Hurray, Claire passed her exams!

Here's hoping Pintsize  just has the confetti cannon loaded with something innocuous.

EDIT: In regards to the poll, I had to figure out which to use for my new character in my Saterday campaign would say.

I wonder if Martin, Claire, Faye, and Bubbles [and possibly Pintsize] will meet Clinton at the Horrible Revelation for a celebration or if they'll celebrate at the apartment?

EDIT: typo fix

To be fair, anything fired fast enough is going to punch through ballistic gel.

Pintsize tests his pranks for safety before unleashing them on unsuspecting humans!
Aww, he cares  :-D

I put an "Other" in the poll:

Today's strip is quite simple really: It reminds us that Pintsize's stunts are nowhere near as spontaneous as they seem. He spends time, effort and resources planning them out and making sure harm is controlled and limited. So, this is more or less how a synthetic class clown plies their trade!

I imagine that makes it kind of hard to stay mad at him... I mean, he did all that work to make sure you wouldn't get hurt no matter HOW obnoxious his prank is...

One of my answers was "other" because silence from me is not necessarily awkward.

Maybe this has been answered before, but where does Pintsize stow all this stuff?  Bubbles may not need much closet space, but three humans, two of which are female, likely do.

I'm pretty sure the lubricant won't cause any wounds. Cover the targets in greasy stuff, yeah, but that's probably a feature as far as Pintsize is concerned.

I'm having a bit of a hard time with the sudden revelation that Dora took highly technical classes in college and found them easy.

"Computational linguistics" sounds like it's a sub-field of AI programming. Or at the very least, programming. You'd think that if Dora had a skillset like that, she'd be working in that field, and not in a coffee shop. Even as the owner of a coffee shop.

I don't mean to downplay the difficulties of running a small business, but the day to day tasks just don't present the sort of abstract mental challenge that you get as a programmer. Yeah, there's a lot of grunt work in programming, but it's still a lot more stimulating than standing behind the bar, filling orders or waiting for someone to come in.

It's just kind of disconcerting and out of sync with what we know about Dora.

Though come to think of it, I'm not sure how you raise the capital to by a coffee shop at a twenty-something. Unless you're Hanners and have super-rich parents, which I'm pretty sure isn't the source of Dora's funds. I don't think I ever scraped together more than $15k in my twenties, and that's not nearly enough.

EDIT: I looked at Dora's page in the Wiki, and yeah, this strip is WILDLY inconsistent with what little she's said about her experiences in school before.

Such as:

https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1107

"He [Sven] cruised through high school and college, he never studied and still got perfect grades. Meanwhile I'm busting my ass to make Cs and Ds. Then AFTER school he writes a couple of stupid songs and the paychecks just come rolling in. Meanwhile I can barely afford to pay myself a living wage."

In my defense, both Dora and Emily are now sporting a sort of bobbed ponytail now. Which wasn't an overlap until recently.

Yeah, I still get confused with the changing appearances of Dora et al.

The clue to Emily's identity was in the fact that she started discussing computational linguistics, though. So, you were right... up to a point. 8-)

I tend to associate Emily with really deeply weird, out of touch with reality comments, not the technical stuff. Yeah, there have been strips emphasizing that she's exceptionally gifted in some highly technical fields, but mostly it's things like aspiring to be a toaster. Her conversation was so... normal that I didn't recognize her, and the only other person with black hair and that hairstyle is Dora.

Emily used to be drawn as somewhat vaguely Asiatic, and I'm not really seeing that in the current strip.

Faye and Steve are not remotely recognizable in those early strips. Martin is, though.

Pintsize doesn't count since he's still awfully simple in appearance even today. It's not apparent how he does anything since his limbs are blobs.

And yes, I do remember the "Pintsize gets fingers" strips.

For me it was the smaller ear piercing, clothes choice, and she's taller.

Somehow, it's in character for Emily to buy a niche technological toy/musical instrument for Claire. For anyone else, one would assume it's some kind of ironic prank but, with Emily, you know it's 100% sincere and the result of thought-processes no-one else could hope to follow!

I'm pretty sure that Emily's small-talk with Melon. Don't ask me why; it just feels right. Analysis of Melon's response patterns may have even turned Emily's MSc into an MSc (hons)!

The best (and sometimes only) way to differentiate Emily and Dora is the shape of their eyes; I've got close to perfect first-glance recognition of her that way. That aside, Emily's clothes tend to be from a lighter and more 'summer' colour palette too.

I had no idea what a Theremin was, hence that didn’t register. The only electronic instrument I knew by name was the Moog.

That Dora comparison chart is interesting. I’ve read the strips, of course, but it’s different to see them side by side. I almost feel like she’s regressed since strip 1653, become more cartoonish.

There's something else that bothers me in today's strip - Emily seems shorter than normal.  Maybe this is why some are confusing her with Dora.

I've come close to confusing her a couple times.  Back when Emily was introduced, she had much more distinctively almond-shaped eyes:
https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2329
She's definitely drifted closer to Dora in the last couple years.

From the same era, Dora and Emily in the same panel:

https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2304

Not difficult at all to tell apart, back then. Hair and eyes primarily. Height too, but height's not always obvious in a comic. Unless we're talking at the ends of the curve, like Claire or Elliot.

Also, in looking back a bit from that strip to get context, I fell down a rabbit hole of revisiting old strips. I don't know if that happens to anyone else.

[Snip]

Fun fact; electronic instruments have been around since the 1800s! The singing-arc lamp is from 1899 and came about from William Duddell being tasked with trying to figure out how to stop the constant sounds carbon arc lamps produced[1]! I did a research paper on the history of electronic music for Music Appreciation back in college. Really wish I could find it since I'm having trouble trying to find the name of the instrument that used telegraph cables to make music.

[1] Carbon-arc lamps were widely used in place of the old lantern street lights even after the invention of the Swann-Edison lightbulb. The sound was described as a constant humming, hissing, or shrieking.

From the same era, Dora and Emily in the same panel:

Not difficult at all to tell apart, back then. Hair and eyes primarily. Height too, but height's not always obvious in a comic. Unless we're talking at the ends of the curve, like Claire or Elliot.

Also, in looking back a bit from that strip to get context, I fell down a rabbit hole of revisiting old strips. I don't know if that happens to anyone else.

No. It did not. Uh-huh. Nope.

wait where did that come from

Okay, so looking at all of these next to each other, I can definitely see where the Emily/Dora confusion came from.

Man, the time you're putting into assembling supporting images for Internet forum posts. I wish I could not relate do that.

So, were Theremins on sale and everyone is having a hard time what is a suitable gift for someone who has just received heir Masters Degree in Library Science? Maybe Claire will have an angst attack to Marten about how she's never really had a clear hobby before and tries to find one?

Or, this is a Chekhov's Gadget moment? They set up the three Theremins on a table in a triangle and turn them on at the same time (Emily is hiding in the office, babbling: "No, no, no, it can't happen again!"). Espressosaurus appears. Okay, let's try again. This time, they set it up in a clear space on the floor and Raven tumbles out. She looks up. "Guys? Is that you? Oh wow! It worked! Nobel Prize come to mama!"

You would think Claire's own brother would have some kind of clue of what to get her.  Emily is being Emily.  Hannelore, I can't explain in any way, shape, or form...unless she thinks Deathmole could use another member.

And Claire has a hobby.  Meddling.

Hah, Clinton, a clue?
Maybe, if he thought about it real hard. But for a random “yay I passed” party he only just heard about? There was probably a store with them on sale on his way there.
Emily on the other hand probably bought it months ago just for this occasion, based on a conversation they had off-screen while interning at the library together.

Sure it wasn't Theramins-R-Us?  They are a nationwide chain, with stores in every large city.
