Steve decides to try out the boat before getting rid of it - while out on the water, Steve crosses paths with Tortura again, in the middle of one of her missions -  lots of action, gunfire and explosions - boat goes up in a titanic fireball - Steve and Tortura miraculously survive, washed up on the shore - another fond farewell and Steve hitchhikes home...

Cosette: "Well? Did you dispose of the boat?"
Steve: "Yyyeah, in a manner of speaking..."

Or, five years later, a dumbfounded Marten is looking at the homepage of Popular Archeology Online. The headline pic is Steve (carrying an assault rifle), and Cossette (toting two automatic pistols and with a brown-haired baby in a sling), posing with several open treasure chests with gold and jewels spilling out onto the dock pier. The Boat is moored behind them with Tortura standing at the helm position. The headline reads: "Blackbeard's Treasure Found! - SC Adventures Inc. Do It Again!"

"It's nice to see Steve and Cosette have found their calling in life!" Claire remarks as she walks past him.

I thought maybe Lonely Island was the name of the boat.

Lonely Island was a comedy group on Saturday Night Live that also did comedy songs. Most relevant at this time:

he couldn't afford the boat that he has just drunk-bought!
Affording to *buy* boats is not hard. Go and look at the lower end of your local classifieds and you'll be amazed at how cheap they are: just right for a drunk buy. The cost of ownership on the other hand, renting a place to store/park it, annual maintenance, can be truly horrendous, and is much the same for your 500 dollar drunk buy as it is for the brand new $50,000 deluxe-o-craft. Which is why there are drunk buys available for $500.

From Cossette's reaction, 'affordable' wasn't part of this transaction. Neither were 'reasonable hire purchase terms'.

There is also the stereotypical significant-other's reaction to the purchase of a boat: "You're going to be spending more time with (your drunk buddies on) that thing than you will with me!" I've seen boats (more often cars, but also the occasional airplane) wreck plenty of relationships.

When I first read this strip, I had some real problems with believing in drunk-buying a boat. I'm OK with jet-propelled Roombas, but somehow that's a dividing line for me. I've always thought of boats as super expensive, and the process of buying one roughly on par with buying a car.

Then I remembered you can buy cars on eBay now, which means drunk buying a car is definitely possible. So I looked it up, and sure enough, eBay sells boats. More, a lot of them are fairly inexpensive. Though I expect that when you're buying a 25' Chris Craft for $500 - a boat I gather runs $100k new - you can expect about the same results as buying a Porsche for $500. You're lucky if it runs and it can stay afloat.

(EDIT: I expect $500 Porsches don't stay afloat).

I think it still tracks, since you can still end up underwater (financially) with the car if it's a total lemon.

Also thought Lonely Island to be the name of the boat. If itçs just an SNL reference, then I'd lime to suggest 'Regret and Moderation'.

Also from two families that struggle with alcohol. My parents weren't alcoholics, but multiple uncles and cousins have known the struggle.
Thankfully, I don't like being drunk and I'm very picky about my alcohol, so I don't drink much.

There are two senses of "affordable," that you have the money to spend, or that there won't be long-term consequences for spending it.  The price of a low-end boat is just enough to walk the line, especially for a low-grade civil servant.

OK hear me out:

I'm hoping that they scrap Marten as "best mate" and have him walk her down the aisle with Claire going as "best mate" to keep it traditional yet untraditional. Dora will likely have Sven walking her down the aisle, and if their friendship endured then she'll have Faye as her "best mate" as well.

So why not give Claire some spotlight as she's more into it than Marten and he's been like a father-figure to her earning the right

But if their actual fathers are involved in some way, then toss that out the window...

The "best mate" and the father are two different roles.  Marten's job is to get drunk and give a speech, and if they're not too put off by the overtones of coverture, both brides' fathers - parents, even - might give them away.  (I don't know, does Tai get along with her parents?  To be in a private grad school, I'd imagine she does.)

During Dora & Tai's first date Tai said her parents "have always been super supportive" (regarding her sexuality).  The wording suggests they're still living, but I don't recall any other info.

Different circumstances-- if Marten says, "read this, I can't" it's entirely different than her surfing through his browsing history just because

Main difference being that Dora went ahead and snooped on her own initiative despite Marten clearly not wanting her to. Though Claire has demonstrated similar ... initiative ... in breaching boundaries, we've also seen a greater level of trust between Marten and Claire than  we saw between Marten and Dora (who seems to have done some growing-up of her own since the breakup.)
Still bugs me, though -- I got it drilled into my head years ago that answering someone else's cellphone was seen as kind of squicky; they're "personal property" in the way that the phone growing out of the wall wasn't, quite. (I'm thinking of the time when a co-worker went home for the night, leaving her cellphone on her desk, and then her mother called. I was one desk over and answered ("Hello, this is (DSL), answering Maribeth's phone!") and I could almost feel the Mom's hackles go up on the other end of the connection. Letting Maribeth know her phone was at work since she had no landline (a pioneering move in those days) was its own comedy of errors.

Also, Marten’s right there and (presumably) gave his permission. The real problem with Dora was that she went and looked even after Marten asked her not to.

I certainly don't and even more of a reason why I use a phone with a fingerprint lock.

Well, yes, others do.

My partner has access to my phone for such occasions, at least when she manages to remember the PIN - it's useful from time to time, such as when I'm driving and need her to answer a call. And from the look of it, Marten does as well.

You've apparently concluded that Marten doesn't on the basis that he was angry at Dora for looking through his porn collection against his explicit wishes.

Call me crazy, but that's a leap. And I daresay it's a leap you've made because you're predisposed against her.

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

And there's another.

Edit: I forgot to mention that, yes, I have access to her phone as well. Not that I generally have cause to use it. I think she's asked me to answer her phone maybe once or twice.

You're the one who is making a leap, Tova because in no way have I mentioned Marten or Dora. So don't put words in my mouth!

I just don't let people use my phone because I do my banking on there, I pay bills, pay for groceries, book for travel and probably a half dozen things in my day to day life. Think about how much you use your phone now and how easy it can be for someone to get at that information. I do it because its my job to fucking pay attention to that.

I can't use the banking on my phone without a separate login; same for my password safe.  Merely having access to my phone wouldn't give anyone access to those.  I answer my wife's phone if she's not able to, just as I answer the landline - which is also usually calling her.

My wife knows my phone's password, and I know my wife's phone PIN (haven't gotten her to switch to a passphrase). I honestly don't care what she looks at on the phone, if she were to look. Usually it goes the other way, though, where she hands me the phone to do something technical like pairing it with her bike GPS (which was incidentally not straightforward like you'd expect).

I do have sensitive stuff on the phone, like banking apps and a password manager, but both are password locked. Even so I wouldn't hand off my phone to a stranger, just on principle.

Nah, I like Claire, mostly. If anything, I am arguing that Marten did wrong here.

First of, I don't care about the online banking stuff for the reasons mentioned. I am on about messages in particular.
I find letting people look through your messages/have access to your phone an icky thing for two reasons in this situation:

a) It is unclear to me if Marten allowed Claire to access his phone or if he just doesn't have a pass code set and she is using it willy-nilly (in that regard, my original reply could have been better worded). If that is so, that's really not kosher of Claire, and negligent of Marten.

b) If he agreed to it without reading the message, I consider that betraying the trust of whoever sent it. It is somewhat different if he read it first and then went "ugh, my head, you go reply to that", although there is still no reason why Claire would have to use his phone for that - I assume they all have each other's phone numbers by now.
If I was in the sender's shoes and received such a text from someone else than the intended recipient, the least it would trigger would be a discussion along the lines of "does your partner read all the messages I send to you?" Making people wonder that is really not kind, although it can be forgiven (particularly if Marten is not thinking straight due to hangover).

Needless to say, I don't even give my partners access to my phone, and I feel icky when I have to use my girlfriend's phone, because sometimes notifications and partial messages pop up while I am using it, and I would really rather not read those.

Okay. That is not what I was expecting. The "yet he fought with Dora over her snooping through his computer" thing seems to have been a total red herring, so I'll just forget about it.

In these kinds of scenarios, I am always guided by the reactions of the characters.

Dora didn't even blink. They are all close enough friends that I would conclude that each of them was comfortable with it, and was confident the others would be.

TLDR If none of them is bothered, neither am I.

It's always worth thinking about consent issues, though.

Marten may have said yes but we didn't see that happen. On the other hand, doesn't everyone have a passcode these days? So for Claire to use the phone Marten likely authorized her.

It's less personal than a porn collection, but still personal, to be on a screen that shows somebody's text history.

Ah yes, just what we do best here, overanalysis!

It's true that we didn't see Marten consent.

If we see Marten remotely bothered about it in a future comic, then I'll eat my words. And my hat.
