I feel Claire's pain (kinda). Starting a new job in any profession is HARD.

I'd forgotten how experienced Dora is. It's unlikely that Claire will have any second thoughts, worries, neuroses and outright neuroses about this that Dora will not have encountered before!

And Claire... it's good to appreciate what you have, but it's unrealistic to always do that at 100%, all the time. Comparing yourself to others is madness, and it doesn't actually help people who are in a tougher or less appealing situation. Guilt-tripping yourself in a "I have a headache, but there are people out there living with chronic pain" way is not healthy for anyone. You're still having a headache, it still sucks, and it's OK to feel crappy about it.

It's OK to hate your job. In fact, I'd say it's way underrated as a feeling. It's a JOB. It's not guaranteed to be satisfying or fulfilling, it's a way to make money first and foremost. People who genuinely love what they do are few and far between, and it's a form of privilege.

Well.....yes, loving what you do is certainly a form of privilege, but there is a lot of ground between hate and satisfaction/fulfillment.
I'm not sure I'd say it's OK to hate your job, but I do agree it's not something you should feel guilty/bad about, if you don't or haven't had any opportunity to find something else you may like better.

Also, of course you don't need to love your job to be good at it, especially if you're smart about maintaining good career prospects. Hating your job is unlikely to result in a good performance though.

To be clear, that's what I meant - hating one's job is not a pesonal failing, nor a reason to feel guilty or ungrateful or whatever.

For most people, having a job is necessary or near-necessary, and sometimes you take what you can get. But you don't have to be ecstatic about it purely on the grounds that someone out there has it much worse.

New comic.

Is it just me, or did Hanners go a bit overboard with the spreadsheet, cloud storage, and newsletter, considering that Dora that doesn't know anything about it (and thus didn't give permission for it)?

I suspect it was a case of Hanners suggested something, Dora said “yeah whatevs” and then what you’d expect happened.

I think that Dora has pretty much given post-facto permission, here.

She clearly thinks the spreadsheet is a good idea, since she seems disappointed that she (to her knowledge) didn't have access to it, and the Newsletter isn't new information to her since she puts up the weak defense that her spam filter keeps eating it. The cloud storage is perhaps a bit iffy, and Hannelore maaaybe needs a redefinition of job title/role, since she's done all this organization...

Pennelope took over from Faye as  Assistant Manager, but she hasn't been seen in a while... did the allosaurus get her, too?

I suspect that we're going to get a series of strips where Dora asks various friends: "Am I so self absorbed that I don't bother to pay attention to what my employees are doing?"

I expect that the answer will be 'yes', especially from Penny.

Meanwhile I suspect that Hannelore needs to learn the importance of physically talking to your boss about stuff because they only notice most emails if it isn't very obviously a criss that needs to be fixed now. Maybe not even then. This is a personal experience of mine despite the fact that we have a business email system where I work so, unlike Hannelore, I'm not communicating everything to his personal email!

I'm pretty certain that is just a white lie designed to cover up the fact that Dora did not in fact know (or at least remember) about the newsletter either.

I think it’s more that Dora just doesn’t bother with the newsletters, and probably has them all neatly filed in a folder labelled “newsletters - important” by a rule she set up and forgot about.

I think it rather went like this:

Hanners: „I could put up a cloud storage for important or interesting docs. And a newsletter to keep everyone informed about it.“

Emily & Dale: „We don’t have that?“

Penny: -frowns-

Dora (distracted): „Yeah, okay, whatever.“

Hanners: „On it!“

Well.....making a spreadsheet of regulars and their orders is just good initiative and not something your boss needs to give you permission for. I'd file that under taking initiative.
Setting up cloud storage for the shop is a bit more questionable, to me that seems something the boss would definitely need to be aware of and give permission for. And even if you set it up (could be just a dropbox or something simple) with important info, then it's not something to only communicate over a newsletter.....

So...bit of both I guess?

Also, given Dora's background in website design, I am not entirely convinced of her not thinking of things like cloud storage, IF it could be useful for the shop.

Hannelore’s cloud storage is a literal cloud (of nanites, in a vacuum, in space) because Station said he had a spare petabyte or twelve she could use. .

On one hand, a favor from Station does not cost the shop anything, so no reason for explicit permission from Dora.  On the other hand, business tasks should be under business accounts with approved user access for proper hand-off & continuity.  On the gripping hand we do not want to embarrass Dora tooo much about how out-dated her web-mistress skills have become.

Has Claire's "dead name" ever been mentioned? I wonder if it, too, started with CL like Claire and Clinton?

I can't remember it, and it would be odd if Jeph did something that insensitive given the enormous care he's taken writing Claire.

I think that this strip is interesting in that it sort of shows how Jeph thinks Hannelore sees the world. There is a sort of "this is your personal wiki page" about her profile of Claire as well as the work environment at CoD (notice the mention of the spiders).

The service ferret is a reminder of just how weird this town is!

I feel like the pun was meant to work with an "uh/ih" kind of sound for the "i"? I can't make the "eye" sound make sense in the word in any accent I try.

Software engineer by career choice as a young lad, here. I can testify that after 20 years, it gets dull anyway. I think it always gets dull, eventually. But it still pays the french food (I'm french and live in France, so technically every food is french food in my case...), the mortgage and the tickets for the concerts and exhibtions.

Maybe with a heavy Southern accent from the US? I've heard "I" pronounced as "Ah" at least in deliberate exaggerations of a stereotypical Southern accent.

And since at least some Southern accents are non-rhotic, pronouncing "lever" as leave-ah" wouldn't be too much of a stretch, either? I think?

Dora may own the place, but Hanners is probably running it.

No one bring up how like her Mom Hanners is.....

Ehhh there’s a lot more to running a business than just data management and an employee newsletter

"Can't I leave a note on the blackboard to prove I read it?"

If you can explain how it works for you with an "uh" sound, I'd be fascinated.

Maybe with a heavy Southern accent from the US? I've heard "I" pronounced as "Ah" at least in deliberate exaggerations of a stereotypical Southern accent.

Yeah, okay, that works.

So who gets the latte, and who the hot chocolate?

Dora: Since when did I get promoted to Mom?

Tai: I'll call you Mommy if you want.

Dora: HUSH

Everyone else: TOO MUCH INFORMATION.

I think Elliot seems like the hot chocolate kinda guy, and Clinton is the latte guy.

Don't you think it would be amusing to see Elliot sipping from a small latte cup, and Clinton clutching onto a big hot chocolate mug?

In which Dora realises that, yes, she does have the necessary skill-set to be a mother. How could she not when you think of all the employees she's had during the lifespan of this strip? She's been 'mother' to Faye, Raven and Emily as well as (to her shock) even a few customers!

Claire is right: A polite barista in Coffee of Doom? How many times has Clinton been there anyway to have that expectation?

Clinton is just trying (and succeeding) to needle his sister.

Actually a polite barista in Coffee of Doom is nowadays the standard.

Raven introduced the concept and it stuck and spread.
