Author Topic: I've been trying to put into words how to describe my inner voice for Bubbles  (Read 4599 times)

So I've been trying for awhile now to pin down how my inner voice for Bubbles can best be described, because of all the cast she has the most unique "voice" inside my head when I read the daily comics. I had a realization today that pretty much nails it: my inner voice for Bubbles is basically Orisa from Overwatch.

Hmm!

Not too far from mine but my own "mental picture" was more under-played.

Ehhhh?  :?

My own voice-over is a bit more mellow and huskier(?) without the metallic reverb.

Just thinking about it now but a squad mate with a metallic synth voice would be jarring in any stressful situation.
My own perception is that the voice would be closer to what is produced through the Vocaloid Software suite but using a Brunhilda template.

Now I imagine hearing Bubbles sing Die Walküre and putting those Scottish Pipers to shame.  :-D

A good pun is it's own reword.
There is a difference between spare parts, extra parts and left over parts.

The Venn diagram  for Common Sense and Good Sense has very little, if any, overlap.

  • I'm a bandicoot!

My mental voice for Bubbles essentially sounds like Gwendoline Christie with an American accent.

To me, something level enough that she could burn you and you wouldn't notice at first.

I generally "hear" a metallic timbre to the AI character's voices when I read, since they all use square dialogue boxes. Using oval boxes like the humans do would suggest they sound more human-like, to me anyway.

I guess the squadmates wold just have to get used to the "robot tmbre" by drilling and training together? Not sure. I agree on the opera thing though. :D

Funny, I've never heard them in a non-human voice.

Not even Pintsize, in the early days.

Heck, not even PT410X...

But some of them - the battle droids, for example - I do hear in that metallic, shouting tin-speaker tone.  They seem more like smart weapons to me, less like a person.  And that's the thing - even the little early models, they're not uncanny valley, but they act more like a person than machine.

Even Punchbot's manic laugh sounds human to me!

I'm gonnna go drink some more of the kool-ade, now.   :-D

For me, Bubbles' voice is a mix of Cate Blanchett and Christine M. Auten ( red hair, dark skin ).

Pretty good, though I hadn't imagined a Caribbean(?) accent. Since she's a product of the USA's military-industrial complex, I'd imagined a "neutral" American accent selected for ease of comprehension over radios etc.

TBH I always thought Bubbles had some of the best Speech Synthesizers available. And depending on who she's talking to, she can switch from completely natural to Uncanny Valley at will, for intimitation purposes.

Now that I think of it she probably defaults to mostly natural, with a hint of robot, at least in my head. Nothing uncanny.

(my bolding)

To be honest, that's why I imagine her sounding just like the announcement system in the stations over here.

Do you think Bubbles can go "full smooth operator" and talk with the smoothest velvety voice you can imagine?

Of COURSE! Majel. So should we ask Bubbles if she is holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx and heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed?

I always figured Bubbles to be a contralto or maybe a lady baritone based on her height and build.

Definitely a deeper voice, or she would just sound incongruent and silly.

Her team mates would not have been able to take her seriously.

Given that Bubbles was a military project, I think her voicebox might have been calibrated to match the recorded warnings military and airline pilots refer to as "Bitchin' Betty." -- a voice selected to engage a (male) pilot's attention through the hubbub of an aircraft cockpit during hectic times. Bubbles's voice might have acquired additional modulation along the way, as her AI accumulated life experiences and her installed voice became more hers.

Alternatively, Sumalee Montano somewhere between her voice for Arcee (TFPrime) and Nila (Critical Role S2).
