Count yourselves lucky- any good bands that come to DC play in the clubs that you don't want to be NEAR at night, and anywhere safe seems to play shite. Any tips if you're in the DC area?
Show i'm psyched for- Chevelle&Crossfade at 9:30 club

uhhh... 9:30(9:30 is lame though) and the black cat... if you are too much of a wussy for the U street area you're fucked.

Ratatat at the black cat  on the 26th of feb....  Their show as intense- for the encore they had a whole bunch of people up dancing on the stage(from the crowd) and after the 3rd song of the encore, mike stroud(the guitarist) was like "uhh...i think the shows over, but i dont know what to do there are all these fuckin people on the stage!"

....whoa rynne totally already posted that janks...  if you saw me at the show i would have been the really tall dude with  shoulder length hair, but who the hell is gonna remember someone from a show?  and was it just me, or did The Doubles suck really badly, and wasnt the lead singer of the cell complex really funny with his hand movements to the cello?

good times.

Okay, here are the shows that are coming up for me in the window of March 22 to April 22, with ones I have tix for already in bold:

1) Taste of Chaos Tour - March 22, Saskatoon - I am pumped to see MCR and also Killswitch Engage. YES.
2) Death From Above 1979 - April 9, Regina - Okay, aside from the fact that they are even playing Regina, I love You're A Woman, I'm A Machine so when I found out about this yesterday I almost shat myself.
3) The Weakerthans - mid-April, Regina - I like 'em. What?
4) Alexisonfire - mid April, Regina - They were awesome last time and they will be awesome this time, especially since Rise Against is opening. Although I loved Moneen, who used "KC Accidental" for their soundcheck.

YAY!

Last show I saw was Secret Machines and Moving Units, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

But it only partially made up for my dumb ass sleeping on the couch the night of the Mission of Burma show at the Iron Horse in January.  I don't think I'll ever stop regretting that.

Next show is Missy Bly in Albany this Saturday.  March 10 is Alexisonfire, and ya, they are really awesome.  Saw them in October, and can't wait!  Other than that, I'm working on getting Arcade Fire tix for their show in Montreal in mid-April some time.  Same goes for Magnolia Electric Company in Boston.

I've just been to see Raveonettes, Dogs and the Boxer Rebellion -
I was shitting it, after  I threw up on the guy from TBR last time we met, but it all turned out to be very civil, all the bands were really cool (actually, dogs were a bit shit, but never mind) and many people bought me drinks.
The downside, however, was the fact that the Queens of Noize were DJing it - for the uninitiated, QoN are a couple of incompetent female DJs who have made their name by being glorified coke-addled groupies and shagging their way through most of the UK's up and coming 'cool' bands. Not only were they evilling me, they spilt beer over my mate and generally acted like the biggest gimps known to mankind...grrrrrr.
Still a really good gig, though, and Raveonettes played loads of new songs which were ace.

Just went and saw Les Georges Leningrad last night in Iowa city. Was a good time, though the several mismatched local openers seemed to go on forever except for the first band who called audience members up to sing as their singer was sick. LGL weren't as over the top as some reports alluded to but they were still quite weird and quite fun. A lot of their songs just turned into insane dance outs with quite a bit of moshing going on. The band were a lot less 'rock' live. Good time. Probably gonna go to Xiu Xiu at the end of the month.

Dude, this is an old thread! Thought I'd ressurect it  to say that

I just saw Willy Mason.

And he was amazing. His guitar wasn't tuned, he kept going way way off key, had been drinking since 5 in the afternoon, and was sooooo good for it.
There were a few gimps shouting out dumb stuff, my favourite was
"I want your babies!"
"What? I don't have any"

such a change from the last time he played here and about 30 people politely nodded to his songs...

I saw Mates of State, Printed Circuit and Cowtown last night. Cowtown were probably the best I've seen them, the added keyboard player and Nash even singing for one song really spices them up. Printed Circuit were pleasant enough but nothing exciting, and Mates of State turned in a damn good (and predictably super-cute) performance. Bloody good night.

I went and saw Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System, Head of K records) play at a local coffee house. It was just him and an acoustic guitar, very informal. It was fun to hear him play his songs and banter about random things. The openers were local and I only saw part of one set, though it was pretty good.

I saw him live once.  He singled me out of the crowd and made fun of me.  I still don't know how I feel about that.

Last show I saw was all local, Deathamphetamine (death/grind), Wasteland (hardcore), Northern Aggression (bluegrass), and She Cries When It Rains (emo-parody).  The next show I will see will be the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, where, among many, many others, I will see Danzig, Three Inches of Blood, Strapping Young Lad, Nile, King Diamond, Black Dahlia Murder and Cephalic Carnage.  I am particularly excited for Danzig, SYL, Nile and King motherfucking Diamond.  The unfortunate thing about this fest is that 3/4 of the bands playing suck balls.

On the subject of the festival, I think I may go for one day this year. To see Morrisey. Partly because I quite like Morrisey, partly just so I can say I have.

I went to see The Fiery Furnaces last week. It was not at all what I was expecting and I went away a little disappointed. I mean, seeing them play for 40 minutes nonstop while doing various bits and pieces of songs from all of their albums was kind of cool. But I would've preferred full songs instead of just getting 2 minutes of "Blueberry Boat" followed by a minute of "My Dog Was Lost" followed by the end of "Mason City" followed by another 3 minutes of "Blueberry Boat" and on and on and on like this.

I went to Transistor Transistor, Fuck U Is My Name, Eagle Eye and Mock Heroic last night. Mock Heroic were great, nice and raw performance. Definitely worth checking out if you like a bit of the old screamo. Everyone says Eagle Eye are fully shite so I stayed downstairs drinking, and then FUIMN turned in an okay set. Nothing to get excited by, but it would be nice to dance to I guess. Transistor Transistor were just as dull as last time so after watching a few songs it was back down to the bar.

Iron & Wine is coming to my town next month as well, but for the price ($17.50) and my admittedly diminished fandom, it's not worth it.

I did, however, see Muse w/ Razorlight on MTVU's Campus Invasion this Sunday. Providence College. AURAL ORGASMS ALL AROUND!! Kickass lightshow, amazing energy, spectacular music. It doesn't hurt that I got Howard's battered drumstick, Bellamy's scraped-up guitar pic, and an invite to hang out with the guys and partake of their impromptu post-show barbeque. Couldnt stay very long, but tis a night to remember.

4) Alexisonfire - mid April, Regina - They were awesome last time and they will be awesome this time, especially since Rise Against is opening. Although I loved Moneen, who used "KC Accidental" for their soundcheck.

UPDATES:

-The Taste Of Chaos tour was kind of disappointing. MCR was good, as was Senses Fail, but Killswitch Engage sucked ass. Also the Used were good ol' cookie-cutter emo-pop (blargh), but at least they had a fantastic light show, as well as a cover of "Under Pressure" that they performed with MCR.

-DFA 1979 was an INCREDIBLE show. First, they had Throw Rag, which is a band that plays music best described as "sailor punk," with not only the costuming and sound but also all the homoeroticism you would expect. It was fun to watch both that and the washboard player. Yes, you read that right. Then controller.controller, who are an amazing band. Ominous but energetic live performance. And of course, DFA1979, who had (during the opening acts) seemed weirdly disconnected from the crowd but proceeded to take the stage and kick the ass out from underneath us. If you can see these guys live, I suggest you do.

-The Weakerthans are amazing. I mean, I hadn't heard that much of their stuff prior to the concert, but it was such an amazing show. The opening bands were awesome: Sylvie, a local band who I referenced in the "share your local band" post, and the Constantines, who sound like what Springsteen would sound like if, instead of like welders and stuff, his target audience was skinny indie kids who like The Arcade Fire. The Weakerthans themselves were fantastic and full of love for the audience and performing, period; the best moment of the show was when they were full-flight, in the middle of a song, just beaming. Also I got interviewed after by CBC Radio3.

-I had to sell my AOF ticket. :(

1) The lead singer of it started wearing like a sailor hat, cowboy boots, a checked suit jacket, a black undershirt, and a neon green sailor tie, and by the end it was just him, his underoos, his boots and his hat. He also danced suggestively with the washboard player, and then moved into the crowd, almost completely naked, to stand there like a scenester with his arms crossed and watch the washboard player do a 3-minute washboard solo.

2) Said washboard player was an angry, fat, possibly psychotic man who yelled, tore his undershirt, used his washboard-playin' spoons to throw his underarm sweat into the audience, and owned (as you probably guessed) a washboard with (as you probably didn't guess) two cowbells attached.

Pretty much the best opening act ever.

I saw Figurines and My Friend George tonight, and as that probably won't mean a lot to you folks, I am going to give a somewhat detailed report.

We (me and my little brother) came at 8 o'clock, but the show (the start of Figurines' Denmark tour) first started at around 10, so we were pretty anxious, when the warm-up band My Friend George came on. They were good, a sort of slacker surf rock, is as close as I can put it, both the drummer and the lead guitarist sang and they had a song called 'Happy Tuna', bonus points for that. I'll give them three stars out of five.
Then Figurines came on and they rocked. They play energetic indierock with cryptic lyrics and they were as tight as a very tight thing. The show was near perfect; of course they mostly played songs from their new record Skeleton, but a few old ones from their debut Shake a Mountain was there too. It is ner impossible not to sing along to Ambush with the fantastic line "Chase them down because you are angry". It ended perfect with a steaming version of Debate Cos it's Over. All in all only one minor thing could have been better and that is if they had played Follow the Pioneers, a favourite of mine, I give them four and a half stars plus my soul :)

*wonders if anybody is going to read that*

I never quite got over my Suede fixation.

Very good, spexy, zombie dancing and hot band.
Sweaty as hell though, the place is like a furnace :(
not a big fan of the support band Fallout Trust, but not too bad I suppose.

I know I'm kind of late to the game here, but:

I went and saw Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System, Head of K records) play at a local coffee house. It was just him and an acoustic guitar, very informal. It was fun to hear him play his songs and banter about random things. The openers were local and I only saw part of one set, though it was pretty good.

Holymoly am I jealous.  I have the biggest voice-crush on Calvin Johnson.  Especially when he sings with Doug Martsch in the Halo Benders.  WHOOODOGGIE.

The last band I saw was the Pixies on their reunion tour.  Which was AGES ago.  I used to go to a show at least twice a month but then the best music venue in town shut down.  Needless to say, I was heartbroken.

I saw Death Cab for Cutie on campus several months ago, and of course it rocked!
