I thought I'd got it, but now I'm unsure, because I have no idea what the post by traroth is supposed to be explaining, or why you need to be American to get it.

The word is also used as slang for a male body part.

It could be all of those things.

Meanwhile, I much prefer a cockentrice.

And you don’t need to be American to get it. It’s been used that way since at least the time of Shakespeare - probably longer, but it definitely shows up in Hamlet.

Perhaps it's rather the censoring?

Perhaps it's rather the censoring?
I see it as a take on the scunthorpe problem, I.e. computers inability to see the difference between a bad word used as a bad word or as a part of something innocent, and in order to censor bad words they add weird forms of search-and-replace which causes the clbuttic problems of completely incomprehensible words. Buttbuttination, Bdonkey guitar, Mbuttachusetts and Bleepake mushrooms are examples from TV tropes, as is the movie Octokittykat.

I'm thinking it should be Beep-atrice. Sort of self-censored. And would go nice with a Basilisk.

That gets more clever the longer I think about it. I absolutely love it.

I thought everyone would get that !! :)

I still don't get it...

Both the cockatrice and basilisk are mythical animals that could turn someone to stone.

Ok... Sorry to break it to you, but you have to be american to get "beepatrice". Here we call a cock a cock...

I'm American and that never occurred to me. And my mind is dirty the normal amount.

Indeed.  There are people shipping Roko and Bee when the former has never given any indication of being anything but hetro (a yeasty hetro but still hetro) and we have no idea of Bee's orientation at all.  Might we be sex obsessed?

Now, I can see them serving as each other's wingbots.  And a double date with Roko & Clinton and Barry & Bee could be hilarious.

It is good to see Roko hitting it off with a new friend, albeit awkwardly.

Okay, for some reason, some posters have decided that Beeptrice's name is a reference to the mythological beast known as the cockatrice, which is similar to the basilisk in its mystical properties and special abilities. The word 'cock' is how some versions of English language refer to roosters (male chickens). It is also a slang term for penis and it appears that some have, for no reason I can grasp myself, have assumed it's a double-entendre and a shipping hint.

FWIW, I think that Jeph intended the name to be a robotisation of 'Beatrice' but maybe I'm conventional and boring.

Interviews gone wrong:

Years ago I worked in value village/savers. New hires had to go around and ask current employees harmless things like favourite whatever.

SO this very attractive redhead comes over to my area of the store, and we chat a little bit. So she asks what's your favourite food. Now I had just been at an art gallery opening and they had those little store bought pastries that were chilled and filled with whip cream, and I was obsessed with them. So things had been going well, and I look her right in the eye with a smile and say

"I like creampies."

I stood there a couple seconds before the look of horror hit me, a moment after she looked absolutely shocked. I start trying to explain the above that I meant the little pastries, but I lose it and start laughing at myself, and she starts laughing (thankfully). Between gasping for air I tell her "cream puffs, that's what I meant! please...pizza, just write pizza, I swear they'll never let me forget this otherwise..."

I vaguely remember interviews mostly as terrifying things, but I sorta remember getting one interviewer talking about government conspiracies, another to over-share past traumas, and I think some story about when they got too high or something.

The birth of the reader is the death of the author.  What Jeph meant is irrelevant; from now and henceforth forever, Beep-atrice is a reference to the mythical animal.

Premature for a ship, sure.  Premature to speculate that they'll create a petrifaction ray together, I think not.

The beeping of cuss words. I knew what a cockatrice is, but I couldn't get what a "beepatrice" is.

Yeah, that 's why I hid the cock (rooster) picture. It was an attempt to be funny, thinking about people clicking to see the picture, not expecting to see a rooster at all, but I think most people didn't get it. My bad. Or rather, a good illustration how a circumvoluted joke is lost for some people...
