How do i get into web comicing?
« on: 23 Jan 2005, 00:16 »

I've got a few strips already drawn and i was just wondering how i could start putting them on the net and getting to be like you have.  did you start on a free comic host or did you go and buy questionablecontent.net straight away?

Thanks in advance.

I dunno about finding a webhost, but before you debut your comic, you might want to look at this.....

Jeph wrote a whole thing about "How to have a successful web-comic" or something, it was really good but I can't remember where it is. Maybe on his Livejournal or something

I think a couple of essential things for having a successful webcomic (that I've always had trouble with) is the following rules:

1) Don't be a complete idiot
2) Make sure more than five people will understand the joke (IE, avoid inside gags)
and of course:
3) Ripping off gags/plot lines from other web comics will get you sent DIRECTLY to the lowest pit of hell and you'll ****ing deserve it.

Anything I'm forgetting?

if you want a web comic:

start drawing it regularly (which is where most of us fail)

put it online (via your own server or at like keenspace or something)

Start telling people about it (IE put it in your sig here)

Don't worry about what other people tell you when you're starting up about form and content.  Develop that on your own. Otherwise you're only going to end up pandering to people and you're gonna have a rip-off strip on your hands no matter what.  The world doesn't need another generic manga/gamer comic, those genres are pretty much locked up.

Basically, do it for you, and a bunch of people will catch on if it's good enough.

The only thing i havnt got in it now is a story and some background, i'm adding different things in each comic, just testing the water.  This isnt a shameless pug of my comic but anyone who wants to check it out go here... http://www.jellycreations.com/comic/comic_home.php?comicname=kas  Then click the link to my LJ to leave a comment.  Thanks for all your help guys/girls.

Draw regularly, and POST regularly. I have a buttload of comics which I can never find or am too lazy to upload. This is my downfall.

And why bother with a story? If you are a webcomic and can go for the gag, then go for the gag.

And if you can go for the story too, go for the story.

Gags can be amusing and all (that is their inherent nature), but it is usually the story that keeps people coming back. Doesn't mean it has to be horribly in depth, but continuity is a good thing. Either that or your jokes better be damn funny to keep people coming back everyday/whenever you post.

Perry Bible Fellowship is my favourite example of this. "The Far Side" worked pretty well too.

Well, I'm still learning all about this webcomicing business, but pretty much what I did was
a)start setting out a design, and thinking of some gags, actually based around myself and my flatmates
b)When I had a few strips made, put them up on my livejournal for comments
c)Put a few jokes up on one of the forums I frequent, mainly insulting the n00bs, spur of the moment thing, with a link to my livejournal for more comments.
d)Once I thought it was worth it, and I was doing a new comic every day or two, I set up a keenspace account, that you can find at http://tog.keenspace.com, and made sure all the people who read it new where it was.
e)Told a few people around the livejournal communities about the comic, set up a hit counter, set up a buzzComix account, and watched the votes come in.

This has taken me, within a couple of weeks of setting up the keenspace account, to place 150 on buzzComix at the time of writing. Not too shabby methinks.

[Edit]Not really trying to plug it, I just thought that my advice would have a bit more oomph if it had proof.
