God, I love Doras face in panel four. Has Jeph ever done $-eyes before? And that smirky smile remnds me of Bembo.

Aah, Bembo. We miss you.  :-D

Hmmm..... That's a toughy. I think it's a few mixed together.
Appreciation of Dora's cleverness/frugality with a bit of snark and something else, maybe?

Closed eyes while talking with a smirk can indicate smugness, so I'd say a kind of smug satisfaction.

Personally, I think that Emily is mixing Melon's left-overs into the big overnight Iced Tea barrel. No-one had told her not to and no-one has complained yet!

Meanwhile, it makes sense that Melon and Emily would connect on some level. I'm not sure that they have similar thinking processes but they have a similar fast-and-loose approach to reality that probably makes it easier for them to communicate with each other.

Finally, regarding Faye's facetious suggestion in panel 5... Just what is the chemical formula of the rubber rocket fuel that Virgin Galactic uses? Dora might be able to cut in on defence procurement here and that particular pot is bottomless!

I'm pretty sure it's a health code violation to serve drinks that have been previously served to other customers (even if they were not actually consumed or even touched).

Yep, at least in MA. Learned this a while ago when a side of white rice was given to us which we did not want. We told them to take it back since we didn't want it to be wasted, but they told us they would have to throw it out now anyway.

Not sure about Dora's ethics here either...

Law may be different regarding AIs handling food, since they don't seem to eat or drink the same things as humans (witness Roko getting drunk on software). Heck, it may even be a loophole.

I stopped going to one burger place when I returned a burger that had all the toppings I didn't order and none that I did. Counter person threw the burger away and put in a new order for me. Grill person asked for the old burger patty, was told it was in the trash, responded, "I could have used it to make chili!"

Also, iced tea (which I make and drink by the gallon at home) has got to be one of the biggest profit makers for restaurants, right up there with the various steakhouse fried-onion appetizers. Two bucks or more a glass for a nickel's worth of water and powder and (if you like it sweet) cornsyrup, even with free refills (US).

Dora pisses me off sometimes with her greed. She joked about cutting Brun’s leg off because Hanners gave Brun a clock that turned out to be worth money, now she’s violating health codes.

I feel like Dora is going to have a come to Jesus moment where she realizes she can’t keep being like this.

I’m right there with you. That crap made from powder is not iced tea. And corn syrup has no place anywhere near good sweet tea.

The best iced tea in the South (and therefore the world) is served at Elmo’s Diner in Durham, North Carolina, where it is properly brewed. Although I had a glass at a restaurant in Ocean Isle a couple of weeks ago that was competitive.

Eh, I think that gag is in "rule of funny" territory.

Everyone knows you can't re-serve anything that's crossed the counter, but hey, it was funny. No one actually gets dollar sign eyes either, but it's funny.

There's such a thing as over-analyzing, ya know...  :-D

As an aside, if something hasn't crossed the counter, it can often be re-used. Wendy's tosses timed-out burger patties into the fridge and uses them to make their chili. Perfectly safe and tasty.

Love the idea of the floral print dress but the idea I had that made me laugh was

Princess Leia cosplay.  CinnaBuns hair, long white dress & blaster ;) Of course Faye would rock as Han...

Faye as Han, OK. but maybe Bubbles as Chewbacca?

Too obvious.  Think different. Make Bubbles the General/Princess in charge rather than just another sidekick.

I don't sweeten tea. Sweetener is too often used to cover up the taste of bad tea.
The best iced tea I've ever had is Tejava. Nothing in there but tea. Not even a little citric acid, which seems to be a frequent additive to off-the-shelf "pure" iced tea.

Sweet Tea is an Abomination unto the Lord of the Leaf. If you have a proper black tea, brewed and served hot, that is the Way of Life. You may, if you wish, meddle and muddle your Tea with lemon, milk, honey or cane sugar,  but if you have a Quality Tea, properly brewed (see ISO Standard 3103), such contaminants are not necessary.

I drink lots of hot tea (black, green, white, and oolong) but I also make it by the pitcherful to drink cold. Either way, I use the same leaves (loose when I can, sachets when I must) and I take it uncontaminated.

Faye looking a little concerned about Dora's weird expression in the last panel?
Maybe she suspects Dora is holding something back?

I really, really want to know what prompted Dora's dad to say that to her. I'm sure that there is an interesting story (and possibly a half-sibling) out there! All that aside, I do think that this was specific advice from him to her relating to her attitude towards relationships and towards herself as it was at the time. She's skinny and pale enough that I suspect there was a bit of self-destructiveness in her behaviour back then that is implied in the older strips too.

What I really love about this strip is pre-Strip 500 witchy goth Dora rendered in the current art style. That's a treat for those of us who have read the early strips.

That said, yeah Faye knows her best lady friend well enough to know that she is changing the subject here.

DoraDad is kind of right. Mixing any kind of professional and personal can be tricky. Add in the pansexual nature of Faye and Bubble's relationship there are undoubtedly many hurdles to cross. Makes for a far more entertaining story than Claire and Marten's "I'm Trans", "Cool" arc. Though as JJ seems to be giving out "wins" to his characters before closing shop I'm sure it will all work out.

Everyone wondering where Dora's father got that advice, he's a professional photographer (if I remember correctly).

That's a profession where the old adage holds true, and please excuse the vulgarity, but you don't shit where you eat.

That's just asking for trouble.

I know couples who met in the workplace and continued their careers successfully together right through to retirement.

What I really love about this strip is pre-Strip 500 witchy goth Dora rendered in the current art style. That's a treat for those of us who have read the early strips.

And I came to make a very rare post/comment that for those of us who have been reading the strip since forever, that if that one panel was done in Jeph's throwback style it would have been friggin' awesome!  :)

And I've known couples that met in the workplace, had a relationship and had to be sent to different departments in different cities when they broke up.

I've worked in larger companies where they strictly forbid people having relationships with coworkers for that very reason.

Faye and Bubbles are two people in a startup. That's stressful enough as it is, but they don't even have the buffer of coworkers. Its going to be a tight line to walk.

Any of the arts professions can tend to be riddled with people with personality disorders. I've known quite a few characters when I did photography and graphic design—and they were usually coworkers (though don't start me on marketers). Some of the most talented folks were the most "colorful."

Technical professionals? Not so much. My coworkers seemed more mellow when I ended up in web. And from what I've seen Engineers have their own brand of crazy (I have a few in my family and married one), but it's a more subdued compared to the arts. Tech people tend more to be predictable than artists. Of course you run into jerks and weirdos (the bad kind) in any profession. Same goes with cool, amazing people, too.

Which reminds me terribly of Gaiman's "Death" of the Endless... ~;)

I haven't had the impression that JJ is anywhere near closing the shop when it comes to QC. Isn't QC by far his main source of income too?
Still plenty that can be explored in QC anyway, so I hope he'll continue for quite a few years to come.

I know couples who met in the workplace and continued their careers successfully together right through to retirement.

Couples in the workplace (e.g. coworkers) is one thing, but starting a business together and then getting together is a whole other animal.

That said, there are plenty of couples who end up starting businesses together after they've been together for years, so there is no articular reason it couldn't work out.
A lot will likely depend on how quickly they can get Union Robotics going, since a lot of stress related to a (possibly failing) business usually doesn't do much good to the relationship.

Of course, there is no reason it couldn't work out, and we all hope it will.

The two difficulties will be:
  • They will always be in each others' pockets, both living and working together, which can cause tensions to build without relief. I happen to believe that it's important for people in a relationship to have their own space that they can retreat to if they need it. Thankfully, Bubbles has the unicorn grove. Not sure about Faye.
  • The stakes of the relationship are raised. The complications will be that much greater if it happens not to work out.
Yes, stress from the business can cause strain to a relationship, but that would be the case even if they were involved in separate businesses.

Ah yes, but if both are employed at different places, the chances of work-related stress happening simultaneously to both are greatly reduced, which definitely makes a difference.
