a piece of writing advice;

Has anybody else here read the webcomic "I Was Kidnapped By Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space!!!" by Rosalarian? I'm wondering whether Jeph is going to go down a similar route to Rosalarian with the fan-preferred pairing in her comic (Alice/Betty); when the comic ended she deliberately didn't have them get together as she wanted to subvert the standard "story ends with characters neatly getting into new relationship", and had in fact been planning things this way all along. A lot of fans were upset at this decision as they'd spent months shipping these two characters and felt disappointed that they didn't get a more conclusive ending, and at first I felt like that myself, but now in hindsight I admire Rosalarian for finishing the comic how she wanted to rather than trying to appease shippers. She wanted people to get attached to these characters and the idea of them being a couple so that the ending would give them something to think about - and, in some ways, come across as more realistic.

While circumstances in QC are notably different, as there are no known plans to end the comic in the near future, I'm curious as to whether Faye/Bubbles will be given a similar conclusion. I've personally always interpreted any romantic feelings as entirely one-sided on Bubbles's part (though that may be because I'm a fan of unrequited love plots.. relatable and all :P), but it'll be interesting to see which outcome ends up prevailing.

The hell? Even when I go to the actual picture link I get the third party hosting thing. Holy shit, I went to your photobucket, found it, and clicked on it, and I still got the third party hosting thing, when trying to look at it on photobucket.
