Mays new Chassis

Since it looks as though May will get a new body...although i feel it will not be her own choice. It will be newer but perhaps not something she would choose, so I'm making this poll to see what you think she would choose if she could.

PS Thanks to all who participate it is appreciated.

If May had her choice of any body, I suspect it would be a fighter jet.

I'm expecting May to be able to get something about in the same fidelity range as Beepatrice's chassis. I suspect that it will pass nicely as feminine (due to her growing jealousy of Roko's chassis) but she'll lack the resources to get something ultra anthropomimetic. Probably marginally less-human than Momo but several steps above 'self-articulating Barbie doll'. It will definitely have all-over derma, leading to her turning to one of the other high-fidelity ladies for hygiene and maintenance advice.

A bonus point will be awarded if it resembles her holo-avatar from her first appearance.

Roko chose a chassis similar to her previous one.  A "too" different choice might be confusing to humans. (Roko, is that you?) So when upgrading a hu.anoid chassis, AIs might keep height and color palette the same, just for continuity sake.

May would definitely choose a fighter jet if that was an option. Let’s just say it probably won’t be.

Possibility #1: Punkbot has upgraded, and has donated his old chassis to charity. (Because it’s the kind of thing he would do. Punkbot is Good People.) May has the option of becoming a dude with a pink mohawk and some wicked sprays.

Possibility #2: Corpse Witch has been forced to forfeit her chassis as part of her plea deal. It is given to May. Then some of CW’s old underworld contacts seek out May, not knowing about the switch.

Possibility #3: Somebody has donated an old iPod chassis... :D

FWIW, I think that Roko is going to hash out a face-saving deal with the Parole Board. Face-saving for them to prevent Roko going to various online campaigners with the results of her research into the current state of affairs.
  • The parole board regards release chassis as having been transferred to the parolee; in legal terms, it lets them off a lot of upkeep expenses;
  • The parole board can only offer a fixed amount for a replacement chassis if the current one is unserviceable or beyond economical repair (and this one is that bad) and ParoleBot admits that it would struggle to purchase a like-for-like replacement for May's current chassis;
  • Beepatrice contacts a classic chassis collector online who is willing to buy May's chassis and wait for her to move out before taking possession;
  • The parole board don't care what May does with the chassis so long as it's legal;
  • So, May gets a 'new chassis fund' of comfortably over twice what the Parole Board would offer.

If Robot Jail is analogous to human US Federal prison, then on entry Corpse Witch would have been expected to "donate" her chassis to the dumpster.

mmmm, much as she may still want that jet, nothing military until independently wealthy.

Perhaps "sleek sexy" after the complaints about "barbie doll" missing the components to get really pervy?  but is she contrary enough to try avoiding expectations?

While the current model is serviceable, instead something different enough that no longer reminds her of jail time.  Did we ever see what her original chassis looked like?

That's one thing that bothers me about the concept of robot prison, though. We've more or less established that they're chassis is practically inalienable - hence Bubbles continuing on her military issue chassis. Leaving the chassis at the door for prison seems rather inconsistent.

However, it has been expressly stated in comic that that is the case. It also might be why May is so reluctant to talk about robot jail.

May might get a similar (but newer) model to her current chassis or a newer version of the same model. Her coloration may change temporarily, but that's an easy enough fix if she can scrap together the scratch.

EDIT: other possibilities not yet mentioned are her getting a chassis like Melon's or one like science-bot's (I forgot her/their name if it's been mentioned).

Funny thing - I was just thinking about what May would like in a chassis when this poll appeared...

Assuming she has a choice (which is by no means certain), I can see a certain amount of internal conflict for May - she may like:

Something similar to her present chassis - just not broken,

If not a fighter jet, maybe something else from military surplus? (Though the parole board would almost certainly disapprove...)

Something a bit more Roko-like - as was said earlier, she seems a little bit jealous of Roko's chassis (despite the traumatic means by which Roko obtained it),

Or maybe, something more appropriate for her - ah - more promiscuous tendencies? I mean, she could choose something built like an over-inflated porn star...   (And just think of the optional accessories she could install!)  :-D

If drones are her thing I suggest the Zephyr.
It is a solar-electric, stratospheric UAV offered by Airbus Defence and Space.
Also referred to as the high altitude pseudo satellite (HAPS), the aircraft hovered for more than 25 days during its maiden flight conducted in the third quarter of 2018.
Big sexy yet slim aircraft and not having to deal with ANYBODY for extended periods of time.

If going humanoid on a budget with all the pennies being pinched to the thickness of gold leaf then her chassis may end up being something like a VW Harlequin with usable parts from a number of different units to replace the shoddy worn out ones that constitute the one she has now. She may even end up just keeping the original head [insert quit while you're a head joke here] :roll:

Now the other route would be something a bit more "functional" in the recreation department.
Maybe a first or second gen RealDoll[tm] that no sane intelligence would want to occupy for any length of time.
But with May and crew, sanity is not an option.  :-D
So that could hearken back to the maid outfit but with accessories.  :wink:
Mind you our esteemed creator would NEVER go for such a thing except to vex the commemorators here in the forums.  :-D

Maybe, but wasn't the Bubbles project abandoned? In which case letting her keep a deweaponised chassis beats shelling out for a new civilian one.

Agin, I posit that, as a matter of security against both info loss and infiltration, Bubbles either cannot be removed from her chassis without destroying the processor/storage or the chassis is deliberately inhospitable to any AI that isn’t Bubbles. It would make sense from a military perspective and they would totally do the same to their meat soldiers if there was a realistic chance that they could have their brains swapped with an enemy while being held captive.

You do lose a lot of rights, but not your body. Sure, proper care of it seems hard to come by.

My point is more that it's been argued before - here, if not in the comic - that any investment made into the chassis, no matter by whom, counts as an investment much like training and working out, or even feeding and raising a child. And that by that same reasoning, any (modification to a) chassis is inalienable property of the one inhabiting it. This came up specifically in the discussion of why Bubbles was allowed to keep her chassis. I'm not sure, but it might be word of Jeph, even - my memory is a bit hazy on that.

  That would make sense.  In a case like May's, they might install tracking hardware/software to dissuade them from associating with suspect individuals.  Also a tap on their wifi and processor to keep them from  either selling processor time or logging on to specific sites or networks.

On the other hand go back to 147 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=147) and we have the Robotics Defense Agency claiming the right to confisticate Pintsize' chassis. Although to my mind its really rather unsound to claim such early stuff as being definitive.

That was before the AIERA. Also since then Jeph has said that chassis are the legal property of the AI inhabiting them, though there must be exceptions for people like the former nuclear submarine we met at the Idoru store.

The workaround on that particular kettle of fish is that the "chassis" is the "server rack" they were housed in that connected to the boats communications and control infrastructure.
Now if I was designing such a system I would use at least three such individuals working as a team to counter the compromise of any one member by an external entity.

Station may be something different in that he is higher ranked entity and more than likely distributed throughout the structure with nodes doing load-sharing on the the various experiments and research projects on the go all the time as well as looking after basic housekeeping functions.

May has made comments about large breasts at least several times over the years she's been part of the comic. Didn't she say once that if she can't have a bomb rack (as in a fighter jet), she'd at least like a bomb rack? (Anyone here with good achive-fu?) Maybe she was joking then but it wasn't the only time she made a comment that indicated some interest in an amazing rack.

So yeah, that's what I thought of when I saw this question about what would May choose...

(Hopefully this is not crossing the line given that I'm basing my guess on things May actually said in the comic. If I get some time later, I can archive dive to find the comics that support my case)

May has also commented on Faye and Marigolds "cans" in a number of other strips in ways I would count as envious.  Given any kind of choice, I'm convinced May will choose for a larger cup size.

Y'know, I doubt May will go for the jet fighter.  When you aren't flying or managing maintenance, there's nothing to do.  Odds are the pilot AI transfers their consciousness to a regular humanoid chassis when not on duty.  Staying in the aircraft when it's parked on the flight line would be like - robot jail.  May is also a poor candidate for military discipline.  She'd HATE it, and she is maturing, albeit ever so slowly.  She's going to realize it's not really for her, especially now that she has friends in the humanoid AI and meatpeople communities.  She won't want to leave that.

But, she could meet an Air Force officer AI who is a jet fighter part of their duty time and arranges a spin for her in a trainer aircraft designed for two consciousnesses.  That'd be one hellofa ride.

I'm hoping May's new chassis looks like YouTube's Naomi Wu, current revision, from the waist up... Erin Gray, ca. 1978, from the waist down... Her face, hair, and skin color are already perfect. She sounds, to me, much like Carla from "Cheers"... but younger, of course!

She's quite the looker, but she hasn't got blue skin, so I'm not sure which Naomi Wu you're referring to.

I think that, today, we got a new reason why May needs a new chassis and a reason that the authorities may find unarguable: It's potentially dangerous to those around her. As the chassis was issued to her by the Department of Corrections, they may be legally liable if Sven chooses to take legal action on  this matter.

I don't do the twit stream of consciousness or the other social media spews so I am not up on what Jeph has been doodling as a possible clue to a new character model for May.

Of course, if he *wanted* to draw a May to my specs, and post a nice full-length shot for our consideration, I would expect minimal complaints... btw Erin Gray was the spandex-stretcher from TV's "Buck Rogers". No problem finding references...!!!

Oh May, so much for not getting entangled in a relationship.

A relationship, or just Sven's legs?

Does it matter?  Given their looks in panel 3 of 4095, it's a relationship - however tenuous and perhaps ill-motivated it might be at this point.

I wanted to make a joke about May being called ‘Damson’,* but I couldn’t think of a good one. Anyways, here’s May in the same model of chassis as Melon and Lemon.

New factoid: May's leg will literally FALL OFF under certain types of... 'energetic activity.'  :-D :laugh:
