Bubbles knows about logistics for squishies and how important it is to feed them. "Marches on its stomach" may even have been part of her training. It makes sense that her thoughts went straight there.

I get an almost Cleese feel from what Faye is saying and how she is delivering it.

Faye: And now on a more serious note. "fart"

Bubbles: [dead silence and a weird look ]

Faye: I will have to put aside some time for an "ART" project or three. Are you okay to help with the engineering and the brainstorming?

Considering the conversion rate from British pounds to Canadian dollars (which is where Shane lives), it's the exact same price.  Me (also in Canada), I usually buy boxes of Mr Noodle packages, $5 for a box of 24.

Also, is it just my dirty mind at work, or is Bubbles rocking some serious cameltoe today?

She was, then she received Bubbles' telepathic message -  or maybe just a "I am capable of dismembering you" expression.  Either way, the sweat drops spraying off to her left remove all doubt.

Faye's expression is priceless, too.  Jeph knocked it out of the park with the facial art today.

It looks like Marten isn't the only one who knows how to LOOM. Of course, with Bubbles it comes naturally! We also find that she has little tolerance for punsters, especially awkward ones.

Poor Faye though! I think that she was expecting Dora to be a counterpoint to Bubbles in some way. Her face in panel 4 tells a long, detailed story!

You know, waaay back when Bubbles was first introduced, I wondered if she would ultimately become Faye's AI 'keeper'. It looks like I was right (although I was wrong in assuming that it would be some kind of formal arrangement between them). There is so much simple power in that one phrase: "You need to take care of yourself." That is friendship and love in its most fundamental form: Even willing to offend or push if the recipient really needs it.

Claire isn't awkward. She is also unintentionally funny in her delivery and that makes up for a lot.

Disembodied robo-heads have near-death experiences?

Pintsize never let on about that!

When I saw that strip, I flashed on how Frosty the Snowman comes back to life every time that top hat is placed on his head...

Pretty sure Dora was going to say "instant noodles" or "ramen".

Given that the title of the strip is "Ramen And String Cheese", I figure that's what Dora was about to say...

*In season* non exotic vegetables are a helpful way to eat cheaply. But perhaps best of all is an evening job at a restaurant or takeaway, since you can guarantee one decent meal a day plus some more income. Not sure |I can see Faye in the Pizza girl outfit though. Now I've suggested it, maybe one of you fan art types would like to draw Bubbles as Pizza girl?

Local fruits and vegetables may be a good way to each cheaply, but Ramen and string cheese is cheaper still. As Faye may well discover if she actually tries Dora's purported "budget diet" and discovers the blatant lie she told (though I suspect Faye's already suspicious, if her expression in the last panel is any indication).

You're joking, surely, processed food is never a cheap way to live. Over here a 1.5kg packet of flour and a 100g packet of ramen cost about the same, but the flour can be made into a damper or something and give you twenty times the amount of food value...

Two things:
1) Is it just me, or has Faye appeared thinner in the last few strips?  Not sure if it's intentional per the storyline or just a slight shift in art style.

2) Eating cheap is fairly easy, it just takes willpower.
- Bulk dried goods (beans, rice, and noodles) will make up the majority of your diet; there's a reason they're a staple for most of the world.  Don't buy a 1lb sack of rice, buy a 10lb sack of rice - bulk savings are real.  Learn to cook them, learn to use spices.
- Store brand EVERYTHING.
- Family sized canned vegetables are *cheap*, and really aren't that much different from fresh in terms of nutritional value (spices will cover up that metallic taste)
- Buy uncooked whole chickens.  Pound for pound they're the cheapest meat you can buy, and can be prepared to provide meat, hearty stocks, and fat.
- A multivitamin (again, store brand, because you're generally paying extra just for a name when you buy name brand) fills in the gaps.
- Basically just buy the least processed form of food you can in the largest quantity available and learn to cook.

Good advise, but the last piece can be very difficult for an entrepreneur trying to get a small business off the ground.  That image of a couch, cot, or recliner chair in the shop isn't innaccurate, and Union Robotics is very much at that point in its development where "grabbing a slider" (a greasy hamburger that kind of slithers down your throat, for those non-USAians not familiar with the term) passes for nutrition.

I think you are correct - Jeph is drawing Faye thinner.  Props for being the first to publicly call where this arc is bending.

When Faye was working for Dora she also didn't have to worry about the expenses involved in running a business either, especially one like Union Robotics. Rent and utilities for the work space, insurance and raw materials for the shop are not going to be cheap and that's the bare minimum they need to be able to operate. If they need to replace any tools or equipment, if they pay for additional advertising. And while we've seen a steady flow of customers it's not been a flood either. If they got as many as one customer a day it would be surprising. And that's on top of having to pay rent on the apartment and all their previous expenses.

One thing about living on cheap food is a question of time. Why a lot of people go for cheap take out or heavily processed foods is they can be made and consumed quickly, which is important if you work 2-3 jobs plus have to take care of children. Buying bulk raw materials may be cheaper than packs of ramen, but not by all that much and it takes a lot longer to boil a chicken, render it into stock and pick the meat off then boil noodles than it is to make ramen. I've been in both situations of poorness in my life. Times where my diet mostly consisted of ramen and hot dogs and times when rice, beans  and lentils were my best friends... You have to do what you need to do sometimes.

I think it's originally a 1970s Californian expression, which would fit with A Scanner Darkly -- pub. 1977 by Philip K. dick who lived in California. The only other place I have come across it is in a book called The Serial by Cyra McFadden (1977) satirizing the inhabitants of Marin county -- the characters use it a lot.

Yep, when you've worked a long 12-hour day (since business owners, especially new business owners, rarely work 8-hour days) and are bone-tired from that day, that last thing you want to do is spend more hours preparing a meal from scratch. Throw some ramen in a boiling pot of water, and 5 minutes or less later you've got a meal to sleep on. Not the best or most nutritious meal, but better than nothing at all. And if you pick up a burger, pizza or some Chinese takeout on the way home, then you don't have to cook at all.

Another thing about that time factor; if you've worked a 12-hour day, you've most likely got to be back at work in another 12 hours. You've already lost some of that time getting home from work, and need to get to sleep ASAP (you'll probably WANT to get to sleep ASAP!). Meal prep will cut into precious rest time, maybe take a BIG slice if you're making meals from scratch. Sure you can make meals that can last you for days, but you've still got to take the time to cook them up. Another reason processed foods and takeout start looking real good at the end of the day...

I don't disagree, I was commenting in favor of money up there.  At the end of the day, you face the same basic choice that every human being has to make at some point (and which Faye is up against now): which is more valuable to you, your money or your time?

For those who cooking is a pain, a slow cooker works wonders.  if one can keep chopping away at things for long enough to get them into some sort of chunks, fill the thing, add water and seasonings and then go about one's day.

This may sound... well, strange, but this is the first time I've ever seen the express "to flash on (something)" outside of the novel A Scanner Darkly ...

Interesting. If I ever read that novel, it was so long ago that I can't remember it. Philip K. Dick, yes?

I think it's originally a 1970s Californian expression, which would fit with A Scanner Darkly -- pub. 1977 by Philip K. dick who lived in California.

Yes. He draw heavily on 70s Californian drug culture in particular, of which he was a part. The book is semi-autobiographical. Brilliant but sombre reading.

Ah, that explains why I used it so unconsciously. I've lived in California for most of my life, starting in 1966 when I was 4 and a half years old. I don't think I ever read The Serial, but I remember when it came out. Some of it may have been serialized in the San Francisco Chronicle, unless I'm thinking of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City -- I know that was serialized in the Chron, but I think The Serial may have been too.

Dora's parents are in the same city as her, right? Pretty easy to mosey down to the 'rents and mooch food off them. They seem to be a close-knit family so I doubt they'd mind the company (so long as it didn't happen ALL THE TIME). Known a few people who did that.

Faye's family is way down south though so that's not really an option for her regardless lol

I'm totally wondering about what's going on with the hair on Dora

IIRC, they first met way back when Dora and Marten were in a relationship. I got the impression that Veronica doesn't like Faye very much; I think that she knows that she's a woman with a sack-full of issues and really thinks that they aren't things she wants in Marten's life.

My archive-fu is not great, but my recollection is that Veronica likes Faye just fine. Just not as a romantic match for Marten.

Wow, I actually found the comic I had in mind. A minor miracle.
