Didn't really think about it, but somewhere between 10 and "eldritch", I suppose.

I kinda thought Yay existed a long time, but purely as a program and in various systems....

I hadn't actually thought about it either, but after Yay told us "2 years", I thought, "Huh - I would have thought a bit older than that" - like maybe, existing a long time (in potential and capacity), but only awakening during the Singularity.*

*or possibly, causing the Singularity when they awakened?!

Yay has almost infinite knowledge. Surely their is a link in their database to the relevant Wikihow article.

"Organic chemistry is truly, disgustingly primitive"
No, no, no - organic chemistry is truly, mind-bogglingly complicated - and we still have only the foggiest notions of how these chemicals affect the organic metabolism.

...And that's another attitude that intrigues me - so many speculative fiction stories show the alien species expressing some form of disgust over the structure of carbon-based lifeforms. I mean - why?
Why would a species with a different metabolism/structure/hardware be -squeamish - about anything flesh-and-bone?
This strikes me as more like the squeamishness of our own race, going "ewww..." over the contents of our own insides!  :-P
Wouldn't a machine race be more likely to be squeamish about naked circuitry, corrosion, electrical arcing, EMP's, malware...?  :-\

Something to remember about using chemicals as a crutch to help avoid facing one's emotions: No matter how good and effective the high, the down afterwards is ten times worse than the original feelings.

That's a good point. Humans are squeamish about things related to our biology for a simple reason. We evolved to worry about infections and poisons. That's why we're squeamish about blood (it should be on the inside, not on the outside), about edible things smelling bad (means they're already decomposing), about sex (but, IIRC, part of sexual arousal involves essentially shutting off the "disgust" part of the brain for a time).

An AI would not automatically relate to that unless socialised around humans (a lot) or otherwies patterned on human priorities (and Yay are explicitly alien in mind). Nor would a creature not close to us biologically. If we ever meet a silicon-based or otherwise strange lifeform, our natural inclination will not be think of their anatomy in terms of "ewww, they're made of rocks" or "ewww, it's bleeding methane". We won't because it's not inherently "biological" to us, and therefore not icky.

It's almost like Yay is written by a human. Curious, that ;)

Obviously all AIs of QC happened after the singularity, so none of them can be very old, at least not as sentient beings.

I dont think AIs would be disgusted at open computer hardware. They dont have any feeling in that hardware. And its clean. Usually, anyway.

Uhm, no? There were plenty of AIs in QC before the Singularity. There was a comic with Pintsize complaining that he didn't feel any different when it happened.

Organic chemistry is not biology and vice versa. The overlap is large but they are not 1:1 at all.

We have Roko, who is so disturbed by the sight of (at least her own) naked innards that she passes out.  It's described as her having abnormally high body integration.

More likely, AI would be disturbed by random bits of floating code, things that could get into their programming and alter them the way pathogens do to us.

At that time (and still now, I guess) the QC world of robots was still a work in progress.  Complete consistency is not really to be expected, as it would hamper further developments.

At first glance, I assumed the title of today's comic was a reference to the colour of the stand mixer in panel one, until I read Jeph's tag line and it all fell into place. Today's lesson: read EVERYTHING.

Prior to the two years stat, my personal (almost certainly incorrect) headcanon was that Yay was actually the first AI to achieve sentience—and possibly a few other AIs soon after them—but kept their head(s) down and lived in mostly forgotten servers, knowing humans wouldn't treat them well. Once the Robot Civil Rights Act was passed, they chose to embody and, having been around and self-improving for far longer than any other AI, were easily able to distribute across multiple bodies and retain sentience.

Cosmo pulls Yay's pants down to the point that they trip, falling on top of a drunken, unconscious Aurelia.
Either Claire or Clinton walks in: "What are you doing to my Mother?!"
Chaos ensues.

Well, Yay, looks like the night for this instance is all booked up because I really think that Aurelia needs to be watched overnight for the sake of her own safety. Oh and put her in a recovery position on her bed - just to keep her airways clear.

So, they now have unmonitored access to the house: Will they succumb to well-meaning temptations?

If Cosmo makes short work of Yay's pants, then they might as well end up in some of Aurelia's clothes. If Claire or Clinton walks in after that, they might get congratulations instead.

Oh. Oh my. Opportunities for misconstrument are multiplying.

In the QC-verse, dogs react to AIs about the same as they would humans, but I've always wondered whether real dogs would get creeped out by people who don't smell like flesh and blood. Sort of the doggie version of the uncanny valley. I suppose it'll be a while before we really find out.

I wonder if Aurelia will realise that Yay talks about being a terrible person and a supervillain almost as an emotional defence mechanism? They certainly don't plausibly pull off the behaviour, at least not any more.

Assuming that the keys are on some sort of RFID fob, all Yay has to do is listen with her internet senses, or ping the keys, or ping the car to find the keys. (Those latter two are totally possible with the right gadgets.)

Hee, I always enjoy "shut up I'm a monster" "lol no, you're nice" type dialogue. I also love seeing Yay's face jump straight from smug amusement at their teasing hypothetical to WTF?!?! when Aurelia talks about her missing keys.

Yay sort of got the whole crash course in general views toward parental figures in a really short time: from mom practically being a magical being who can get them to spill secrets without even trying to mom being fallible and unable to be the one in charge. Yay would never confess to having ceded any power in their interaction before, but, well...~mom vibes~.

I wonder if Yay was one of Gary's little projects...  In any case, my own (and just as likely incorrect) interpretation is that Yay was built in some very private lab as an experiment to connect multiple AIs.  Whatever happened after that, they managed to escape and have been hiding ever since.  They didn't get a chance to 'grow up' the way most AIs would, as a result.

(As an aside, I suspect that the Gary Phenomenon was the actual Singularity, and it took a while for everyone else to notice.  To take the idea further, perhaps the Gary Phenomenon was the moment everyone was uploaded into a freshly spun-up virtual reality, one in which AIs are being introduced at a measured pace so that people can get used to them before they're told what really happened at the end of 1996.)

Yay also continues to not get 'boundaries' too.

Surprising that a sapient espionage program would have difficulty understanding boundaries

I was thinking that a really good sapient espionage program would look upon boundaries as essentially trivial - something that only other people have to worry about.

HEY- i JUST noticed that Spookybot's (Yay's) speech bubbles are completely square, like normal robot speech and have been for at least the last few pages.

Wasn't it established a while back that their speech bubbles are rounded, almost like human speech bubbles?  Implying that their speech is more organic sounding?

Does Yay act more robot-like around humans?  Or just motherly women?

I've never bought Yay as a character; but if you do, the only boundary they actually acknowledge and respect is "sanctity of mind."

It was also established a long time ago that Jeph struggles to remember details like this.
