WCDT Jan 17th - Jan 21st (4701-4705)
« on: 16 Jan 2022, 18:11 »

A new week has dawned.

No poll, more an open-ended question: what kind of design are Millie and Beeps getting?

---

Poor Emmett. They must REALLY like Sam if they're willing to put themselves into such uncomfortable situations.

Wait, are they dating? When did that happen?

Well, normally a matching tattoo (or spray in this case) would be indicative of that but, with Beeps and Millie I wouldn't be so sure. It's the sort of thing they'd do because they're platonic BFFs, because 'it sounds fun' or something. Maybe they literally have no idea of the implications and we are going to have a realisation strip later on!

On a related tangent, when was the last time we saw Brun?

Not necessarily.  I have one friend who was thinking of getting a matching one with a former flatmate.

I mean, doing everything associated with dating up to and including making ill-considered body art purchases declaring their connection without realizing it would be entirely in character for Beeps and Mille.

I've been out of social media since Orkut, except for WhatsApp, that's useful in my job, and some internet forums, and I feel like I'm not losing much.
Also, few years back, I considered tattooing the symbol of a vacuum tube (a penthode, to be more specific). Glad I didn't.

Beeps and Mille fit in well with the rest of the characters in this comic then! - some of whom are notoriously oblivious at times   :-D

The only non-forum social media site that's even really worth visiting is tumblr. It's a damn sight easier to curate your experience on it than most of the others I've tried. And a sizable chunk of what's on the other ones (especially tiktok) is lifted directly from tumblr[1]. It's just a shame that the new owner(s) is/are trying to broker a deal to bring in new users through Disney and other fandom promises[2].

[1] Yes, I'm aware there's several screen caps of tweets on tumblr. That one's probably a more even exchange between the two. Possibly imbalanced when considering most of the more annoying tumblrites migrating to twitter after the 2017 tumblr titty ban. And they're rehashing 2015 tumblr discourse.
[2] I don't have all of the details, but   source: The New Yorker

EDIT: Seperated out the pertinent info ftom the blog post it took too long to find during break.

As a Canadian I never really notice there is an accent untill it is literally spelled out in front of you. It looks weird but I understand everything the way it is spelt.

That's the thing about dehydration and heat exhaustion. They both sneak up on you and suddenly lay you out.

Also a couple pinches of salt can be extremely beneficial if you've been moving and/or sweating a lot and drinking only water all day and have had little to no food.

Maybe it's true that comfort is mostly in the head. So long as Emmett didn't know and understand that it was hot, they could fool themself that it wasn't hot.

I read the quoted part of your post out loud for whatever reason and it finally hit me why "Wassat" was bugging me so much. I actually do say 'wassat' when saying 'what's that' out loud, though there is a hint of a th in there.

Whenever I do km/mi conversions I have reference numbers I go by. If it's miles to km, I just take 60% of the miles (it's not the 0.62 needed for an accurate number, but it's close enough). For km to miles, I know that 5km is a tad over 3mi, so I go up from there. So 10km=6mi, 50km=30mi, etc. Even in four digit distances, it's only a 20mi deviation per 1000km, so for ballparking it works out fine.

A pleasant and comforting notion fore sure, but sadly one that is easily refuted. I've worked a myriad of jobs and can tell you if you're outside or the HVAC system is terrible, a hot day will mess people over regardless of their awareness of the temperature.

27 C is nice hoodie weather imo. Unless I'm standing in direct sunlight... but in the shade or inside, sure. I probably wouldn't have a long sleeve tee on underneath it though, just a tank or singlet.

Hard pass for me then.

I'd rather be cold than hot.

Ditto. If you're cold, you can bundle yourself up until you look like a marshmallow and no one will bat an eye. If you're hot, there's only so many layers of clothing you can take off before people start yelling.

So many people say this but it's zero comfort to me in winter. It doesn't matter how much extra clothing I bundle up in (including gloves, scarf and multiple hats!), I will still be too cold unless I'm either in the shower or under the covers in bed. Not being able to get warm all winter long is way worse than being too hot in summer for me. We don't even have particularly bad winters here from an objective perspective. Perhaps I need to move to the tropics.

Dogs show joy and fear and anger, and when I visited a sanctuary for rescued wolves, the staff told me about grief. Howling is routine and they know what it normally sounds like. One of their wolves died of natural causes and the humans were excruciated by the pain in his widow's howl.

Oof, I'm trying not to project onto Emmett here, but this sounds like dysphoria could be involved. I suffer from severe social anxiety, and I never quite understood why my anxiety isn't about embarassing myself or anything like that, but instead about just being seen or noticed makes me feel very uncomfortable.

It was only with realising I'm definitely not cis (so at 26), that I understood that what is so uncomfortable is being seen as "a man".

Oddly enough, the only larvae I can think of that's fully reliant on their parents/family are social insects. With most of those examples being from Hymenoptera.

Faye and Bubbles may have incompatible ideas on starting a family ("WE ARE WORKING ON THAT TECHNOLOGY"). They should talk this through.

I consider this strip as a reminder about why we'll never see any of the characters in QC start a family in the conventional biological way. It's because Jeph dislikes babies to the point where it's close to a phobic aversion and, because of that, he cannot draw or write them at all.

That isn't a criticism; we all have weird quirks after all. However, it is something that people need to bear in mind when addressing their own expectations for the future of the strip.

This aside, I think that Sam and Emmett are very, very cute together. They are very obviously deeply into a puppy-crush. Sam, at least, doesn't know it.

Wassat in meters?

Ooh this is bringing back memories of having to figure out what was meant by "miles", out of 12 different possibilities.
Only around 8 kilometers difference (thats...5... miles? ) - hours of Funfun funfunfunfun! :grumpypuss:

I do something similar for inches to centimeters; 65in = 165cm.

Oddly enough, speeds, distances, and temps have never been any issue for me, but weights and especially liquid I have never been able to fully internalize. From lbs to kg is OK (mostly because we also have the 500-g pound, close enough to the lbs) but anything on ounces/gallons to mL is a disaster and I've given up on it.
