I wonder if Friday's page was a close to a mini-arc or if May and Dale will have a heart to heart?
Either way it looks like Winslow will be spending a lot more time as a counselor. He might even persue a degree for the matter.

I think Emily and Brun could both get along with him, for completely different reasons.

Hmm... You know, we've never seen Officer Roko in a patrol car, have we? Or even an unmarked car? She's always been on foot, as if she were a beat cop. Which is odd, considering that she's with the state police, not the Northhampton P.D. -- not the sort of cop you expect to see walking a beat.

She clearly works plainclothes, although we do see her in uniform from time to time.  QC-verse MSP may have a unit that specializes in AI issues and seconds AI troopers to local agencies.

All I can say to Winslow today is this: Baby steps. May is going to need time until she feels safe to express her emotions fully around anyone, especially those who have a semi-official relationship with her such as 'volunteer apprentice counsellor'.

All I have to say to May is this: May has it occurred to you that it is Winslow who might need the hug?

Onto the matter of this week's strips. Jeph could drop this current thread here if he wanted to. Alternately, there is no reason why he couldn't just spend the rest of the week with Winslow and May talking about their respective back-stories and their feelings about their lives. Alternately, Jeph might want to write a smooth transition with them going to CoD just in time to run into other characters about to start the next arc.

Guys, guys, I figured it out. The tea "hallucinations" is a joint research project, involving the Emotional Alcohol project, the AI project, and probably the Spookybots!
http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2136

Instead of evoking emotion or flavor, they're evoking all five senses, AKA hallucination. And instead of being limited by the few compounds they can put into alcohol, they're going with the entire range of tea aromas, as experienced by AIs. So far, they've all been pleasant, or erotic in nature. But that's just Phase 1. The Spookybots are introducing a new opioid to a troublesome population...  :psyduck:

Are you suggesting this might be something that's being deliberately set up to possibly placate the AI population?

I think it's sweet that May seems so motivated to thank Momo for her friendship. Obviously that counselling session was a bit of a 'road to Damascus' moment for her!

That said, it's pretty clear that physical contact makes her a little uncomfortable. She shouldn't feel bound to do stuff like this if she doesn't want to (even though I think Momo would love every moment of it).

The line that boggles me is "Toaster's on fire again!" I mean... again?!? Who continues to use a toaster after it catches on fire once?

If my toaster ever caught on fire, I would extinguish the toaster, throw it in the trash, and buy a new one by a different manufacturer, more or less in that order. Complaining to the company that made the now-extinguished toaster would probably be in there somewhere, too...

Depends on the toaster. Shop I worked in we used to toast baps under an eye level gas grill, but still called it the toaster. You could certainly have left baps in there long enough to catch on fire without harming the grill.

At least Hannelore is covered in toaster soot.

Not a good day, but she's still come a long way.  If that happened a few years ago she'd still be in the shower when Winslow returned.

It looks like Coffee of Doom was having one of it's 'interesting' days, doesn't it. Hannelore's blank-out in panel 4 has nothing to do with her mental health issues, by the way. Anyone would react like that to memories like that! :-o

Anyway, the point is that I think that Winslow is going to find a use for all that hugging practice he's had today!

The line that boggles me is "Toaster's on fire again!" I mean... again?!? Who continues to use a toaster after it catches on fire once?

A lot depends on the cause of the fire. If it's actually the toast that's on fire then the fault is more likely to be with the toaster operator than the toaster themselves! Of course, given that my brain tells me that the person shouting from off-shot is Collette, there is no telling what she might have done accidentally on multiple occasions, each time babbling about her confusion about how this is even possible.

I'm pretty sure she's covered in espresso from the espresso machine spraying everywhere (they do have an ongoing joke about appeasing that thing so it behaves...).

Also, in that last panel, not only does Hanners have a blank expression, but she seems to have moved out of the kitchen. I think Winslow should stop her now before she trips over the couch in her stupor.

Dear Brits, Yanks, and others separated by a common language,

I believe the correct generic term is "spun sugar."  Cloying sweet, only very honest persons will admit to liking the stuff well into adulthood.

That is all.

Yours truly,
The Old Goat

Finding out regional names for foods is fun. I once discovered that what we call Rice Crispies here in the UK are known as Rice Bubbles in Australia, which I find very cute. :3

Regarding the poll, I think Droid 06 could be friends with Brun and Emily, but that Roko would probably be a bit spooked by him.

What really is fun is finding out that a name you grew up with and never really gave a second thought actually is quite cute. :)

It would also depend on the toaster. If the shell is all stainless steel, and it was just the bread burning, it just needs polished up. If the shell is mostly shoddy metal of indeterminate nature, or worse plastic, then yeah, into the trash. Especially since it probably only cost ten bucks in that case.

Bubbles isn't upset because she needs to eat, obviously. She's upset because her tea falls under the food budget.

Okay, so now we know where the strip is going next: Faye's fears and insecurities about the future of Union Robotics. She's the sort of person who basically lets their health suffer to keep her start-up afloat. Bubbles, understandably, isn't amused. In fact, for all she's going to be angry over the next few strips, it's anger motivated by fear for Faye and her health.

Jeph plays it for laughs, being the kind of guy he is. However, there's no way to disguise that there is something a little disturbing about Faye's slightly crazy expression. She's told herself that she can do this and that she needs to do this. That's never a good place for someone like her to be in!

So, we're going to have a Bubbles intervention; anyone care to speculate where that may go?

P.S.: Disembodied robo-heads have near-death experiences?
