Faye isn't really saying anything surprising to Marten. Really, what she's trying to say is that Marten shouldn't worry about it too much because he's survived before.

I am quite interested in what she said about her break-up with Angus. At the time, I had the feeling that the problem was that Angus wasn't really thinking about Faye's feelings at all. He just assumed that she'd go with him because she was his girlfriend. Angus had previously danced around the issue of the future and clearly didn't want to talk about it. It was obvious that it had never occurred to him that Faye wouldn't want to stay with him in some way no matter what the circumstances.

I think that Faye was genuinely into Angus but this emotional stake had developed before they questioned whether their desires for the future went in the same direction. That, if nothing else, is the parallel between them and Marten and Claire's relationship because Claire is too insecure to look to the future and Marten too unwilling to rock the boat. So, maybe that's the lesson to learn: Marten and Claire need to be sure that they really do want to be together no matter what before some major decision gate appears on the path immediately ahead. FWIW, in retrospect, Jeph made it clear that Faye didn't have that confidence, given how she started drinking heavily the moment the possibility of Angus moving away presented itself.

And that is one of many reasons why I think Marten and his friends are getting ahead of themselves in this situation. The other reasons include;

(1) Claire has to actually pass her exams AND successfully defend her doctorate thesis before she can get her degree. Neither is guaranteed at this point.

(2) She has to utter fail to get a librarian job anywhere in decent commuting distance of Northampton.

(3) She also has to land a job at least a State or two away. Again, neither of these last two is guaranteed either; she may find she can't get a job ANYWHERE!

IMO, if Claire is able to get her degree, then can only find a job in another state several hours' drive (or flight!) from Northampton, THEN she and Marten are going to need to have a serious talk about their future together. Until then, there is little point in sweating the what-ifs.

Oh dear god, no! That would be the worst idea in the long, sad history of bad ideas. Sam would probably take it onto herself to go into the woods, get loads of snakes and release them during the ceremony.

Jim and Dora went out on one date and Dora always got the impression that Sam didn't like her (that said, Dora wasn't particularly keen on her if I remember correctly). Personally, I don't think those arguments are mutually exclusive. At the time, Faye may have thought it to be cowardice, but over time she realised she was never ready. She probably didn't have the emotional stability she has now.
There's a chance she'd take that risk for Bubbles now. But I guess we'll never know, as they've just started their business, and need to see it start off before going anywhere else.

That's one thing about Marten and Faye. They've lived together for long enough that they can and will start playing off of each other because they know exactly when the other is kidding and the other's idea of what is funny. So you get them giving each other straight lines and the like. It's times like this when I appreciate just the degree that they've become siblings in all but blood in a lot of ways.

This is true but there is this thing called 'character development' as well as the passage of time. It is quite possible that, in the six months or so since that point, Faye has had the time to think and decide that she made the right choice; that no matter how much she liked Angus, it wasn't going to work out long-term. As I posted yesterday, on a subconscious level at least, Faye seemed to know it was over the moment Angus got his audition, given her reaction to it.

Marten and Faye will be lifelong friends, no matter the distance. although they never have been lovers, and (probably) never will be, there's everything else there for a long term relationship. and in this case, that relationship is "just" friends.

Remember that when Faye and Angus split, Faye was still abusing alcohol on a regular basis.  Which goes a way toe plain her self loathing evidenced in her statement.  She's in recovery now, supported by her friends and at least one other person who she has a strong emotional attachment to.  She may be looking at things with a new sense of herself.

Consider what might have happened if she uprooted herself, lost her community, felt isolated in New York.  Her al nihilism would have gotten worse and things may have ended tragically.
