Well, we do have the in-universe solemnly sworn word of one lady who likes ladies (and the agreement of another) that Faye "got wicked buff and has a super-butch haircut and it is hot as shit".

https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3154

So it's safe to say Faye has earned some "butch" cred.

Their expert evaluation of Bubbles cracks me up:
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3484

But yeah, if you like ladies, then an attractive lady in overalls is very damn appealing. Hopefully she's washing them once in a while.

@ reallynotboxbot it's a relationship metaphor, not a robot metaphor.

Faye has been offered the chance to drive fancy car//dress up a pretty lady, but is apprehensive because she does not confidence in her driving skills//fashion. Double anxiousness because if you know anything about high end manual transmissions and/or body image insecurities, you know that pushing it too hard or too fast can cause lasting damage to the engine///heart.

That's one fun thing about dating another woman--going clothes shopping together.

I'm not feeling any of these looks on Bubbles.

Okay, Bubbles is adorable in a bunch of outfits.  Beautiful work to see.

But there's no way a woman her size could find that many outfits at one thrift store.  She's about six standard deviations off the norm, and a typical thrift store only has about two thousand outfits at any given time.  I have learned to ignore the clothing in thrifts; the odds of finding anything AT ALL in my size are too poor to make it worthwhile.

So I have to interpret this as the pair of them going around and hitting something on the order of fifty thrift stores, and we only got the few scenes where they found something and Bubbles tried it on.

Bubbles in the yellow dress is adorable!

I'm somewhat biased towards that kind of dress, especially on tall women. But that's just me I guess.

My favourite thing I used to say cheekily was that in short.shorts a 6" frame was legally naked.

I said this about my self btw. I would blush way too much if I ever even thought that far about another.person.

There is something distinctly full of.awe.struck about a tall person in  short shorts.

I say person because of John Barrowman wore short shorts I and half the world would faint.

To me, all of Bubbles's outfit options have different upsides.
  • The one in panel 5 is obviously for clubbing or for when Bubbles wants to get and hold Faye's attention;
  • The one in panel 3 is for her first meeting with Faye's mother, to earn the 'She seems a nice, respectable girl' rating (maybe also to visit Faye's childhood church);
  • IMO, The one in panel 4 is best for everyday use; the fact that Bubbles obviously likes it makes that clear.
Speaking of the option in panel 5, I wonder how Bubbles really regards the way her body drives Faye wild? Flattered, embarrassed or a combination of both?

P.S.:
I suddenly realised yesterday that Bubbles in-service designation (using the Star Wars Stormtrooper template) could be 'BU-8135'. Look at it through 1337 filters and you'll see what I mean!

Same reason they would have skin, hair, a nose, etc.  It is a psychological aid for their interactions with humans.

Go, Bubbles! Keep looking and get some cute outfits. That said, she should try more red colors and veer away from yellow. She has a red tone to her skin. Generally, if you have pink or red tones in your complexion (versus olive), yellow can be difficult to work with (though there are always exceptions to the rule). She looks fab in white as women with dark skin often do.

I love thrift stores! That's where I buy 80% of my jeans. We have a really upscale one that sells mostly designer clothing I like to visit sometimes, but you can't bean $6 Goodwill jeans. :)

Loving the idea of Bubbles dressing up. Whatever outfits she goes for should continue to show off her amazing figure, and she should save the hair-down look for special occasions.

Question: Does she wear shoes? Does she need to?

I've been thinking what would suit Bubs. Since she usually wears here tight bodysuit, I'd go for something looser, but not overly baggy. A dress or a skirt combination might be nice, but it's not that good in that work of line.

What I'd kinda like to see is Bubs in full Victorian attire at the Horrible Revelation.

These last two pages are really cute. It's nice to see Bubbles in different clothing, I think she looks good in all the outfits.

I think a tank top and knee length shorts would be a good standard outfit for Bubbles, but it might be too close to how Faye used to dress.

I didn't realize until I saw this how much I NEEEEEEDED to see Bubbles in a cute dress.

I think the yellow actually works great on her skin color, but what do I know.

It is clear that Bubbles has not one shred of fashion sense. I mean, there are humans that claim the same, but she really, truly, never gave it any thought until removing her armor. There have been some absolutely gawdawful getups.

"Are shorts and a cardigan an acceptable combination?" To be honest, no. No they are not. Faye's answer was... nicely diplomatic.
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3477

Nope, not even with a tie:
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3480

Mom jeans with bodysuit. Not... bad?
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3501

Shorts with bodysuit. Bad.
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3592

"Robots in activewear" is a pretty good direction -- practical, bright synthetics work well with nonhuman pigmentation, shouldn't trap too much heat... wouldn't want any untoward venting.
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3566
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3548

Since Faye showed up and Bubbles started "growing" and styling her hair, it's always looked pretty good. And she did a nice job with May's hair.

As far as Bubbles' feet, I think she has some sort of dark red "tread" stuff that snaps on at the toe and heel when she's out and about. Most AIs seem to just wear shoes.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but why would an AI have a navel?

It's probably more of a navel-like dent without a lot of detail, and at the risk of drastically overthinking this, it's probably there because AI myomer muscles (at least in high-end chassis like Bubbles') seem to closely mimic human muscles. Bubbles has biceps, triceps, pecs, etc. so it would make sense that her abdomen follows the same muscle pattern as human abdomens, where the muscles sort of flow around the navel. It's also sort of a "landmark" and an AI with a navel would look a little more human-ish while wearing human clothes.

Similarly, AI feet don't need separated toes or a lot of details that would drag them into the uncanny valley, but they're close enough in general shape and function that most of them wear human shoes.

When you think about it, designing androids would be full of aesthetic and practical decisions and tradeoffs like this. You have to stay far enough away to avoid the uncanny valley, but at the same time you need to keep fairly close to a lot of human features we mostly never think about to enable good function and to give needed visual landmarks.

It varies, of course -- May's cheap-ass government chassis is a lot more abstract, and doesn't have a navel:
https://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3175

Then again, this is still a cartoon. The Benevolent Creator draws wonderfully expressive hands, but no one, human or AI, seems to have fingernails. It would probably take twice as long to draw each frame...

I don't think that she needs to, no. Those 'socks' probably have heavy-duty and high-traction treads as soles. I think that, like a lot of Synthetics, Bubbles likes to wear shoes to stick out less in a crowd.

Interesting, I actually interpreted these last strips about finding casual clothing for outside of work.

Based on the clothing that she's trying on they do not appear to be looking at work-related clothing.

I definitely don't think you were. It was an innuendo, but not the one I am implying. I was referring to the innuendo implied in someone else's reply to this.

No fans of https://xkcd.com/37/?  Does that last outfit that Bubbles tries on count as "regular ass-clothes"?  ;-)

Oh, come on. This forum is practically ground zero for butts disease. Of course other people thought of it.

That is all.  Carry on.  :)

A "buttload" is an actual measurement, next time someone tells you that they need a buttload of something, tell them 126 gallons might be a bit too much.
