A friend of mine recently told me a story about a kid who walked past her while singing some indie song out loud. When she looked at him, he said "What? Don't tell me you've never HEARD of that song before??!" It led me to believe that there may be more of these people out there: kids with boomboxes or their car radios turned all the way up, blasting their indie rock, and harassing pedestrians with their snobbish comments:

"You're going to LOVE this song in 6 months when the band sells out!"

"This song is too good for your mainstream ears!"

Thought I'd share. End random thought process.

It's unfortunate, but I used to hang with these very same people. They did, however, annoy the crap out of me.

Really? I blast the weather or NPR or something whenever someone else is playing music really loud.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Heh, pretty silly.

That said, I have always wanted to drive around in a car with the speakers cranked up like crazy and the song 'Pedeadstrians' by Cattle Decapitation on repeat, just leaning out the window and staring creepily at people. Revenge for all the shit you hear getting cranked out of your average chavmobile mainly, plus it's got a fun chorus to sing along to. All about running people over and reversing over the corpses.

"My automobile a human blender, chunks of viscera splatter my fender" etc.

I like to drive around in my Ultracar blasting Big Black. Unfortuneately said car has an ultra (read crap) stereo rendering it mostly useless as an assault weapon.

That is well.. interesting.  I mean people have asked me what I was listening to , I'd tell them and then they would say "I've never heard of them." but I can't say I've  sat there and been like "OH MY GOD YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE?!"  People just don't like that, and let's face it, I like making/having friends.

My personal weapon of choice is Rammstien up loud normally with a window slightly open.

Driving down west street at 2am when all the crap clubs chuck out.    (yes muffy,  I have done this.)   I risk the wrath of drunken chavs and smackheads doing that.

A friend of mine and myself used to drive through town with the windows down at about 10pm listening to things like Fleetwood Max, Dire Straits and Genesis. 'twas most amusing. I shan't hear a word spoken against Dire Straits or Fleetwood Mac though, slag off Genesis all you like, they were crap.

To set the scene- my home cities local music "scene" website. Within that site, the "Clubs and Venues" forum. A resident hipster types:

Quote
death from above 1979 motherfuckers, play it now for you will most definatly be playing it later, you want to be cool right? Get in with the cool kids.

Almost the same as ,"you'll love this band when they sell out!" Having just read this thread, I giggled, because I know that his tongue will only have been half in cheek. However, I guess there's nothing wrong with giving the local "one set fits all" DJ's we have here some pointers. Really, every set at my local "alternative" dive is near identical.

Then they're really not alternative...  time to throw on some Frank Yankovich to make 'em think the really cool folks have gone way past them, and are into retro-Polka revolution :-)

Though I kind of sympathise with djs - I've just spent a night doing the local indie scenesters hot spot and it's pretty demoralising to see people leave the dancefloor for Cursive and beg for f*cking oasis and the libertines - crowd pleasing is essential to stay in a job - if a formula works, the promoters keep to it, but I try and be different... I get more fun from the one person who loves a song than from the songs that everyone dances to...but then a night needs both kinds

Apologies, I needed a mini rant, and this isn't against anyone, I just wanted to justiy myself I guess.  Plus it's late.

And I didn't mean to kill the thread.

Man, the only two people I am around that drive is my brother, who insists on blasting exclusive Euro electronica as loud as possible when I'm with him and my friend who blasts metal. I'd be blasting indie too if I had a fucking car! I'm in university, I can barely afford food!

This idea of snobbish hipsters saddens me.

If someone likes the music I listen to, I get so psyched to tell them about it.  I like distributing a new band I've just found out about because I want more people to be able to experience an awesome new sound or whatnot.

Music isn't exactly something you should keep to yourself.

It's always aggravating when someone looks down on you just because you listen to something different. It's no better than those annoying punks in high school that made fun of you because they said the bands you listen to "sold out." It just happens that most of the self-titled "Hipsters" are even bigger jerks.

I always like sharing whatever music I have on-hand, and if they haven't heard it before I just let them listen. If your self-image depends on you knowing a more obscure band than someone else (and hoarding it for yourself) that's just sad.

Just listen to what you like, and if thy don't know it, share it. No need to make an ass out of yourself over it. :)

What kinds of asshole towns do you people live in? The last time anyone I knew (and I mean anyone, not just friends/family) pulled some kind of credibility contest regarding music tastes I was smoking seedy bowls behind the swing-set at recess. 99% of the time I could give a shit less what people around me listen to and I'm pretty ambivalent about sharing what I'm listening to, unless we're like, trapped in an elevator for 56 hours and our sex organs are all worn out.

I live in WASP paradise. Suburbia filled with rich, white (see : Snobby asshole) kids with nothing better to do.

Unfortunately, the "mainstream" here is composed of mainstream rock or rap. Everyohne likes to align themselves to a single genre of music and god have mercy on the souls of anyone who doesn't listen to THEIR genre exclusively. Load of bullshit, if you ask me. It's too limiting to insist on listening to one genre (and looking "down" on whatever anyone else's listening to). Listen to whatever appeals...keep an open mind to what doesn't.

Now I'm just bein a preachy bastard. :)

People generally ask me what I'm listening to in the car a lot and its usually, The Fall, Can, Polvo or Neutral Milk Hotel. I also like to listen to the forementioned Big Black, Gang Wizard or various noise (sometimes rock) bands when in the car but not when others are around as I don't personally know one other person who can withstand the stuff.

I'm always trying to share music. I do enjoy the all-out assault on the common-room stereo at school, and I've made some conquests with it: a few Therion fans, a few Nightwish fans, even someone I got into folk metal (by some bizarre chance). However, there are a few people at my school who have this interesting sort of internal code. Expressed in terms of boolean logic:

10 IF Music$ = Guitar based  then goto 20
20 If Music$ = On_radio1$ then EXECUTE "Tolerate" ELSE "Complain for one song then turn it off and listen to the fucking radio"

I mean, given that people complain about Iron Maiden or Danzig, it's tough going, although you can get a bit of extreme on if you time it well and make sure certain people aren't in the room.

there you go, that's what i've been doing the past few years.
although, if they are so bold as to ASK me what i am listening to, then they have asked for it...they will get the band's name and history and why they should immediately go out and buy the same album cos it'll change their life...
