I can't believe that I didn't recognize Roko and needed today's comic to point it out!

To quote my sisters "it's amazing how different you can look with some styling of your hair!"

She wears her hair back while working or trying to be incognito, but on a date it looks like she got dolled up...she actually looks great, it's a shame she had to date the walking porn storage unit

:-o :-o Now that Winslow has a new body, I think Rokslow is going to be my new 'ship. Why didn't this occur to me earlier!

Has Winslow ever shown any sign of sexuality?

Shipping an asexual?

Sure, why not?  A lot of asexuals form romantic relationships, sometimes involving sex, sometimes not.  Depends on the people involved.

Today's the day when Faye remembers why she tries to avoid having conversations with Pintsize, I suspect. His life and his problems push her 'weird-o-meter' needle a bit too far over to the right. Seriously, though, I suspect becoming entangled in this matter may reassure her that, no matter how odd her relationship with Bubbles is becoming, she's still got mainstream problems compared to a certain robot copper.

Quote
For your information, Claire was MUCH more supportive than you!
-- Pintsize

I can't help but wonder why Pintsize was expecting anything different from Faye. I mean she pretty much is the living avatar of 'spiky and sassy', so 'supportive', especially of him isn't something that you'd expect! If anything, sticking up for and trying to protect Roko is more in character for her! :-P

Has Winslow ever shown any sign of sexuality?

FWIW, I consider Winslow to be entering adolescence for a variety of reasons. The answer to the question of his alignment is 'wait and see'.

P.S.
Pintsize was very upset that he didn't impress Roko before and he seems to be very keen to have a second chance now. Either he intends to get the coveted 'worst date ever' spot or he really does like Roko and we might be seeing him about to attempt a real relationship for the very first time (the mind boggles at that, by the way)!

The problem with Roko+Winslow is that Winslow is out of town for an indeterminate period.

Roko’s romantic prospects in Northampton aren’t great at the moment, at least among the known cast. She seems to be interested in male robots, and the list of presumably single male robots other than Pintsize includes:

Punchbot
PT410x
Punkbot
Gordon
May’s parole officer
Droid 06

I’m probably missing a few, but still: do you see Roko working with any of those guys?

I've got to say that I think Punchbot is a very sweet guy, IMO, and I suspect that any Roko/Punchbot ship would probably be ultra-cute and ultra-sweet. As a CPA, Barty Punchbot is also sufficiently 'respectable' enough for an ambitious officer to take with her to formal functions and the like. The fact that he's an underground fist-fighter with sadomasochistic tendencies might actually be a bonus for her.

That said, my feeling about the direction of the arc, at least at the moment, isn't really about shipping Roko at all. I think it's going to be at least in part about Pintsize being genuinely attracted to Roko on a certain level and trying to clean up his act to impress her on a second date. Whether or not that goes well or comedically badly is entirely up to Jeph. I have to say that the character of Pintsize is the sort that lends itself to a "I didn't learn any lessons at all!" outcome with the relationship crashing and burning because he ultimately has more fun being who he is now than he ever could being a 'respectable' boyfriend.

You know, having "Pintsize" and "respectable" in the same sentence really feels odd. It's not just that it needs a negation, it's more like an equator and poles not touching kind of thing.

Yet if you shift the magnetic poles ninety degrees from the axial poles you would have the equators touching the poles - the results are .... interesting ...

  • The area immediately below the poles would be rendered uninhabitable by the high-energy particles being funnelled down the geomagnetic field towards the planet's core;
  • The magnetosphere would now be rotating at a significant angle to the solar magnetic field. This would create a dynamo effect, charging the atmosphere, creating global and unceasing thunderstorms (greatly increasing surface temperatures far beyond the tolerance of most macroscopic life);
  • The charging of the ionosphere would make radio communication impossible and possibly fry any spacecraft in orbit almost as far out as the Moon.
Basically, it would turn Earth into a near-duplicate of Venus

Jeph has already established that people even in the QC universe sometimes distrust cops to a very disruptive level. I can see Roko not mentioning her profession for fear of frightening off potential dates. It's silly and it's certain to backfire on her but it's an anxiety that I understand.

Let's not forget Hannelore's reaction, when Roko first came to Coffee of Doom, and she learned who she was.

I always assumed that was because of who she was specifically as opposed to her career choice in general. Hannelore assumed that Roko was there looking for info on Faye and Bubbles, and took a dim view of being asked to snitch.

(The only other cop/Hanners interaction I can recall was many years ago, when Hanners hit her head and ran down the street covered in blood and screaming. The cop there had... reasonable concerns.)

(Also a feature of those days were the Ridiculously Laid Back Cops of Boston Town- getting high in the cruiser, beer sledding. Innocent times...)

Doesn't make the more general point that Roko might be worried about revealing her profession on the first date invalid though.

Considering as Earth's magnetic field is caused by the dynamo effect of the conductive core spinning with the planet's rotation in the charged field of solar particles, it's a little difficult to imagine the magnetic poles moving very far from the axial poles.

If it did, I suppose it would imply that the molten core of the planet would be rotating with its axis more-or-less in the plane of Earth's orbit, while the surface of the planet was rotating with its axis more-or-less perpendicular to Earth's orbit.

Which puts the relative velocity of the mantle and crust at about 1600 kph.  Well, between about 1600 kph and 2000 kph at every point of their contact, in an interesting variety of directions that would depend on where you were in the world and what time of day it was.

I'm no geophysicist, but even before taking the effects of the magnetic field itself into account, I'm pretty sure that would be Bad.  Continental drift isn't something we normally think of as dangerous, but let's not take it to extremes.

If you want to see what it might look like, take a look at Uranus and Neptune.  Both of them not only have widely offset angles (59 degrees for Uranus, 47 for Neptune), they don't even meet in the center of the planet - Uranus's poles meet about a third of the way from the center to the edge, and Neptune's over half.

Very concise outlines of geological and planetary dynamics in general.

Unfortunately I did not explain what my statement was based upon and as most humans are terra centric, all thoughts went to earth and neighboring planetary bodies.

When you use the power of google-fu you will discover at some point some very extraordinary celestial bodies.

Has Winslow ever shown any sign of sexuality?

he has browsed lesbian porn in the past, though he may not have been aware of what it was.

EDIT: He also attended a robot bachelor party and complained he couldn't receive a lap dance, as at the time he lacked a lap.

Quote

Asexual isn't necessarily Aromantic.

Though that said, after remembering the bachelor party, I think it's probably worth mentioning that a Robot isn't necessarily going to express the same sexual cues as a human even if they have sexual urges.

Some people go to interests/hobbies first.  I also get the idea that she tried to start conversation, and Pintsize just kept launching toast at her, likely not paying attention to what she actually said.

Edit:  Looked back at the comic.  Literally the first pannel she asks "So, ah, what do you do for work?"  To which if Pintsize was doing more then launching toast, he would answer and ask "And what do you do?" or something like that.  So I would say she did not avoid saying what she does at all.  Pintsize was just a really bad date.

I'm getting more and more certain that Jeph is planning some kind of weird comedic romance centred around Roko, Pintsize and the fact that she has kinks that Pintsize is willing to realise but that she actually finds less enthralling in reality than in her fantasies. That said, I'm pretty sure that Claire and Faye are going to get it into their heads to 'help' one or both of the protagonists in this little drama. That could lead to quite unpredictable consequences.

Meanwhile... I am really getting to love these strips when Claire and Faye interact. You see, Faye is just totally open with her the way she is with Marten. I think that this shows how the apartment has definitely become 'home' for Claire and she is probably one of the people Faye thinks about when she asks herself 'who is at home?'

Was Claire actually trying to get a rise out of Faye,  or just wanting to leven the situation with a little humor?

It's not at all surprising that Roko didn't immediately disclose her occupation to Pintsize.  Real life cops will size a new acquaintance up before revealing what they do, as do many other professions.  A friend of mine loathes being introduced as a veterinarian because the conversation immediately turns into a string of pet medical questions or the third degree from some militant vegan.  Most lawyers prefer to lay low until they're fairly confident the person they're speaking with isn't going to claim any attorney-client privileges.  And pity the single physician.

Jeph used to draw all females with lips and males without; then at some point he started dropping the lips character by character.  I guess this is another step in his aim of cleansing the world of lips.

I'm amused that Pintsize was HONEST about the toast fetish. *lol*

Odd thought and a prediction: The final comic of the week will be Roko coming into the repair shop with serious burns on two fingers.

When Faye asks how it happened, she just blushes and shouts about it being none of her business.

Where have Fayes lips gone? Jeph has drawn her lipless from time to time, but never before so consequently than the last two strips. Change of style? Plastic surgery?

My guess is there really isn't much time for lipstick (or other makeup) when you are busting tail putting together robots. Given the way her arms have bulked up, she's probably sweating up a storm on some busier days during work. I find makeup is rather pointless in those situations as it smears/drips off (with sweat)—plus clogged pores are no fun.

Is anyone ever going to explain to Pintsize that someone meeting you in a restaurant to decide if they want to have kinky sex is not consent to kinky sex then and there in the restaurant? This is important life information.

The title of the strip was "Beucephalus rides again", but I had no idea who "Beucephalus" was. Bucephalus (no e after the b) was the name of Alexander the Great's horse, but I didn't think that was the intended reference. A little googling (after insisting that yes, I really mean Beucephalus) revealed that "Beucephalus is a nightmare steed of Strahd von Zarovich, who resides in the crypts of Castle Ravenloft", which seems much more like what Pintsize would be trying to suggest.

I get the feeling that we'd get blood from a stone a lot sooner than Pintsize understanding that concept.

In the vein of this week's poll, I made an account just for this...

Can Winslow get a first date with robot copper Roko?

Welcome, new person!

You got several things right, like having the characters you're imagining getting together be orientation-compatible. Also you're talking about a first date, not trying to push them straight into the sack. Plus they may be personality-compatible.

(mod)Therefore I think you're clear of the shipping rule(/) but it's still important that we haven't seen a hint of them getting Interested.

Come to think of it they could connect over their jobs, or at least they could have while Winslow was facilitating the support group. Police work has interesting connections to counseling. I've read more than one hostage negotiator say something to the effect "A lot of them just want someone to listen to them".

I am intrigued and amused to see another trait that AIs (or this one, at least) have in common with organics:
Under stress, their "native" accent becomes stronger.
