Since the recent comics have been about robot anatomy, I was just wondering something about the seams that AIs have, e.g. the line between the head and the rest of the body. Initially I thought that they were supposed to be kind of like a doll in terms of anatomy and that there were seams between each moving part, but it seems like they mostly have a fairly fluid range of movement similar to a human and that they don't have visible seams between most of their moving parts. So is the seam between the head and the body there just for convenient access to the head, i.e. so that they can easily remove it for maintenance?

I'd assume so. The head is where the substrate is typically located (we saw that while Faye was working at the fighting ring), so I figure that area requires more maintenance than other parts of the body. Then again, some of the older/cheaper models have more seams (May used to have them on her hands, and Momo appears to have had a few hidden ones). I figure as dermal and myomer technology became more advanced, the need for them became less and less.

The neck seam, specifically, is also an emergency coolant vent on several models, so it might never go away.

Humans do have orifaces for venting gases, no neck seam required.  And May did insist on the standard human hole configuration for her new chassis, but still has it.

About The Seams of Momo...

Momo's new body started out without a neck seam, even though most other AIs have them, even ones in the same shop with "human-like" dermal colors.

All the humanoid chassis in the Idoru shop have human-like skin coloring, with varying degrees of seamlessness (Seam-ness? Seamitude?).

OBVIOUSLY, we're just seeing an author and artist refine his world and characters and how he represents them, so there's little point to reading much into all this. It's just really interesting to see the evolution.
