HERE IS WHAT I NEED:
some obscure indie pop recommendations for a valentine's day mix.

HERE IS WHAT SHE IS INTO:
pavement (her favorite)
metric (http://www.ilovemetric.com/)
tilly & the wall (though she may just be impressed with the percussionist)

um.. well any indie pop really. gave her a mix tape with Say Hi To Your Mom and she loved that. has Nada Surf on her blog thing, along with This Busy Monster and Little Champions, whoever they are.

was thinking i could introduce her to Enon and The Moldy Peaches, but that's all i can think of that she doesn't already know.

BONUS QUESTION FOR YEH GUYS: how do you guys find indie music? besides what people you know recommend, because the people i go to school with and work with couldn't care less. it's fanzines and label samplers, right? what do you guys recommend for that?

THANKS.

Just give here chocs, flowers and a good shagging. Sod the mix tape, far too much effort. Cynical? Moi? Pesish the thought...

i like that.

but i also like to see her smile when i give her such a thoughtful gift. hopefully i'll give her at least 2/3 of those things along with the mix tape. ..and i'm not hoping for the flowers.

Go to pitchfork and download a bunch of mp3s.  That should do the trick.  Listen to them first, though.

Some Camera Obscura (of Scotland) might work, maybe some Slowdive or My Bloody Valentine if you don't mind straying from the pop realm a little. Also for Mp3 freebies try:

Stephen Malkmus (and the Jicks) (guy from Pavement's new band)

I'll think of less obvious things when I'm more awake. :)

I'm still bitter that I have never got a mix tape from anyone ever.

Links for Malkmus:

http://www.stephenmalkmus.com/
his site: it's half 4 in the morning and I am stupid - I can't work out how to even get into it!

http://www.dominorecordco.com/artist.php?artist=48
his corner of a record label site - there's a free mp3 you can download too if that helps.

http://www.matadorrecords.com/music/mp3s.html
there are some more free mp3s from him here too

http://www.dominorecordco.com/videos.php?video=81&artist=48
a nice video to watch

New Pornographers, while more on the power end of pop, are still pretty poppy and fun. Broken Social Scene has its Pavement-esque moments, though they are all usually a lot more bombastic and less messy.

Rilo Kiley
Lullaby for the working class
Surferosa
Secret Machines
Pretty Girls Make Graves
Hefner

valentines day depresses me, even though I should be too cynical for it to do so...

Even if you don't get what you're looking for she'll see the effort you've gone to and that should impress her more than anything. If it doesn't, she doesn't deserve you!

Errr, soapbox time.

Not sure if anyone in the US actually knows about it, but Australia does actually produce music that isn't Kylie Minogue. And New Zealand for that matter, though I can't even think of a singer from there who would be recognised in the States.... correct me if I'm wrong of course, I have little understanding of the dynamics of indie over there (or indie in general, I just think it's deliberately obtuse?)

But yeah, as far as down under indie goes, Goodshirt fucking rock, indie pop as it truly should be, in my opinion. Oh and Sekiden, though I dunno if you could find their stuff at all? And Iron On....

For the sake of brevity, I'll stop for now, but this isn't the last you've heard of me!!!

I am just getting back into music, but I have grown attached to Stephen Malkmus (google for him). I also think Death Cab for Cutie has some potential songs that might work.

Find new music: streaming music on woxy.com

On the v-day thing. Well, things are different for me (married 12 years), plus v-day is also my birthday. So, that just means that I have to give more than most, since I must overcome the romance factor of both her v-day gifts to me along with any birthday gifts.

Like said on PvP: Romance is the currency of sex for the married man.

A mix cd just doesn't seem all that romantic (and my birthday is to be used for romancing - you can use jesus' birthday for getting your bone on) - its just too easy to scrape some MP3s and throw them into the burner. Couple that with tickets to a midnight cruise (depends on your location) or a night of good dining (meaning your table has more forks that you have on your hands) and dancing.

Flowers? Nah, they are just a way for the florist to screw you over for some extra bucks.

Chocolates? The traditional box is too much "I didn't want to think about a gift" - homemade chocolates work much better and are not that difficult to make (I did that for the girl that became my wife when we were in college on an electic hotplate in my dorm room - major points).

You want something exciting? Think different, not just the same old thing.

well uh.. it was going to be a mix tape, which is a little different i think.

though i would still have to burn some/most of the tracks onto cds to record onto tape. though quite a few would come from my album collection.

also about the cruise and all the forks, i'm 16 and live in a cultural void.

thank you everyone for your suggestions you are all awesome.

Bah, don't let age restrict your choices too much. You are correct that you don't have access to the cash, but the fact is that the vast majority of your cash is disposable, while the vast majority of mine goes to Mortgage, 401(k), taxes, EIRA (3 kids), etc.

Cruises are really location dependent - and if you have a nearby river really are not that expensive. I think the last time we went on the Ohio it was something like $50-75/ticket. Plus that included drinks and a full meal.

Making your own candies. That should only set you back about $15 at the most (assuming your parents have a double boiler).

Paper roses are fairly easy to make and have worked well for me in the past. You get to avoid the total jerk around by the florists this time of year and show a great deal of effort - for actually taking very little time.

If you have access to a DVD burner a collage of pictures taken of the two of you together - or her by herself - is a real winner. That is a a real A for effort along with personal attention.

Its time, energy, and personalification that matters more than money. If you put thought and time into the presentation it will carry far more weight than if you just throw a bunch of money and expect a solid return on your investment.

To steal a line from Apple: Think Different.

Bah, I live in Cincinnati - the Queen City of Cultural Voids.

Couldn't agree more.   The Shins are the way to go for all occasions.

I can vouch for Goodshirt too - try "Sophie" by them.

REM's ultra sappy "Be Mine."

Powderfinger - "My Happiness"

Bright Eyes - "you will, you, will you, will?"  (or something like that)

Air - "Cherry Blossom Girl"

Dresden Dolls - "Coin-Operated Boy"

This is probably all coming a little late, but better than never as they say.

O man Goodshirt is my favorite band, they are like an amazing soundgasm. Unfotunatly I never really got enough money to buy Fiji Baby, which I really want quite badly. It costs way to much to ship it and stuff.
