I think it just demonstrates how deeply we rely on patterns to recognise things; I had no idea that was Sven until he identified himself! I wonder how his loyal legion of fangirls are reacting to the new look?

Poor May, though! Having sex with Sven feels like it's one of the few things that she's ever experienced that was unequivocally a positive, and now her chassis had ruined that by hurting someone. Still, if nothing else, I think that May should report this intelligence to Roko. It's certainly going to help her campaign to be 're-housed' if her current chassis is not only defective, it's mildly toxic! This is turning into a public safety issue!

I'm not sure but my thoughts are definitely drifting in the direction of her liking the long hair combined with shock at the change.

My biggest worry? I... honestly think that we may be getting the first pre-shocks of history repeating itself. Faye only wanted it to be sex too, at first; that didn't stop it from developing into an emotional connection that ended up hurting her and Sven both.

I think Faye was lying to herself the whole time.  The sex didn't happen until they'd bonded over Faye accusing him of lying about his guitar, and a couple other encounters where they weren't completely hostile to each other.  Sven, too.  They were forming a friendship, and then they fucked it up with sex, and told themselves it was only sex that they wanted with each other when it wasn't.

With May, on the other hand, it really did start off as curiosity and horniness.  This would be a good chance for Sven to demonstrate his character growth by not repeating the mistakes he made with Faye.  Of course, May's probably not ready for it, but I don't think this is going to be history repeating itself.

I dunno if it means that Sven will be sticking around, but it is IMO part of the observed trend that Jeph himself prefers short hair (or hates drawing long, but more the first I think) and has been working his way through the cast to eliminate the latter.
I'm not a fan of it, myself.  I feel that it reduces the overall diversity of character design.  (I made a previous comparison to drawing everyone as circles, relying solely on size and color to differentiate them.)

I'm wondering how long it will be before May's living at Sven's place and is making elaborate rationalisations for it because of course she's not Clown Boy's girlfriend!

However, we must be on the lookout for the other shoe dropping because we all know how badly the spontaneous fling between Sven and Faye ended. Of course, Sven has come a long way since then and maybe is more able to consider others before reacting on impulse to temptation... at least temptation with someone other than May. Why would this be important? Because I do think that, her demurrals aside, this really is getting more serious for both of them than May has insisted is the case. I think it was more serious for Sven from the start, or so I see in retrospect re-reading those strips.

I still don't think that May would want 'charity'. I think that there would also be concerns from many direction that he was trying to make her his 'sex doll' or something similar. In any case, that''s missing the point because he's... er... obviously satisfied with the current level of equipment fidelity. No, I think it would be more appropriate and in-character if we had a scene of May made her own choice for herself and, if there was an element of wanting a higher-fidelity chassis, it was because she wanted to give that to Sven.

I think I can gleefully say I called this one.

Didn't think May and Sven would be a one-off.
Also think Sven may offer to get May a new body.
But this could open a very interesting avenue for personal/relationship trauma as May would then be in a body her lover helped her choose...
What if they broke up acrimoniously?  What if May's mild paranoia leads to a "He only wants to be with me because he bought the perfect body for him"? Etc etc... Could also go totally the opposite way, of course.
Sven might not offer to buy one and May get's one through Roko... But Sven could actually be attached to May's crappy old body! And find it hard to adjust to New May...

It's worth noting that Jeph is generally averse to unhappy endings for main characters although, in the case of Marten, Dora and Faye, it took about 3000 strips to get there in all their cases.

If a processor swap is as simple as it was for the one fighter when CW was demonstrating to Faye that the AIs processors aren't damaged (3008), why couldn't May keep her current body (or one Roko procures for her) for daily work and then swap into Sven's dream machine for when they're playing together?  Sven could even keep it at his place so no one needs to know besides May that it's even being used?
