Faye isn't really saying anything surprising to Marten. Really, what she's trying to say is that Marten shouldn't worry about it
too much because he's survived before.
I am quite interested in what she said about her break-up with Angus. At the time, I had the feeling that the problem was that Angus wasn't really thinking about Faye's feelings at all. He just assumed that she'd go with him because she was his girlfriend. Angus had previously danced around the issue of the future and clearly didn't want to talk about it. It was obvious that it had never occurred to him that Faye
wouldn't want to stay with him in some way no matter what the circumstances.
I think that Faye was genuinely into Angus but this emotional stake had developed
before they questioned whether their desires for the future went in the same direction. That, if nothing else, is the parallel between them and Marten and Claire's relationship because Claire is too insecure to look to the future and Marten too unwilling to rock the boat. So, maybe that's the lesson to learn: Marten and Claire need to be sure that they really do want to be together no matter what before some major decision gate appears on the path immediately ahead. FWIW, in retrospect, Jeph made it clear that Faye
didn't have that confidence, given how she started drinking heavily the moment the possibility of Angus moving away presented itself.
Marten can't be a flower person. He showers regularly and has a job.
Besides, I have a strong feeling that he'll end up giving away one of the ladies in question.
