Why haven't we eradicate ragweed yet? People at the turn of the 20th century dreamed of a world that had been thouroughly black-topped with nature basically only existing in parks a agricultural zones because of grass and ragweed pollen allergies.

We finally have the recipe for Roman concrete, let's please start using it on our roads.

Anyways, my complaining aside; I wonder just what Sven's 'disasterpiece' was?

EDIT: syntax, punctuation.

Summer? As a native of the open-air sauna known as the southeastern United States, I can tell you that it’s definitely the humidity.

Who needs ragweed?

Ragweed makes me want to douse fields and ditches full of it with fluorine trichloride and light a match.

Ja, that happens to some people. It makes it harder to get people to watch the earlier Extra History episodes when Dan Floyd was still doing them with the voice modulator.

A lot of that conversation pretty much sums up Sven's character. Got a lot handed to him, succeeds (relatively) easily enough and was pretty much a winner for most of his life. But for all that success, Sven's never really had to deal with rejection and failure, he's never learned the concept of "if at first you don't succeed, try and try again."

Most of Sven's character arc is deconstructing the ace, the perfect sibling. He isn't perfect, far from it. The closest relationship he had was with Faye and he done fuck'd that up, and his life has fallen apart in the wake of it. Not in a major way, but it has resulted in the fact that Sven the Casanova is gone. He's had so many one night stands that he hasn't been able to form a healthy romantic relationship.

That's crossed over into his relationship with Dora. Yeah, they've patched things up, but the core of their relationship is that Sven was the Ace, Dora the runner up. He's never understood the resentment Dora has built up, but conversely, Dora never knew the level of self-loathing Sven has. And that is shaking the foundation of their relationship. And I don't think either of them is coping with those revelations.

in Sven's defense, it seemed like he just came to get a coffee and see his sister. Sometimes I too get cranky when people want to crack into issues at a time I'm not interested in discussing them.

I like that Dora just responded just with an irritated look. It seems like the appropriate level of response to him being curt with her. This might actually end up as a positive growth for their relationship for both of them.

They’re talking about his music, but we all know that the conversation is really about his relationships.

I'm actually not so sure. On the surface, yes, this could be a metaphor for Sven and May: If he really wants to do something different, should he have the determination to follow it up and damn the public image or should he wonder if the trouble it will cause him outweighs what few benefits seem to be on offer? For a public figure, that can be a very real and difficult equation to solve. Remember, they aren't in a relationship yet and May has blown quite cold on the subject, so there isn't even anything to fight for, just yet.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if this is mildly autobiographical for Jeph. He's experimented with new genres in his time and, as is always the case, they don't always succeed. Maybe this isn't metaphorical at all but, rather, Jeph remarking on how difficult it is to do new stuff and the emotional issues that can strike home when dealing with the reception for that work.

This got rather interesting pretty quickly,  Sven's bad reaction to Dora's observation seems to indicate that she's come fairly close to the truth!

Then again, his observation is pretty self-aware.

I look forward to seeing where this goes!

I wasn't saying it was a metaphor for Sven and May specifically. More for the way he approaches relationships generally.

I also wasn't saying it was a metaphor. The two situations are fundamentally the same. His unwillingness to commit to an artistic path and his unwillingness to let himself be vulnerable in a relationship both stem from his unwillingness to move out of his comfort zone and take risks.

He's too comfortable, both artistically and personally.

Dora, Dora, Dora, people hate having their shortcomings shouted out at them in the midst of a conversation, especially when they're feeling vulnerable.

The angle you were looking for was: "I'd still like to hear your passion project, even if no one else seemed to like it."

Best case, you can build up his confidence by reacting positively, and your point is made without coming across like a tactless jerk.

At worst, Sven was right and it's terrible enough to want to burn down the walls that yet reverberate with its sound.  Better go find an abandoned building somewhere, just to be safe.

Actually one of the worst things about summer in the US is related to climate control policies.

Everybody wearing shorts/shirts/generally little clothing, you enter public transportation or any office and you're freezing your ass off.

Actually the reverse is also bad in winter, but at least then you can take off your wintercoat and scarf...

My feelings are exactly the opposite. I'm winter you can always put on more clothes if you are cold. In summer, there's only so many you can take off, if you are still hit after that you are boned.

I feel like there’s a slight difference between rejection and having the first work you put your heart into burned in a ritual fire. Rejection can wear you down, but the fire would incinerate your desire to keep going.

An old CD surfaced in the car, prompting me to ask if any of Sven's songs were purchased by Ween?  Particularly the "12 Golden Country Greats", album.  Tracks such as "Help Me Scrape the Mucus off My Brain" and "Piss Up a Rope"?

All true, but the way she said it is pretty realistic for the way siblings with a dysfunctional relationship would act. Even if they were trying to mend fences.

The worst part of summer for me is the heat, which this useless body doesn't tolerate well. Also, my migraines get much worse during the summer (not sure why, possibly the heat?).

As for the comic, I feel like I need to steal the fourth panel. So many of my dumb silly writing or gaming ideas started out that way...

The lesson? Be wary of giving creative personalities weird ideas. "Just weird enough to be worth trying" is a thing and, as in this case, can lead to totally unforeseen consequences!

And the circle of the Sven/Dora sibling relationship continues as it always does.

I don't know; it seems healthy enough, given their background of antagonism. Apologies given and accepted without external badgering is always a positive!

At the Northampton Fire Station, the firefighter says into the phone: "Yes, Ma'am. I see. Thank you." He hangs up the phone and stares thoughtfully off into the distance.
Slowly he turns to face his colleagues.
"She is back," he says.

In all honesty, I can't exactly blame Hannelore for having a panic attack. I mean, yes, she's always had this tendency to assume there is something going wrong when confronted with weirdness. That said, 'jnvisible emu' is pretty extreme, even for Northampton and, whilst she's taking it to eleven, it's certainly reason to question whether or not Winslow is entirely okay!

I wonder if dealing with the reality (or not) of the invisible emu is as far as the Northampton Update has got. If so, it might be interesting to learn Hannelore's reaction to Sven's latest sexcapade, which seems to be quite a hot topic amongst the 'younger' AIs in the cast.

Maybe she'll snap out of this if Winslow tells her he met a girl.

I'm not sure if a girl emu counts although if she is a Good Bird, it's always nice to make a new friend.

Hanners did fly into a party near Northampton on an Invisible Ship. So she is well aware of the stealth technology. Hannelore should notify the test facility the Invisible Ship came from about the stealth device small enough for a very large bird.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure that the invisible 'plane was something ECI were developing for X-Com or a similar organisation - an invisible suborbital drop-ship. It's kind of what I'm hoping is one of the body options available to May in the long term. Mostly because I'd love to see her fly up to orbit and see the stars from just a little closer.

Might want to hard disconnect the laser cannon and Stingray missile pack from the power and control grid first though.

Fun fact: Today (in QC-time) started with strip 4061, when Winslow wakes up, wonders what to do with the day and decides to watch pidgeons. Now we are at strip 4103.
That‘s 43 strips engulfing one single day. More than eight weeks in real time. Maybe that‘s a record? Can anyone think of a single day that has been covered by more strips? Maybe the summer party at Emily‘s parents house?

Maybe she'll snap out of this if Winslow tells her he met a girl.

I'm not sure if a girl emu counts although if she is a Good Bird, it's always nice to make a new friend.
Are you forgetting when Winslow fell in love at first sight with Roko?

Hanners did fly into a party near Northampton on an Invisible Ship. So she is well aware of the stealth technology. Hannelore should notify the test facility the Invisible Ship came from about the stealth device small enough for a very large bird.

Maybe the Emu cloak is a side project of Hanner's dad?  I wouldn't think he'd keep her that up to date about his doings.

That is indeed quite some strips. The summer party day started at comic 2291 and that day ended with 2327, so 36 strips.

At the Northampton Fire Station, the firefighter says into the phone: "Yes, Ma'am. I see. Thank you." He hangs up the phone and stares thoughtfully off into the distance.
Slowly he turns to face his colleagues.
"She is back," he says.

I'm sure they have her number on caller ID from previous "rescue" calls and other incidents

I think Jeph’s comment at the bottom of the strip is important and we should all respect his wishes in this matter.

The really weird part of this conversation is how Bubbles isn't really participating in it at all beyond these weird 'I want/I could' interpositions. It's almost as if she wants to boast in front of Faye and Winslow for some reason. Is she getting bored? Does she want to test her superior combat-optimised chassis against something?

For some reason, I can see Bubbles in camouflage, stalking a deer through the Massachusetts woods, having promised herself that she'll Nerf one of those critters right between the eyes.

Bubbles is worse than the others, but I get the "everyone is having their own little private conversation, even though they're technically listening to each other, and what each person says is connected to the general topic" vibe from everyone, not just her.

EDIT: I reread the strip, and my perception is very much wrong. The conversation actually flows logically from point A to point B to point C, and Bubbles is still on her own thing. Maybe I get the feeling the entirety of the convo is disjointed because what's specifically in focus keeps changing so fast, and that's something I'm generally poorly equipped to handle. In real-life conversations, I tend to be the Bubbles, and that's something I'm mildly ashamed of.
