WCDT Strips 4011-4015 (27th-31st May, 2019)
« on: 25 May 2019, 21:14 »

Trying to keep this poll international friendly. An introspective Memorial Day to my fellow Americans, though.

EDIT: This is all I could think of because I'm pretty sure my D&D character basically has a Mothra egg. BTW, just search "kaiju" on wikipedia to see why this list isn't a lot longer. Too many options.

Yesterday I learned that the narrator of the English version of Ultraman X is the guy from Supermarket Sweep, and now I really want to see (the English dub of) that movie.

The Criterion collection edition of Godzilla is really great.  It has the original Japanese version, dubbed OR subtitled, the Raymond Burr version, plus a ton of e tras.

Actually the only loosely-defined Kaiju film I've ever liked is the 1998 Godzilla. Furthermore, I'm advised that it is different enough from the mainstream Kaiju genre to not count at all.

I did say it was a long list and that I'm lazy.
The giant bug genre counts as kaiju according to the wiki page, so I'd have to include Them! and The Fly if I went by the list. Hell, I didn't include the Japanese live-action Spider series. And that's the origin of sentai series (which I'm going to now add). Generally, I just included franchises that had a series of movies, episodes, or games (or some combination thereof).

EDIT: Frankenstein Conquers The World has a direct sequel titled The War of the Gargantuas, which itself spawned two companion  piece movies.

Sir, you may make excuses, but you must still hand in your kaiju badge! And your novelty Godzilla hat! You are banished from the Kaiju Club! For a period of no more than three weeks.

And Mothra is a member of the Toho stable of Kaiju, second only to Godzilla for the number of films she has appeared in (17 films since 1961).

On one hand, Jeph already told that exact story before. (Right down to Sven's partner declaring it a one-time thing, and then making it weird.)

On the other hand, telling that story with a very different ending is a way to illustrate character growth.

Just a thought.  We're all hot n' bothered about Sven and May getting together.  But when you think about it, aren't Faye and Bubbles engaged, to some extent, rather similar activity?  Albeit the emotional context is pretty much entirely different, it's still a Human/AI sexual relationship.

True, Sven and May are not breaking new ground in synthetic/organic relations.

I wonder how common s/o sexual relations are in the QC universe. There doesn't seem to be a taboo. We've only seen two, but that's from a small sample.

Expecting any fundamental similarities between Faye-Bubbles and Sven-(whomever, really) simply because each relationship involves one H sap and one humaniform AI is ... well, c'mon.

One involves a guy who wants commitment from his counterpart, but is not willing to put the work in himself, notwithstanding the identity or even basic physical makeup of said counterpart. Steve hit the nail square when he asked Sven, rhetorically, if he always got everything he wanted for Christmas.

The other involves two nascent functional adults who give a damn about each other, know little about the work ahead of them except that there is a lot of it and they're willing to do it, and will likely give something of a damn about each other even if the experiiment fails.

Hardly similar at all, really.

Oh, absolutely!  The lady doth protest too much, or at least too early.  She may be speaking to Sven, but she's talking to May.  It's just a matter of which one will be the first to reveal the tattoo or laser etching.  Who among us hasn't suspected Sven would turn into a decent person once he grew up?  And May is no exception to the rule that even the most prickly hard-asses are that way to protect their sweet and tender innards.  Jeph may take it in another direction, but this scenario offers lots more romantic comedy fodder than other alternative plot lines.

I still think Mrs. Bartholomew Punchbot is a bigshot human academic and one of the people who evaluated Evie's paper.

I think that this strip has pretty much the most stereotypical examples of Sven and May that we've seen for some time. Both of them are light-hearted and are experts at emotional avoidance. So you have a comedic double-act so both of them avoid having to consider their emotions too closely during conversation.

May, if you think that Lockheed have any interest in butt-based advertisements, you know them not. They put their stuff in Flight International or on the side of space rockets, nowhere else. Seriously, though, you still want to be a fighter jet, don't you girl? I still say you need to find out if Ellicott-Chatham are recruiting AI autopilots for any of their shuttle planes!

What's the bet May "makes this weird"? I mean, emotionally, not as in with the watermelon and the lube.

I'm not convinced at this point that the thing between Sven and May is going to go any further than them hanging out during May's breaks and needling each other good-naturedly. Both of them are behaving in a way that suggests that they have no real interest in a return engagement. It might happen but only due to continued mutual curiosity.

The key outcome of this arc, IMO, is that May will be more willing to consider approaching someone she is attracted to and that Sven will be able to look at synthetics and not see issues to prevent a hook-up

Because he'd win.
jk jk
I mostly did the poll on traditional Kaiju movies, tv series, and video games (and laziness) that had multiple entries in at least one continuity. I'm still not sure how I know F.C.t.W. has a sequel, but I think it was either from a comicbook adaptation, or a Simpson comicbook parody.

EDIT: I didn't know it had three sequels until I read the wikipage, though.

One involves a guy who wants commitment from his counterpart, but is not willing to put the work in himself, notwithstanding the identity or even basic physical makeup of said counterpart.

I think this is incredibly uncharitable towards Sven as we have seen him recently in the comic, hell it isn't even an accurate description of him before.

Yeah, he was a disaster during his last time he was a regular, but that was also quite a while back in the comic, but Faye was the one who wanted commitment without having to put in the work of it being an actual relationship. Sven has always seemed fine if people weren't committed to him (other than the like 2-3 strips where he tried to win Faye back, which were yes dumb, but I don't think I would characterize that time period as "not wanting to put in the work himself" as much as not knowing how), in fact, past Sven would have preferred women not commit at all to him. No guilt that way.

I find it weird how often people see characters in the comics as "protagonists and antagonists" rather than just people being people.

To elaborate on the "protagonists and antagonists" bit. Every single thing we've seen Sven do from showing up at the bar to todays strip has been A+ good dude. But still, people have to come into the thread to shit on him despite the fact that in this interaction he's done literally nothing wrong.

Dale is the stern Dad?

(Actually, Dale would probably make a great Dad!)

What's with the random bolding of words in May's last speech bubble? It doesn't seem to be a very natural pattern of emphasis (though on re-reading it seems less jarring than it did initially).

I think it'd be better with the bolding removed on "you", "talking", "now", and perhaps "intended", and added to "isn't". Of course, that's just my opinion, which is worth as much as you paid to read it.

May is remarkably not-nonchalant about this ...

Not would, will.  Sooner or later he and Marigold are gonna spawn.

This strip was just beautiful and I've been laughing about it since I first saw it.

The first point of this strip is the revelation is that May does care enough about other people's opinions of her so that she can do the Walk of Shame. Enough to lie about something that, at most, would inspire Dale to ask if she had a good time and drop the matter (because he obviously respects her autonomy). It suggests to me that this has been a stronger emotional experience than she was expecting.

The second point is something that we've known for a long time and that is that May really likes Dale but feels unable to admit it because she's so committed to this 'misanthropic curmudgeon' persona that she's always using. It's tragic in a way that she has such a hard time admitting that Dale might be her friend. Historically, other people have had to tell her that they're her friends (like Momo) and she's been happy to have them. It's just a reminder of how profoundly hurt she's been by her past misadventures.

May is remarkably not-nonchalant about this ...

Yeah, I have to agree with all the people who say that, if anyone is going to be 'weird about this', it's going to be May. It seems to be Sven's curse that he has casual hook-ups and is just so good at it that it turns casual interest into full-blown attraction. We'll see where this goes because, as first boyfriends go, he's just about the most challenging option.

Actually the only loosely-defined Kaiju film I've ever liked is the 1998 Godzilla. Furthermore, I'm advised that it is different enough from the mainstream Kaiju genre to not count at all.

That would be GINO (Godzilla in name only) you're talking about, and no, he doesn't count.  It was Jurassic Park in New York.

So now I ge why May got caught when she couldn't resist the impulse to steal 750 millions. She really is a terrible liar.

Personally, I think May may need some time to process all of this.
Also, I think she even said out loud that she's thankful Dale took her in both as hologram and physical person. And I think that's why she was invested in making the Marbear/Dale thing work, both helping initiating it, and keeping it up. Also, gross exchange of even grosser bodily fluids.
