fusion music fun
« on: 26 Feb 2020, 03:26 »

Saw that there wasn't really a thread dedicated to musical fusions (closest I saw was for jazz), so figured 'why not ?'

Post your favorite musical fusions. Funky blues, progressive rockabilly, punk ska, techno flamenco, chiptune gospel, electro-swing, vaudeville big band ragtime -- it's all accepted here. And, yes, I can provide examples for all of those.

Feel free to also suggest music fusions, as well.

[Sidebar: I was originally going to make this a poll. But then I had a Beepatrice moment and decided I didn't want to spend 10+ minutes listing a bunch of genres which would have ultimately culminated in a very long list.]
EDIT: typo fix

Just in case anyone doubted my ability to provide samples, here's some chiptune gospel.

Classical pipa (琵琶) meets Western rock. The piece is《十面埋伏》or "Ambush from all Sides", a very famous pipa solo commemorating the historical Battle of Gaixia, which lead to the establishment of the Han Dynasty, essentially the "foundational" dynasty of Imperial China, and the reason we call ourselves the Han* people to this day.
*Of course not everyone in China is Han, but regrettably Han chauvinism tends to ignore that... But so do outsiders when they speak of the "ethnic Chinese".

This is a really good piece!

Trying to match Akima's take of a traditional ethnic instrument used to perform a modern piece. The best I could find right away was this
kantele player joining forces with a cellist.

I concede that the drummer in Akima's video is way more convincing than this cellist as supporting cast :-D.

The lady is making a living teaching youngsters to play (modern) kantele, so I guess there are enough people interested in learning the art. Most of us associate kantele with folkloristic music from the era when the Finns didn't know whether they want to advance from the bronze age to the iron age.

I think here her kantele sound is closer to  the "traditional".

Don't worry, it's only music. The visual component of the video is a stock loop that plays for most of the songs on that channel.

It amuses me to put this into the fusion thread. The things that cross my YouTube recommends ...

Chiptune exotica w/ pipe organ.
It really picks up and becomes one of my favorite remixes of this theme at 26 seconds.
