Remember that when Faye and Angus split, Faye was still abusing alcohol on a regular basis.  Which goes a way toe plain her self loathing evidenced in her statement.  She's in recovery now, supported by her friends and at least one other person who she has a strong emotional attachment to.  She may be looking at things with a new sense of herself.

Consider what might have happened if she uprooted herself, lost her community, felt isolated in New York.  Her al nihilism would have gotten worse and things may have ended tragically.

My manager mentioned the other day that she had the same birthday as the second president, John Quincey Adams.

I couldn't let that one go either...

 :-P

In a "wrong Adams" sense, or in a "damn, you're really old then" sense?

Aaaiiiah! This is so cool. Completely unexpected to me, but makes a lot of sense. I like the idea of a wedding with no flower girl, just a bunch of happy people witnessing two people who are bloody delighted to commit themselves to each other for the rest of their lives. I imagine that Dora will break out some previously unseen rock guitar skills at some point during the reception. Or maybe Dora and Tai will turn out to be ridiculously good at karaoke together?

So, to recall Jeph's rant on social media around when one of the characters called a snake's bite 'poisonous', I am willing to bet that Jeph knows which Roosevelt but Faye doesn't.

I have to say, I really, really love that he puts that in there.

I remember when my students were doing Parade as their major project, because half of them were playing illiterates their character dialogue talked about people being 'hung' rather than 'hanged,' which completely destroyed their chances of getting that right in conversation during lessons about the context of the play.

Sometimes autocorrect is kind of a poet... I read "all nihilism", wich made sense to me. Only after your comment I realized it was an artifact.

I thought "al nihilism" was a portmanteau - Faye was nihilistic and since nothing mattered may as well drown everything with alcohol. :D

Doonk is an adorable sound effect but I'm worried about Claire's turn toward violence.  It's a dangerous road.

I cannot even tell you how gleeful it makes me that Claire already specifically knew what she wanted to kick. You can say it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but I will always know in my heart that Claire was GUNNING for that little trashcan. Also, this plays in my head as a "bring me the prisoner/bring me your fattest sow" moment and it's so great.

Something tells me that Claire has, since she tore apart a load of official documentation because she "didn't take orders from home wreckers" and nearly blew everything, gone to a lot of effort to teach herself to control her temper. It's sort of a new thing for her to be so restrained and I'm wondering if she was even really that anxious or if she was just feeling that she had to make out that she was that anxious for some reason!

We'll probably know when Tai gives Marten another power hug. Or another break up.

My guess? The worst outcome is that both Dora and Tai come to Marten separately, asking him what they should do (this has happened before). In talking them into doing what they already know is the right choice, he realises something about his own relationship with Claire.

Eh, them talking to Marten could be a double edged sword. Because it could make either Tai or Dora realise something about their own relationship.

And lets be honest, out of all the cast, Marten is the one we definitely know saw the least happy aspects of marriage, along with Claire. It might be better for Tai and/or Dora to talk to someone neutral to their situation.

it may be as good to talk to someone who knows something about a failing marriage. We have Marten's parents (which wasn't bad, because it was for a less typical reason, and they're still friends), Claire's parents (which sounds like a really nasty thing), and we have Jim (since it appears to me Jim and his ex have shared custody over Sam, it can't be that bad).

A possibility right now would be Dora saying something like "Honey, I'm not disinclined to the whole marriage thing, but let's not get ahead of us right now." - remember, it was a spur of the moment decision to propose. And this is a reasonable answer to an emotional situation, in emotional matters.

Since it will take some time before Claire finds out for sure (oh, hell.  She did great)  that particular arc can go onto a simmer.  Jeph does strips full of feels, Tai and Dora work towards a yes, and maybe we see Hanners or others drop in for a visit.  Call me a  cockeyed optimist, but I'd like some happy endings.

I hesitated to post this since I am not a trans woman, but I was reminded by Claire's reaction (last panel) of how TERFs (and probably others, but I've seen it mostly from TERFs) will take any expression of anger from trans women, especially physical, and argue that as violence that stems from them being "male." Like, a lot of trans woman I know are terrified of expressing anger or doing anything that will get them labeled as "dangerous," no matter how unjust that label is. So when Claire apologizes for being "violent" here, I sort of see that anxiety mixed in. That connection might definitely not be intended, and it could be more about Claire's personal progress in controlling her temper or, more simply, for humor. It just stirs up a lot of familiarity to conversations I've heard in the past.

Maybe the whole adulting thing is beginning to hit Claire?  Since her mom and brother live there, moving for her job means walking away from all that is familiar.   Marten needs to turn his support and compassion up to 11.

Not wanting to sound pedantic, but did someone misspell "misspelled"? it's kind of amusing.

Edit: I just remembered something weird but funny.

If there's a Fucking, Austria, why not a Fucksburg, Montana?

You know, some places have thermal springs, and people built spas and wellness resorts around those. If places had spas for some time, they actually make their town names reflect that. In German, that's done by adding a "Bad" in front of the original name (Bad meaning "bath", since those places have/had public baths at the springs). Two examples would be Bad Reichenhall and Bad Vöslau.
Now, a few years ago there was an Austrian movie, that turned Fucking into one of those towns, and the movie was even named after that (technically fictional) town named... "Bad Fucking".

And bearing on any decision would be state and local laws bearing on Claire being trans?
Claire has pulled off an apparently flawless transition - outside of her family the only people who know her status are those she has told.  If anyone else has guessed, they aren't letting on.  Neither she nor Clinton have been shown encountering any childhood friends suggesting they grew up elsewhere.   If she turned up in the middle of Montana I don't think anyone would guess and there's not likely to be anyone to out her.

Montana's a big place and there's literally lots of room for differing attitudes.  As politically conservative as it may be, some areas can be surprisingly tolerant.

Today's strip (4/18/19) is bittersweet in many ways. It's lovely that, as always, Claire is a page or two ahead of Marten when it comes to thinking of the future. On the other hand, it says a lot about her anxieties that she's been reluctant to bring it up. After all she and Marten have been through together, there is still a part of her that expects to come second if it comes to a choice.

I wonder if Marten will explain to her that his first reaction was that of course he'll go with her, it's just that being uprooted doesn't sound fun?

On the flip side, Marten is still sufficiently college boy to love the idea of living somewhere with a weird name just so that he can make sophomoric jokes about it!

Claire might be trapped between anxiety/overthinking, legitimate reactions and not letting it show.

I personally know of a couple of extremely liberal Episcopalian parishes in Montana and I have read that Matthew Sheppard's parish was supportive of him long before that was common in this Church.

Perhaps Claire would like instead to take Marten to Pleasure Point.
And then they could visit Climax.
Kansas has some weird town names

Of course, international options could be interesting. Crossing the Atlantic they could probably be comfortable in places like Dicksboro or Hackballs Cross, maybe breathe in the fresh air at Fartrim. Cum or Spunkane might be awkward getting to. Slutsend and Bastardstown, easy enough to get to on the train from Dublin. Oh, and I can't forget Muff.

(And yes, they are all real places)
