That guitar freak over in MAKE...
« on: 28 Aug 2017, 09:24 »

Now that I've dropped a DECENT picture of my planned Bubbles guitar paintjob into another thread, maybe I should take a moment to introduce myself.  Asexual, aromantic, biologically male but raised by a pack of wild lesbians, physically forty-two, emotionally half that at best, reasonably high-functioning autistic, living on SSI after trying for twenty-odd years to fit into normal society and just not getting it.  That summary leaves out a number of specific quirks that would make even Hanners think I'm a bit weird; I won't attempt to list those quirks, as they're just part of me, so I never think about them until they pop up, but if a comment of mine seems to come completely out of left field, don't say I didn't warn you.

I usually need some sort of creative outlet in my life.  Toward the turn of the century, I drew furry porn.  Later, I wrote novels.  These days, I'm teaching myself rhythm metal guitar with Troy Stetina's book on the subject, with a bit of hobby work on the instruments on the side.  My 'main' guitar is an Epiphone Custom Shop reissue of a dumbed-down Gibson '66 SG in silverburst, with a lot of little upgrades and some screaming Entwistle Dark Star neodymium humbuckers.  I'm giving away all of the guitars that counted as my practice pieces (four instruments, going to a low-income music school in Vancouver, WA after they're picked up this coming Thursday), but in addition to my SG the other 'keepers' on my tri-stand are an LTD M-17 seven-string (that I plan to give its own set of Dark Stars now that I know seven-string versions exist, comparing favorably to Seymour Duncan Pegasus pups), and Little Screamer, an Epiphone Jr. I modded with an insanely hot quad-rail and variable coil-tap.  So while it didn't actually start until last October when I stepped into a pawn shop on a whim and bought a Squier strat with a painfully-high action (seriously, that thing was exercise equipment, not an instrument) with the intent of being more serious about learning guitar this time, these days you could call me something of a gearhead.

You have come to the right place. Welcome to the forum. Please enjoy this ricotta and balsamic tart with heirloom tomatoes, and remember to guard your lug wrench with your life.

Heh, 'heirloom tomatoes' is just one of those phrases to sit and think about.  Entertainment return depends on personal twistedness.

Anyway, I've been following QC for years on my usual pattern for long-running comics, waiting at least three months then rereading from page one.  Got my mother hooked, and my nephew's gradually warming to my online entertainment suggestions along these lines so he'll be binge-reading the archives here soon enough.  It was my plethora of ideas for QC AI-themed guitar builds/mods that finally got me to delurk.  Sure, the robots aren't the whole series, and their only direct link to guitars consists of a few crass remarks and actions from Pintsize, but the humans are harder to characterize in an instrument.  Closest thing I've had to an idea along those lines is that I could build something that LOOKS like Natasha's flying V, but it probably wouldn't play anything like a US Jackson.

I can see a lot of people wanting to borrow it in the future.

Plus Gandalf quite likes heirloom tomatoes.
