WCDT July 12th - July 16th (4566-4570)
« on: 11 Jul 2021, 18:18 »

Comic's up. No poll yet, may add one later. Feel free to beat me to it.

Meanwhile, Hercules is napping in a corner, wondering why the humans are yelling at each other.

EDIT: woops, no he isn't. Completely missed him in that first panel.

some thoughts i put somewhere else, and i guess i'll put them here, too

Quote from: me
it's dumb how happy i am that jeph finally actually went here

i don't mean to damn him with faint praise, i promise. i figured we would eventually get something like this, once he began branching out more years ago. but to actually have even this permutation? yes, oh yes ^_^

look, i remember a decade... god, more even, ago, when i first started reading. and i had hopes.

and as time has passed, his work has met and even surpassed my hopes, the vast majority of the time.

this was one of them. all those years ago. and now it's here, like the sun

and it's a small stupid thing that doesn't mean anything! it's not as important as all that

and yet

thanks, jeph

It is extremely possible to be a top and do this. Topping just gives you a role you can lean into to make sure everything's fine and hyperfocus on making sure of it if you can't turn your brain off, at least making it work for you. And then afterglow, you lose the outlet the role was giving you in the moment, and this happens.

I mean, Elliot definitely isn't. Look at him. I'm just saying in theory.

I wouldn't have thought that Clinton would have the healthier attitude.  Yet here he is trying to console Elliot.

I would, actually.

Throughout the comic, Clinton generally has expressed very healthy attitudes towards relationships, friendships, and sex. More importantly even, he has consistently shown openness to other people's advice and interpretations and/or fluidity in his own feelings. Note that this does not mean he is flawless, his insecurities/inexperience definitely hampered him in his interactions with Emily and especially his response to her simply stating she didn't have time for dating. But, overall I'd consider his attitudes quite healthy

Yes, yes, I am a bit of a fan of Clinton

I would even say: second guessing happiness is a terrible curse. And I'm aware it totally IS a thing. Some people actually do it. If you are questioning choices making you happy, when will you ever feel confident?

As a person who almost continuously second guesses herself, I can tell you that feeling confident is Very Hard. I tend to be afraid that I am not good enough, that my husband will at some point 'come to his senses' and leave me. Never mind the fact that we have been together for, lemme count, almost 19 years now. If there was something about me that would scare him off, he would have figured that out by now. Same goes for me re. friendships, career, etc.

I had a think about this yesterday and realized that it is a sort of 'victim attitude', and also a self-fulfilling prophecy. If I start acting too much on my insecurities, I will end up pushing people away which will then result in me thinking: "See, I knew that was going to happen! Poor me, doom and despair".

I don't like this about myself. I want to change it.

I wrote a bit explaining what I like about this relationship so much, but then I realized I could summarize it better with a short scene conveying what I feel like they give each other.

Picture this with me:

Clinton and Elliot at a diner. Elliot is allergic to, let's say, carrots. Their orders show up and Elliot's got shredded carrot all through it, despite not being on the menu. He starts picking it out of his order. Clinton says just ask them to change it. Elliot says he doesn't want to be a bother. Clinton flags down the waitress.
"Hey, excuse me, my boyfriend's allergic to carrots. He was trying not to be a bother-"
"Oh, no bother at all. Sorry about that." The waitress takes it with a smile. "Nice top," The waitress whispers as she leaves.
Elliot's face disappears into his hands and he goes bright red as he realizes she did not mean his shirt. Clinton eats a fry with an amused smile, pushes his plate to the middle of the table so they can share until she gets back.

The chef gets mad. "He's paying for it." The waitress comes back to tell them, but they've both heard the shout from the kitchen. Clinton is firm, and sees that Elliot is now worrying about this becoming A Thing.
"The carrot wasn't on the menu."
"Clinton, it's fine."
"No, you're being reasonable. I'm not letting someone bully you into thinking sending an order back is wrong."
"It's fine. He's right. It's not fair to ask him to do more work just because I'm allergic, I'll-"
Clinton's already out of his seat. He slides into the kitchen. The angry chef is frying with a skillet.
"Hey listen, I'm trying to help my boyfriend be less shy and stand up for himself. I'd really appreciate it if-"
Chef, sotto voce; "$20 right now and I'll work with you. Only offer."
Clinton looks at the chef, pauses. Sighs. Pulls a $20 from his wallet. "Fine, whatever, just, I'm telling him it's because we asked nicely. Alright?"
Chef, nodding, takes the $20. "I'll make it quick. Because you asked so nicely."
Clinton, muttering, as he walks out of the kitchen. "Asshole." It's just loud enough for the waitress to hear as she passes.

Clinton goes back. The new order is out quick, the waitress smiling as she delivers it but frowning when she turns away. Dinner is very nice. The conversation is lovely.
The bill arrives. Elliot's order is listed twice on the receipt. He notices it when he reads it to leave a big tip for the waitress being so nice - she's the one that put his on the bill twice, to hint at what's happened. Elliot rises from the table.
Clinton follows close behind.
"There's been a mistake." Elliot says simply.
"I took the carrots out, I don't know what more you want from me."
"I would like you to give Clinton his money back. So we can split the bill fairly"
The chef turns, raises his eyebrow. "No."
"Elliot, I-"
Elliot turns to Clinton, smiles like a big labrador retriever. "I know. It's fine."
The chef folds his arms, hot skillet next to him in easy reach. "You don't scare me."
"I could, if I wanted to." Elliot frowns. "But we're just going to go home."
The chef nods, smirks up at him, blinks, realizes. "And the rest of the bill?"
"My boyfriend has already paid for our meals. Thank you."
Elliot starts to leave with Clinton after him. They pause at the door as Clinton whispers something. Clinton goes back in and gives the waitress a $20 tip and a grateful smile. Then they walk back out again.

I'm enjoying this ship a lot. My favourite romances always answer the question; "What do these two people give each other that they can't get from their platonic relationships?" Clinton has someone to reward his character growth and encourage it. A lot of that character growth was learning to be assertive without being a callous asshole. Elliot's got someone to reassure him, and someone who can be confident and assertive in a way he appreciates and will want to emulate.

There's a popular confusion of tops with doms, bottoms with subs. The mentions of top/bottom in this thread, seem to mean who controls or who goes along for the ride (dom/sub) rather than than who penetrates or who is penetrated (top/bottom). One might think this a limp distinction---by tendency, maybe so---but this disregards dom bottoms and sub tops; (Rest assured: They exist )

A lot of that character growth was learning to be assertive without being a callous asshole.
I'm sorry, but I must disagree with your characterization of callous assholery. The chef, was being a callous asshole: In fact, he'd be wholly in the wrong, at insisting on providing a different service than was advertised (And no, Elliot should not need to disclose his reasons for not wanting the alternative: Disclosing one's reasons for not wanting a particular arrangement is often-enough humiliating that even if you're OK with sharing your reasons, it perpetuates a toxic culture of explaining oneself to assholes.) The appropriate polite response in this situation would be to get up and leave, probably leaving a small tip to the nice waitstaff for their trouble. And to boycott that abusive restaurant. Not callous assholery: A basic assertion of one's dignity and rights.
On the other hand, seeking an amicable resolution with intransigent gnats is (nigh by definition) servile; Servility is a major cause of illegitimate authority. (Our apologies for the screed.)

Yeah, associating topping with domming, etc. is pretty phalocentric but then hey everything is set up to be so not hugely surprising
