Tova had a good one recently and I realized we didn't have a thread for them.

A thread dearth, to make a phrase with a word and its anagram.

"Scorched earth" is an anagram for "Oh, sacred retch".

A variation I like is to put something together with its anagram to form a phrase.

Loathe a hotel.
Holstein in hotel.
Tide diet.
Outre route.

"Holstein in hotel" is missing an 's'. Probably should have been 'in hostel'. Maybe the German habit of pronouncing it as 'Hol-shtein' mislead you here?

(German is said to be 'pronounced as it is written' - I have my doubts on that. The German and English 's' are identical. Ditto for the 'st' - in theory: Most Germans would pronounce the 's' in 'stein' (~stone) as a 'sch' (sounds roughly like the 'sh' in names like 'Shulz'), instead of as 'ess-tee' as in 'hostel' or 'stand'. There are regional variations - it's more common in the German North to pronounce every 'st' as 'ess-tee'. Theirs is a minority position, but at the same time, Holstein is located in that very same north ...  )

I'm a bit confused about 'Holstein in hotels' , though - Holstein is a region in Germany (the bit just below Denmark) and one half of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

It's one of the smaller states of the Federation, but not small enough to fit into a hotel.

Edit: Are you referring to the breed of cows?

The cattle breed is the first thing that comes to my mind for the word "Holstein".

The region would naturally be the first thing to come to your mind, so you may prefer "Hotels in Holstein". But it's not as funny as a cow in a hotel room.

Holstein brings to mind, for me, the Schleswig-Holstein Question, of which Lord Palmerson supposedly said: “Only three people have ever really understood the Schleswig-Holstein business—the Prince Consort, who is dead—a German professor, who has gone mad—and I, who have forgotten all about it."

Incidentally "Old MP, star loner" is a suitable anagram of Lord Palmerston, the oldest man to become British Prime Minister.
