Is that a thumbs up or a thumbs down? Itd be the latter to momo.
Edit: up upon closer inspection I'm pretty sure shes just grabbing the piston of the hoist with that hand. Whoops.

Six to eight hours to restore a few inches of hair over a few square feet? There's gotta be a way to speed that up, probably with nanobots, or a mild electric current. Initiate Star Trek technobabble!

This comment actually made me curious what the average surface area of a human scalp is.  Apparently it's like .65 square feet.  Though maybe Momo's head would be on the large side, because...anime, I guess?

As long as she has enough Play-Doh in reserve - and can find someone to press hard on her pressure pump - new hair should be a matter of moments!

...what?

No, I meant...

...WAIT, I was....

Shit.

While I suppose the scalp is made of another material than her face, my first thought was that Momo was going to grow a beard or something from getting her whole head submerged.

I wonder if this is how Bubbles lengthens her hair or if she just reclines back into a sink basin.

to quote bubbles: this is more efficient. Bubbles only ever adding like two or three inches can wait for an hour with only her hair submerged. BUT THIS IS AN EMERGENCY, DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?

It's quite easy to forget that Momo, for all her kindness and desire to be a good person has a lot of repressed anger in her (mostly because of having to continually deal with Marigold and May). It certainly took Bubbles by surprise in panel 3! In fact, she looks positively daunted by a synthetic who is only about 1/2 her volume!

You know, I was wondering if this was going to be Faye and Bubbles' first in-relationship argument but, by the looks of things, Faye isn't really taking it to heart. Instead, she's just regressing to being a cheeky mid-teenager, which suggests that she isn't going to be worrying too much about it.

All I can say at this point is that something has to go wrong; the Rule of Funny demands it. Anyone else expecting Momo with a beard and moustache? I mean, aesthetics are individual after all, so I'm thinking that her current chassis may have been designed with giving that option to its resident! If that does happen, I'm expecting Faye to continue to remind Bubbles that she isn't saying anything at all and is just helping cut off the excess!

Finally, Terminator 2: Judgement Day reference in panel 4. :-D

I thought it was more about lengthening the already present strands of hair, so the scalp etc. would be irrelevant no?

In other words, to 'grow' a beard would only be possible if they first implant (e.g. by sewing) hair follicles (or strands I suppose) in her chin area.

I wouldn't call it either, it looks more like extreme eagerness to me. Just like Bubbles likely is not daunted or anything, just a little taken aback by the rather forceful expression of that eagerness  :-D

I think that citizenfive got it right.
To elaborate, the "hair" strands would only grow from their terminus and not branch off or thicken. There are already chemical processes that act similarly in both the natural as well as the industrial world.

Also if dutchrvl was correct in their supposition the solution would have been treated as hazardous to synthetics. Just think what could happen if it was misshandled or some got on ones hands .......  :clairedoge:

I don't know if it's been established that AI can voluntarily shut down/ go into sleep mode, but I sure hope that's the case. Even without the need to breath, I imagine being suspended upside-down with your head in a vat of chemicals would be a profoundly unpleasant experience.

I read it as fiery determination.  It appeared to be accompanied by a faint pink glow as well, though that may have been a reflection off of her remaining hair.

Possibly a stupid question.... maybe I missed something in a previous strip that would have answered this.

AI's, in general, all have a white mouth interior, but it appears that Momo's does not.  I do not know if this was always the case and I have simply not noticed this before, or if there was an art style change at some point that I hadn't previously picked up on, or if there is some in-story reason why this is the case.

It's rare that anything about AI's is explained - the hair thing is actually an exception.  That, and abs.

But yes, it seems that older/simpler/more "robotically" styled AIs (Pintsize, punchbot, the AI therapist) have mouths that may be something like an animated screen on the face, a mobile outline of a white "void".

Although Pintsize would eat cake batter, so there must be some kind of opening, probably only available when required by the rule of funny.

Later, more humanoid AIs (the store clerks when Momo went chassis shopping, even Momo's original chassis, heck even the practice boyfriend) have mechanical/structural mouths.

Then there's Seven (I think that was her name) who has  headlight for a face.  Or the robotic arm from the fight club.  No mouth at all!

Don't think too hard about it.  There's more variety in the world of AI than humans will ever have.  I was going to say, "Than humans can conceive", but you know, as AI "creators" we have conceived of all those varieties, and more we haven't even seen.

Which actually makes them a great model for a tolerant society...

I imagine being suspended upside-down with your head in a vat of chemicals would be a profoundly unpleasant experience.
I thought that the AIs have been getting excessively anthropomorphic lately, and this was a nice exception. Humans don't like being suspended upside down because our legs aren't especially great with tension, our circulatory system is degraded and our balance organs are disturbed. I think there may also be issues with respiration. I don't see that any of those need apply to Ai chassis. Humans generally don't have a problem with immersion in water, even cloudy water, so it also seems that shouldn't be a problem. OK it would be boring as hell to be suspended in one place for some hours, but 3846 established internal web browser, so she can just be reading web pages...

Bubbles is, no doubt, capable of maintaining a protracted hand-stand pose, probably for days if it was a tactical necessity.  A few hours in the vat would be no problem for her.  If Faye ever tells her, "Go soak your head," she might look in the mirror and reply, "That's a splendid idea!"

Be careful for what you wish for - I have male friends who have had their follicles transmigrated to other zones on their person - being complimented on the wool sweater is concerning when one is not wearing one.
