Okay, as we seem to definitely be doing a longer-than-usual arc at The Secret Bakery, I thought that an appropriate poll was called for. Which of the store's products do you want to buy. All of the choices have appeared in the strip, although some are rather obscure.

I'd buy the bagels but not just because I've just discovered them and love them. Because Brun doesn't like them, I am less likely to have to handle her strangely calm annoyance that she directs towards anyone who obtains bread products that she wants for herself!

As I've already said, I'm expecting a continuation of the funny, occasionally sad and always ultra-awkward Clinton-Elliot-Brun interaction for this week. I'm not expecting it to actually go anywhere, only to some equivalent of Faye's 'nah, couldn't be' from all three of them.

I'm hoping Marten actually gets some screen time.

Or Coffee of Doom.

Or how Hanners is doing...

mmmmm...croissants. I used to eat those every day.

Though I gotta say a mix is tempting. There's something appealing about getting several of you don't know what and finding out if you like it or it's a mistake.

An Elliot hug seems like it would be very comforting. Large human hugs are best hugs.

So, something tells me that the most common phrase Clinton is going to be uttering around Elliot is: "Calm down Elliot and don't hold on so tight!"

Meanwhile, I think that Brun is going to be remembering today as one of the stranger ones for various reasons. She's had new experiences, some positive and some negative. I'm pretty sure that she hasn't classified being hugged by Elliot yet; it isn't as 'uncanny valley' as the cow mascot but it was still unexpectedly overwhelming.

So between the literal dark cloud over Clinton and Brun on Friday, and the shining light of an Elliot-hug in the first panel today, I see Jeph's using more "illustrative atmospherics" in the comic.

Not sure how I feel about that yet - when it's obvious, there'a a point.  How else is Elliot going to "tune in" to what was going on while he was in the kitchen?  It tells us he's actually a keen observer of people, not unusual for a successful bouncer.

But when it's not so obvious, it seems a bit manipulative.  I always felt the story itself was enough to carry the emotion.

Also, the Padma special.  I'm at a point in life where I'm starting to savor my regrets.

Poor Brun! I think, whether or not she's really tired, I think that she's reached her emotional immersion maximum saturation point. Simply put, she can't confront more social interaction with such a strong emotional content (hers and others), so she's withdrawing to recharge.

Meanwhile, in panel 3, both Clinton and Elliot are thinking the same thing: "She's so cute and pretty! It's such a shame that she's not interested in me like that!"

FWIW, I'm with Renee, though: The blender-thing in the back being on fire again is probably something that should be a higher priority for Elliot than hanging out with his crushes!

I was just wondering what Brun's and Clinton's kids would look like.

Red hair is a recessive trait, so any children of hers fathered by Clinton would be more likely to have dark hair like Brun's but, if she has Germanic ancestry as her name suggests, they may have blue eyes.

I actually knew someone who had dark skin (darker than Brun, even) and bright red hair. She was quite attractive, and the color contrast was striking. And yes, the red hair was natural.

Nah, she’s young enough that she dated Angus without him commenting on her age. I think they’re foster sisters or were in the same group home.

An age gap doesn't preclude a romantic relationship.  But, you are right that those are two other viable possibilities.  She could have also been a caregiver for Brun's mother when she was dying from cancer.  And I've seen a relationship with a 22 year age difference develop from not too different circumstances, so it's not impossible she became involved with Brunsire through that route.

I'm speculating on possibilities but there's nothing presented in-strip up to this point that makes one any more likely than another.

We know nothing at all about how Brun and Renee met. There are lots of possibilities that can fit the data (since there isn’t any), but the simplest explanation is that they are simply friends who met somewhere along the way.

If Bubbles took offense at being compared to a Ferrari I'd understand her point of view.

Who's the best person in the cast to advise her about picking flattering clothes? Momo? Hannelore?

With her ginger hair, she should have gone for the green one in frame 1.  Ordinarily taht would risk upstanding the bride, but in that case there were two grooms.

I think this might actually be my favourite strip in the comic now.

What are the contenders, people?

EDIT:
Drunk sledding, Hanners and the red hot paperclip, the reveal of the monks fought off with the battle spatula were real, and SCORN might be my contenders.

Really, this is going to be a challenge for them. Bubbles has, of course, never had any reason to want to learn how to dress 'hot, human style' ever before. From what I've seen, Faye's never been in the right place, emotionally or with her self image, to want to. So, the two of them are definitely in for a bit of an exploration of their presentation and personal aesthetics over the next few strips.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking that, in panel 4, Faye probably is having issues focussing on the matter at hand. I think that she's definitely thinking of Bubbles in lingerie, Bubbles in risque business casual and Bubbles in revealing swimwear. Basically, everything except the practicalities of what is ahead :-D

Oh, and Bubbles liking butch!Faye confirmed.

Who's the best person in the cast to advise her about picking flattering clothes? Momo? Hannelore?

Momo and Hannelore are both much slimmer and their ideas of what is attractive might not translate well over to Bubbles' much heavier body type. I'm thinking  that Bubbles has asked the right person, assuming that Faye can get past her current inner fashion parade fantasy.

Slinky black dress. Or perhaps a slinky dress in the same shade of maroon that she normally wears - that’s a good color on her.

Perhaps this needs to turn into a collective effort. Faye, Claire and Dora team up to advise Bubbles on fashion. And if Veronica got involved too, the results could be... interesting.

For me, the bodysuit Bubbles wears isn't working. It would be great if she could take it off. It would be amazing to see Bubs in a dress, I don't think we have yet. Yes, a black dress. Bubbles all dolled up, how lovely.

I personally like Bubbles with her hair down. It looks good. Everyone commented how beautiful she looks with it down.

Definitely not overalls...but Bubbles' casual/athletic style is working for her. I would say deep six the bodysuit and she's good to go.

I'm going to disagree--clothes that match her hair/skin are a no go for me (hence why I want the bodysuit gone). Clothes that complement it--yes!

This might be far afield of regular comic discussion but this strip does bring to mind the following; when your lady-bot (or whatever) comes to you and says something like "I desire to/am willing to alter my appearance to suit your preferences" what is an appropriate and healthy response?

This might be far afield of regular comic discussion but this strip does bring to mind the following; when your lady-bot (or whatever) comes to you and says something like "I desire to/am willing to alter my appearance to suit your preferences" what is an appropriate and healthy response?

I think Faye had one appropriate response.

This might be a good RELATE thread!

I think there's more than one answer depending on who makes the offer. If it's somebody like Marigold, the first order of business is to build up their self esteem. The other end of the scale would be somebody like Veronica. If she offers her lover the chance to ask for appearance changes, then his appropriate response is gracious acceptance.

Women in overalls are hot as shit. It's science fact.

Well, yeah, that amount of denim next to the skin can really get things sweaty. And those rivets up top can leave burn marks on the skin, too, if left out in the sun too long.

Ah, hot rivets. Those will leave a mark.

Fun fact: Levi’s jeans originally had a crotch rivet. However, a few too many cowboys got, ahem, branded by hot rivets while sitting around campfires, so Levi Strauss was persuaded to remove that feature.

Faye’s response was the correct one.

Overalls aren’t butch...

Faye isn’t really butch. I don’t know why people keep saying she is. I had short hair for awhile but I still wasn’t butch.

Overalls and dungarees are less butch at the moment partially because they're trendy, as they were in the 90s. In the preceding and intervening years, they were definitely a hallmark of a tomboyish girl.

Faye has many more of those hallmarks too. She doesn't present as particularly traditionally feminine at all, is in quite a masculine line of work, has a very harsh sense of humour and tone which is, lest we forget, generally seen as powerful in men but off-putting in women...

For the record: No shade is being thrown here, I have two partners and I would say that masculinity-wise Faye sits somewhere between the two of them. Gender is, of course, a construct; I'm talking about my own, admittedly anecdotal, observations about the public's viewpoints and interpretations at large.
