Not abusive parenting, just a very unlucky run; remember Emmett illustrated a whole string of unfortunate events that they ended up being entirely blamed for mainly by dint of being the last one on the scene when the authorities arrived, because of course all the other alleged actors were safely tucked up in bed at the time, even at midday? Then they further implied that the selection provided was but the tip of the iceberg?

So yeah a whole string of not being believed, combined with a sudden move *to a completely different country* (which children are frequently wont to internalise as their fault somehow) has probably distorted poor Emmet’s view of how actions, consequences, blame, and punishment flow into each other. At least in their specific vicinity anyway.

They hardly ever fight, and when they do they don't throw things...

Do I want to know how Veronica "fights"?

Sometimes, it's pretty clear that a parent never had any real interest in their child except for the implied social contract and/or state child support money. The moment that there is the opportunity to hand over responsibility to someone else, either through leaving the family, sending them off to a distant relative or through state education, then they're gone.

Every child deserves parents. Not all parents deserve children.

Emmett may be about to realise that their mother isn't that bad after all.

It's weird how sometimes people want to go into denial for something bad that happens to someone else - even when the other person has accepted it.

I'm not sure it's really denial. I see it more like an attempt to comfort the other person, even if they don't need it.

In Quebec, it's probably even "chèque", I guess...

Jeph lives in Canada, but Sam lives in the United States. So it’s “check” to her. Emmett might call it a “cheque”, though.

Sam's story took a grim turn. You can never really let go of your relation with one of your parents. I'm 49 and I still hope my relation with my father will somehow improve, against all odds, even if I'm perfectly aware it will not, even if I stopped trying long ago.

My dad was a popcorn afficionado: he loved it and made a ritual of making it. He didn't like the microwave -- he made it in a saucepan with oil, butter, and salt, and for some reason he froze the kernels beforehand.

The funny thing is, it really was better when he made it.

My dad and I both like popcorn and, yes, go the stovetop route. And I think it tastes better when I do it, and so does my dad, and I am suddenly wondering if that's because he's told me that so I'd do it or because it's actually true

I may have been popcorn hoodwinked.

We used to have an *amazing* air popper for popcorn... made the best popcorn... and then my dad accidentally broke it (even though my mom told him not to try and pack it into the car the way he did, because it would break, and lo and behold...). We have yet to find an air popper that matches that wonderful machine...

I think that panels 2 and 3 can be summarised as Emmett saying: "I really do love you, Mom!"

Also, nothing tastes quite so good as food how your mother makes it!

Not a universal truth.  My mother was a horrible cook.

Also, re: popcorn.  Use a hand-cranked stovetop popcorn maker.  I used to use peanut oil.

Same.  Still is (since she's morally opposed to putting any flavour, aka, fat and salt) in anything.  Thankfully, it forced me to learn how to cook for myself from a young age.

More Emmett. Awww.

Also, Faye should get back to seeing her therapist, IMHO....

I totally agree, and there's still a lot to unpack in Faye's mind. Plus her therapist was a great character.

A startlingly common occurrence. Anybody know how to get that smell out of a microwave apart from time.

Depends. Do you still want to have a microwave at the end of the process? :P
