Fruit Sisters roll call
« on: 23 Jul 2019, 06:05 »

In comic #3906 - Family Citrus, Lemon states she has 2048 sisters (including Melon).

Anyone care to help me compile a list of names?

Alternatively, you could say the name of your favorite fruit. If it hasn't already been listed, feel free to make the text pink or yellow.

EDIT: *derp* Forgot link
EDIT 2: Feel free to suggest possible personality quirks or professions as well.

Here's 68 72 arranged from A-W (I couldn't quickly find any that started with X, Y, or Z).

Apple
Apricots
Avocado
Banana
Blackberries
Blackcurrant
Blueberries
Breadfruit
Cantaloupe
Carambola
Cherimoya
Cherries
Clementine
Coconut Meat
Cranberries
Custard-Apple
Damson
Date Fruit
Durian
Elderberries
Feijoa
Figs
Gooseberries
Grapefruit
Grapes
Guava
Habanero
Honeydew Melon
Jackfruit
Java-Plum
Jalapeño
Jujube Fruit
Kiwifruit
Kumquat
Lemon
Lime
Longan
Loquat
Lychee
Mandarin
Mango
Mangosteen
Mulberries
Nectarine
Olives
Orange
Papaya
Passion Fruit
Peaches
Pear
Persimmon
Pineapple
Pitanga
Plantain
Plums
Pomegranate
Prickly Pear
Prunes
Pummelo
Quince
Raspberries
Rose-Apple
Sapodilla
Sapote, Mamey
Soursop
Strawberries
Sugar-Apple
Tomato
Tomatillo
Tamarind
Tangerine
Watermelon

EDIT: Screw it. Not having jalapeños, habaneros, tomatoes, and tomatillos on their was going to bug the crap out of me.
EDIT 2: I should have double-checked the list. As it's been pointed out, rhubarb is indeed only eaten as a vegetable as the seed pods (and leaves) will make you quite sick.

A couple of her Brazilian sisters (that I've had caipirinhas made from):
Cashew
Cajá (as far as I know there's no commonly accepted English term for this fruit. Wikipedia uses the term 'hog plum', but also uses it for several unrelated species.)

And a rural American sister:
Paw paw

I am tempted to throw in Sarsaparilla, if you accept that.

Question is: are all 2048 (or is it 2049, actually?) fruits? Could it be some are named after minerals, like Lapislazuli, or Indigo?

And is there wn octarine sister?

Rhubarb's a vegetable.  It does a damn fine job of masquerading as fruit in pies, etc., but it's still a veg.

I ran into that sort of thing with every one of the first few lists. That one is easy to miss.
Mistaking broccoli and radishes as fruit is unforgivable, though.

Why are there 2049 in all? 2048 is a round number in binary; 2049 isn't anything.

We've got some overlap between the two long ones, but that's okay.

Given the number of sisters, and they few we have seen, it may be a little presumptuous to assume they are ALL fruit-related.
Maybe there are veg and pulses and nuts too!

(Cos they all seem a BIT nuts!?)  :)

I finally decided to show up in here, and Joe spoiled my dissenting fun.  :-P

We know that Melon has one sister named Lemon, and so naturally we assume that all 2048 must be named after fruits. When it could even be that the only ones named after fruits are those two.

Or there could be a scheme based on foods. Or colours. Or their most prominent characteristic, whatever that is. Or they could all just have five-letter names. Or...

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

Using my limited ability with search engines and atrocious typing skills I have come across the following in the X, Y, Z range of fruits.

Yangmei
Yantok
Yardlong bean
Yellow buckeye - ineddible
Yellow granadilla
Yellow mombin
Yellow oleander - poisinous
Yellow plum
Yew cones with seeds unremoved - no eat with seed or else end up killdead
Youngberry
Yuzu
Zig-zag vine fruit
Zucchini
Zwetschge

I included legumes and  the like since they are technically part of the plants fruiting bodies that are consumed

I would like to add to the list in no particular order
Sweet Pea
Currant - Black, Red and white though red is my fave and my bushes are ready for harvest early this year.  :-D
(click to show/hide)
Mulberry because as kids we feasted on these every summer and our tree was HUGE with MASSIVE fruits, no little thanks to being within a few yards of the compost heap in the corner of the garden.

They all use an 11-bit offset to address their internal table of sisters’ information. The table doesn’t include themself.

Aren't tomatoes more useful than bards, though?

AD&D Bard Kicked hiney with Fighter combat abilities - Rogue skills - Druidic Spells
3.5 Bards, depending on archetype and prestige classes could step in for any of the other core classes.

Bard's Tale Bards were monsters - more so with a full party of Bards

Bards allow the rest of the party to survive in urban environments and at least cover the cost of food and lodging for the night with an impromptu jam at the local inn.

Also nobody ever thew a rotten Bard at a Tomato  :-D

Given the number of sisters, and they few we have seen, it may be a little presumptuous to assume they are ALL fruit-related.
Maybe they are all combinations of E, L, M, N and O , and the fruit is just a coincidence?

I checked into this.
Not allowing repetition gives you:
26 * 25 * 24 * 23 * 22 * 21 = 26!/20! = 165,765,600

So, that's probably not it.

JimC's sentence is ambiguous as written, but I think the post was meant to propose that each of the names was some combination of E, L, M, N, and O; not that the names included every combination.

Doesn't every non-repeating combination of 5 letters come out to 5!, which is only 120 combinations?
5 options for position 1 times 4 options for position 2, and so on?

If repetitions are allowed, the number goes up to 5^5 = 3125, which is of the same order of magnitude as Lemon's claim.

And Moooo, and Noooo. (I picture poor Meeee getting huge amounts of unneeded help, every time someone yells "Help meeee!") (Or when the end of "The Fly" plays.)

But probably better than being called Death Apple or Poison Berry...

I refuse to extrapolate from two examples, but I should not be at all surprised if Mr Jacques is gaining a litle quiet amusement from us trying.

Now can anyone come up with a third fruit that also only contains the required letters? The only other anagram of lemon I can think of is monel, which is a high strength corrosion resistant alloy of nickel and copper. Perhaps not  a bad name for an AI, but maybe a less ditsy one than the Lemon/Melon clan appears to be.

I would picture Monel as the mighty sailor of the group.

It's the swollen ovary of the plant's flower, so botanically it's a fruit.  Like may others, though, it's considered a vegetable in a culinary context.

Fruit is the seed-bearing part of a plant. All squash are fruit. So are cucumbers.

I feel like this is what Godwin would have written a Law about if he'd spent a lot of time hanging out in food forums.  :psyduck:

Just as all colour discussions, as they grow longer, invariably end with someone yelling BUT BLACK ISN'T A COLOUR.

There must be a whole family of these.
