Hmm.  I sent someone pics of people who are named Dick.  I must have been doing it wrong.

"... and this post constitutes the last coherent, legible utterance on the - at the times - obscure webforum now identified at the epicentre of the global catastrophe variously dubbed 'The Great Silly', 'TILT!' or 'Babbel 2021' that has disrupted, fractured and balkanized the Internet as we knew it before February 17th, 2021.

Report of the 2035 Special Investigative Congressional Committee into the events of February 17th, 2021."

I wouldn't mind seeing this happen ( I can think of any number of worse fates for the Internet!  :-P )
Just think - I could say, "I was there - when  everyone on that forum donned a funny hat, blew party squeakers and shared the silly jokes that spread and infected the entire Internet..."

my time on the INTERNET has taught me that the only acceptable Dick pics are those of the hero formerly known as Nightwing.  (And before that, Robin.)
particularly well-regarded, in some circles, are those which feature the famous, nay, legendary "Dick butt".

Presumably Iris and Yemisi would be used to her using other people's phones to call them by now. So Clinton isn't in THAT much trouble.

I meant more in terms of how agitated she was. I've got assorted bits of speculation to varying degrees of wildness. But, we don't know much about the nature of their relationship, so it's anyone's guess. And I for one, don't want to potentially spoil whatever Jeph has planned.

[I sometimes fear I may have done so in the past. RIP any story threads I accidentally nuked.]

Surely not? I distinctly remember, when Jeph came to Australia waaaay back in 2012 (fun fact: that's where my avatar comes from!), someone asked him if Hannelore would ever actually go to space, and he drew considerable awe from the crowd when he revealed that actually, that was about to be the very next story arc. And indeed it was.

So I wouldn't imagine that you're nuking any story arcs by pre-empting them.

I miss winter when it's summer, since I don't handle the heat well. As long as the temperature doesn't get above 24 °C, I'm fine.

Then again, summer here in NZ is drawing to a close, and it has been flippin' cold in Canterbury. We've had the heating on more than once.

I'd strongly suggest avoiding the Phoenix, Arizona area between like May 1 and October 1, then.

Average daily high is right around 38°C. And we routinely get days over 40°C.

To return to the comic:

I've never really understood what straight women and gay men find appealing about diiiiiicks. I know Clinton is probably thinking "way to ruin the mood by being crass," but I tend to filter that as "ugh, I'm going to be on the receiving end of a dick, gross." I feel like I'm un-deservedly lucky that women want anything to do with my male body.

I'm not sure it's a thing I'd be able to put into words either, but as a fan of all sex organs I'm not sure I could in any case.

... but I tend to filter that as "ugh, I'm going to be on the receiving end of a dick, gross." I feel like I'm un-deservedly lucky that women want anything to do with my male body.

I mean, if anything this just means (to me, anyway) you're super straight, lmao.

Penises are weird, but so are vulvas! So *big shrug* we're all weird!!! And in a way that means none of us are. #SyndromeWasRight

This is some top-level posting, welcome new(ish) person!

I've never felt the urge to send a dick pic.  I've sent a couple that were requested, but never have I thought, "Oh, this woman I don't know and will 99% likely never meet in person swiped right on me as well, she obviously wants to see my junk!".  It's not even something I had to be told not to do--when I first learned it was a thing, I had to stop and ask myself, are there really guys who are that stupid out there?  Over the years, it turns out that yes, there are, and there are far too many of them, going by the numerous times it comes up.

It's something I have never fathomed about other men. Sending unsolicited dick pics. I don't think I've met a single woman in my entire life who you could send, unsolicited, a dick pic, and them think to themselves 'yeah I need that shit in my life' and reply happily to arrange a meeting. Results do seem to vary. But then hey evidently people who do it are more likely to be sexist narcissists.

I wonder how common it is for cis men to send unsolicited/unwanted dick pics to people who aren't women. I know it happens, from personal experience and from friends; I just wonder how the rates compare.

I have one friend who, when they receive a random dick pic on a dating app or whatever, will try to explain to the person why they shouldn't do that and try to get them to apologize. I just go with the "block user" option myself.

Has it been determined that AIs can remove limbs for work duties? I can see them doing that with an arm for a leafblower, broom, or rake easily. Maybe doing so with legs when on a riding mower or acting as a chauffeur(think "Johnny Cab" in Total Recall).

We've been getting quite the opposite end of things for the past two weeks here, in Kansas. I know it's our winter to your summer, but it's been ridiculous these past few weeks.

The polar vortex/cold wave/whatever it's being called now came with windchills as low as -36°C (-32°F). This Monday's high was -18°C (-2°F).

EDIT: bolding for emphasis

That's true. It's probably why Iris still hangs out with these two.

On the other hand, for others, "relentless" is anxiety-inducing and suffocating. I wouldn't be able to be friends with Willow, I don't think. I value my space too much; her inviting herself into my space like she's done here with Clinton would have just shut me down and I'd have just been waiting until she left.

My first couple of paying jobs were arranged by someone else. Didn't interview for either of them.

The first time I applied for a job on my own, I did get rejected. This was after I had been paid for to do some database work, so it was not my first job, just the first permanent, non-contract job I applied for myself. I can still remember it now, some 35-ish years later, so yeah, it's a milestone and memorable.

To be honest, I wasn't remotely qualified to do that job. As I recall, I didn't even know the programming language involved.

People at various times have posted data about their job searches on r/dataisbeautiful.  Each graph looks largely the same: 500+ apps sent out, 400+ no-replys, 100 replies, 80 ghosts, 20 first phone interviews, four second phone interviews, three in-person first round interviews, one second-round interview, one job offer.  Job hunting for anything that isn't menial labor is time intensive and incredibly draining.  Having a network or someone inside a company who can vouch/advocate for you makes the process so much easier (how I got my current job over six other possible applicants).  Each rejection or lack of reply sucks, and the automated emails make it even more dehumanizing, especially when you get your 234819th pitch of "You're the ideal person for this sales position!"--seriously, you hold a sales job for even a month or two, even if you sucked at it, and other sales job openings will find you and spam you about sales jobs for years afterwards. Make it stop!!1!

Recruiters are largely useless as well, unless you pay a premium for one, and not everyone has that luxury.  Gotta ping them almost daily to stay on their relevance list, and even then, they still suck at placing you.  And for as much as they say to not shotgun your resume out there, you pretty much have to, even when you tailor it specifically for each job, because unless you're a senior position or in a hot field, you need volume just to force the door open.  To say nothing of the current market with 10million+ people looking for jobs...

Awww, poor Claire. She's right though: the first rejection IS a milestone. As long as she thinks of it as practice, she'll be good.

She’s also pretty lucky.  My applications just seem to end up in a memory-hole.

Same. I applied for at least 40 jobs coming out of undergrad and interviewed for 12. I got all of three rejection notifications (but two offers, and that's what was important). One place that I interviewed and impressed one of the vice presidents couldn't even be assed to look up the status of my application when I called them a few weeks after they said they would notify me (and this wasn't some shady, fly-by-night operation, they're one of the companies vying to build the next lunar lander).

And now they're asking for multiple years of experience for even entry level jobs.

My experience wasn't nearly that bad. It was draining, but I never had an application memory-holed. I always got callbacks at least.

Some of those callbacks were kind of absurd, though. The one that sticks with me was when I was working at Interplay, and I applied to Blizzard. The guy on the other end of the phone started asking about my GPA in high school. At that point, high school was 15 years behind me, and I had 11 years of experience as a professional programmer, and 3 years as a game AI programmer. Asking about my high school GPA was dumb.

No surprise, that's one application that went nowhere.

Mine was. The vast majority of my applications got no response. And when you spend your days sending countless applications into what seems to be a black hole, finally getting an actual rejection feels like a huge step forward.

Even if it reminds you of just how much work you'll need to do before getting an actual interview. And how many of those you'll probably have to do before getting an actual offer.

Small number of qualified applicants, even smaller number of people who could be hired for it due to experience, so I'm guessing she was one of if not the final applicant compared with a lot of other "don't call us, we'll call you" applicants.

But the gut feeling in me from too many experiences with local politics and government-run places like the library is that someone had the job posted online only because the law required it and actually the position was filled without looking at anyone. But that's just my gut, Jephh probably never saw how the locals really work behind the scenes :(

All I can say, Claire, is that I've been there too often. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that you eventually develop an exposure immunity to it! Marten, follow her and give her a hug. I suspect that she really needs just your presence, not any words.

Well, that was a week... no an arc of nothing really happening I guess. Something that could have been resolved in three strips got expanded to ten to introduce... someone whose role in the strip probably is now as developed as it will ever be.

I wish I had received rejection notifications for everything, and in a timely fashion. Once, I got a rejection email several months later...

Also, let's hope Hadley Regional Library has done their due dilligence before rejecting Claire...

CHIX NIX DIX PIX

I Googled that after coming up with it and someone had beaten me to it.

Turns out this is not an occasional problem, and has actually prompted an attempt at legislation: https://theslot.jezebel.com/male-senators-shot-down-a-virginia-bill-that-would-have-1846303727

A friend of mine got called in for an interview on a job he had applied to 9 months earlier out of the blue.

It's like some places don't look at the date on submitted applications. NASA called me to ask if I was still interested a year and a half after I applied (and it wasn't even for the position I had applied for, nor one I had any interest in).

Sometimes, companies will hire someone after a long recruitment process but that person will turn out to be unsuitable and get the boot a couple of months in. Or, the new hire will get a better offer somewhere else and decide to quit.

Even if the hire is successful, they might decide to open another position with the same job description because they are getting busier. Or open an entirely new position that might suit people they previously overlooked.

Whichever, the first thing the recruiters will do will be to fish through their shortlist of applications and see if any of them are suitable and still available for an interview.

That's why you shouldn't be too disheartened even by ignored applications. They never get thrown away (well, not the ones that make it past the initial cull), and you might turn out to be a perfect applicant for that position or another one months down the line.

My current position was the result of four applications at that company. Two yielded no response, the third resulted in a near-miss interview, and I finally landed the fourth.

(Edited for clarity)

In this case, that was sorta average at the University where he ended up working.  Perfect timing too, since he and his gf were at the ramen, rice, and beans level.

I can beat that. Last week I got a rejection email to a job I applied to 3.5 years ago.
