Okay, now this has the potential to become something weird that neither Momo nor Greybot understand. All I'll say is this: When you're dealing with Momo, who is, after all, virtually an animé character, you have to expect all aspects of her life to follow animé clichés. Except when the Rule of Funny demands that it does not, which will just make things that little bit more confusing and frustrating.

Meanwhile, I believe that Momo needs to learn that just because someone looks like a member of a certain subculture, doesn't mean that they are a member of a certain subculture. I'm still guessing that Greybot and Swordsmary are pretty vanilla really; one a legal assistant and the other a trainee CPA or something similar!

Bonus points for anyone who noticed the Yelling Bird cameo!

You could harvest corn with those pigtails.

Actually, I think that Jeph based them on the hairstyle of one Jenny Wakeman, a fellow synthetic trying to pass as human for a variety of reasons.

I don't think this is a hair related one; the colours make a Spanish flag.

Instances like that are the mane reason why you shouldn't change the subject of puns unless it's 1500% obvious to a deaf and blind person.

On the other hand, there used to be a lot of cafés coiffeurs, with now a bit of resurgence as barbershop bars.

But let's not split hairs over this. It wasn't exactly a lousy pun.

Au lait (french: "with milk" ) is a homophone to "Olé" - tired old pun in Europe, but I wasn't sure about the USnians, so I went back and added the Spanish colors so...

Well, there ya go. Most of my fellow 'Murricans know this about flags: There's the Stars and Stripes, and (so we hear) there are others. And the only thing we really wanna know about our own flag is, why ain't you flyin' one, son? And why are you disrespectin' the colors (we ask from our flag-patterned folding camp chairs, wearing our beer-stained "Try burning this one, ***hole!" T-shirts that themselves need a respectful burnin' or at least a trip through the washing machine)? We hear them-there Canadians have a flag with a leaf on it or something and they're all right, we suppose.

I'm starting to think that Momo has never heard punk music and is about to fall for it simply because others can't stop bugging her about it...of the characters, she would be the one who appreciates the artistic integrity of the music and lyrics that some bands were able to achieve and who sustained success vs. ones who were simply all about being anti-establishment thus burned out quickly when the mystique wore off and their lack of playing abilities were exposed.

I want to complain about Jeph harping on and on about music snobs and pointless debates about bands whose heydays were 40+ years ago but it's a return to what made the strip work in the beginning...it's just like his jokes about hipsters and their "best bands you never heard of" snobbery that Marten grumbled about for a while.

Heh, Lemmy bot would be cool but let's face reality - there was only one punk band that mattered and before that was St. Pete & The Who.

It's funny how certain things seem to be universally known, like Pippi Longstocking. It never ocurred to me until recently that names like that get translated.

Momo is a sweet kid, but she's kinda in over her head. At least in the way she likes to treat things - never be unprepared. She's prone to overthinking, and if an AI does overthinking it's a. lot.

The thing is, Momo is the least developed AI in the comic. She also retains a degree of innocence that really should have been lost some time ago. In a way, I think that's her flaw. Not the innocence, but that she's never allowed herself to explore the world other than this rather narrow view she has. Yes, she'll talk to someone but at the end of the day, there has been no real change on Momo's side of things. Even Winslow has stepped out of the comfort zone and I'm wondering if Jeph is using the hair as a way to give Momo a chance to have some character development.

After reading this comic for over 10 years, I've decided to make an account to mention that a few comics ago it sounded like Momo was only going to be on the hook for paying for materials via the "pal discount", but today's comic (Friday) sounds like she only paid $47 for labor.

Unless I'm a moron which is a distinct possibility

Well, Faye suggested she pay only for materials, but Momo insiste on supporting their business. The $47 is what's left of her payment, once the materials are paid for. Which means that $47 is going to have to cover that days share of electricity, rent of both workspace and apartment, insurance, food, taxes, etc.

Well, Bubbles, I think Faye was joking right up until she opened her mental balance sheet and realised just how badly you guys are doing. The fact is that you two need a few more four-figure jobs if this shop is going to last more than a few months!

Yes, it looks like things are getting tough for Faye and Bubbles and I believe that the time has come to revisit some options that they previously rejected like bribing Clinton to spam around good on-line reviews. I don't think that they'd have to pay May to sing and dance whilst wearing an advertising sandwich board and handing out promotional leaflets; something tells me she'd regard that as recreation. The big problem would be paying for the materials!

I wonder if this is all being set up for some kind of surprise "sugar daddy" reveal. The two ideas that occur to me are:
  • Punchbot offers them the exclusive maintenance deal for the legal robot fighting arena;
  • SpookyBot makes them an offer that they cannot refuse, if they want to cover their rent and bills. That said, carrying out the modifications to turn a set of mild-mannered synthetics into superheroes seems a bit strange.
Regarding the second option, I was inspired by a guest strip (I think it was by Danielle Corsetto) where Pintisize tries to convince the Synthetic Ladies to be lady wrestlers. I just loved the costumes and gimmick weapons!

The real problem is that they are performing repairs on highly complex machinery for about the same price that RL people pay to repair a clothes dryer.

It depends. The work I did in IT would sometimes have a much better result if I gave processes time to complete rather than attempt to accelerate them. If I had to go out to a customer site then there wouldn't be much else I could do, so that time had to be billable. But if I was in the office the waiting time could be used for admin, other projects, all sorts of stuff, so I wouldn't generally account for it. Note that this was internal accounting.

You should consult a lawyer. Not for legal advice, but advice on double-billing. You'll be billed for it, of course.

Indeed. They are charging too little. If the cost of parts was $100, I'd expect the cost for this repair to be somewhere around $250~$300 given the complexity and skill involved, for a profit of $150-$200: it's not something Momo could have done for herself after all.

I'm guessing that they didn't actually have to *pay* for these parts though - already in stock, I'm guessing they are just running down the inherited inventory at the moment, with so few clients.

They need someone who understands business to talk about profit and loss to them. i.e, Dora or Jim, or at the extreme Beatrice Chatham (Hannelore's mum), but I think she'd be too aggressive in pricing for them.

I just thought of another idea:  if Roko takes May's suggestion that she help her get a decent chassis, that might generate some revenue for UR. After all, she knows they give a decent service, and if she'd get a charity off the ground, it might not be an illogical step.

Okay. Quick question. Who here does NOT in fact have a local Chinese take-put place near where they live called Panda Garden?

Regarding the second option, I was inspired by a guest strip (I think it was by Danielle Corsetto) where Pintisize tries to convince the Synthetic Ladies to be lady wrestlers. I just loved the costumes and gimmick weapons!

There actually isn’t a Panda Garden in Northampton. But there is one in Williamsburg MA, just a few miles north on Route 9.

I don't recall ever seeing one, actually (in Sydney). So I resorted to The Almighty Oracle.

According to Google, there's one about 20 minutes drive from me. And there's another in Nowra, which I don't think qualifies as "near."

Not all hours of labour are labour-hours.

I am aware. That's why I was wondering how involved they had to be in the process. If one of them had to stay with Momo at all times in the event something went horribly/hilariously wrong, it would be reasonable to call those billable hours.

If they just had to dunk her, make sure she was secure, and then they could go do other stuff, not so much.

No, but we do have a place called Pak Fook House.
Its been locally nicknamed as "Pak Fuck Off", largely due to the rather shitty attitude of the owner to anyone who complains.
