i will tell you, as an observer of hipsters, not a single damn one wears a trucker hat.  it's just not done.  it's bad.  expensive jeans, perhaps.  trucker hats, no.

Where are you from that you've never seen a hipster in a trucker hat?

I see them all all the time in Brooklyn especially, and alot in Manhattan clubs. In New York, if you can't tell.

They love them some Von Dutch.

Do hipsters even exist in the UK? I don't think I've ever seen one. Although if I have, I probably mistook them for an emo.

my fault, clicked "post new topic" as opposed to "reply" or something.  was not paying attention.  i must be looking at different hipsters, apparently.  all the hipsters i know scoff at those wearing trucker hats.  trucker hats are no longer cool.  perhaps the hipster you know are just behind the times.  my hipsters are the most cutting edge hipsters.  we cultivate our hipsters in wombs lined with vintage pavement posters, with speakers pressed against the hipster-breeder's tummy playing blueberry boat.  our hipsters then grow up in little playpens that play "i'm so glad i'm an alpha.  my tightpants make my ass look great.  stupid kids, i saw arcade fire before pitchfork ever heard of them."  our hipsters rock faces.

Hipster dress code in the UK is slightly different - it kind of evolves from the electroclash scene, and involves:

Leggins
Ballet shoes/converse
ultra short pleated skirt, over leggins, usually a vivid colour (green, pink etc)
thick white PVC belt
off the shoulder/backless top, often striped
big hoop earrings
hair straightened to within a micrometre o its existence, often in mullet shape or 'scruffy' fringey do which takes a good 3 hours to perfect

For guys, it's all about the hats - bowler hats, top hats etc, all worn inside, at gigs and clubs...and also the fringe and how much of the face it obscures, and the possibility of eyeliner...

The only true way to spot a hipster on grounds of appearance is to look for the scowl - it's a kind of smirk which boasts 'I'm so much better than you' which threatens to drop at any second someone appears with just that bit more hipster cool than them.

I spend waaaaaay too much time around hipsters.

Yar. One of my female friends once made a conscious effort to dress emo to go see her (emo) boyfriends band. She took off her boots, put on some converse and donned a random baseball cap and a scarf. Her failure was that she was still wearing an Omen skirt, 2 layers of torn fishnet tights, a black and neon-pink striped jumper and spike bracelets. The  scarf was also neon pink and black striped. The hat was too small for her and from a local theme park. She looked like what I suppose she was, a crazy car-wreck of alternative fashions on legs.

The above sounds like the majority of people at the art school i attend. Considering my total lack of hipster dress code knowledge, i don't know if they are hipsters or trying to be hipster. Either way, they still sneer at the entire world.

a small question from fashion-stranded Portugal: does the converse you talk about mean the converse all-star tenis shoes? I didn't know they were related to the hipster or emo styles... I personally like them, but aren't they too much early nineties for people who are supposed to be one step ahead of everyone else?

Yup, that's the converse..
In England, owning a pair of converse  seems to be a trademark shoe for every indie/emo/throwback grunge kid in the world - it's the easiest way to say 'Hey, look at me! I like different music!'

I considered starting up a night with a 'no converse' policy, not because I have anything against them - at all - I just thought it would be funny to see 90% of the people get turned away at the door.

Then I figured that if I ran an indie night, I'd need more than 10 people there.

I resisted the pull of converse until last year  -  my feet are the most awkward size and shape in the world (blame arthritis), and few shoes fit comfortably. Couple that with a mild Strokes fixation, and I gave in, but I like how they look so I don't see a problem, even if they are now more hole than shoe..

If I remember correctly hipster trucker hats/ John Deere caps were kinda a couple years ago. I don't know what the current trend is as Iowa's hipster news has like a 2 year delay on it.

i have spunk!  i stopped wearing converse, after wearing them since i was a wee little tot, because i sat down, and looked, and in a group of ten (count 'em) eight were wearing converse.  it was bothersome.  so now i'm rocking the onitsuka tigers.  they are far superior and keep my feet from hurting.  i was tempted to get puma's, but i was going to maintain my distance of |---| from blatant hipsterism.

I've been under the belief that once Ashton Kutcher started sporting trucker caps on Punk'd, they immediately became uncool.  Not that I ever had the sense to realize they might be cool back in the day to actually wear one.

In other goings on, my offspring will be listening to Slanted & Enchanted in utero (whenver that day comes).

we don't have a whole lot of hipsters here.  and if we do, they look the same as the emo/sort of punk kids.  they all wear converse (though hipsters wear funny colored ones while the emo/punks stick with black), band shirts, blazers, and a lot of bracelets/wristbands.  the only way you can tell them apart is by what band shirts they're wearing - interpol vs. fallout boy, franz ferdinand vs. green day, etc.

i will also mention that i wear a corduroy blazer/leather jacket, (usually indie) band shirt, and my plaid converse just about everyday.

my plaid converse are the coolest shoes ever, in my humble opinion.

I wear surplus West-German army Paratrooper boots. They have steel toe-caps and heel-plates, are water-proof to above the ankle, and are, apparently 'Anti-Statisch'. They're also insanely comfortable. I've been wearing some form of military boot for a good four years now. Never really liked trainers.

Hipster girls, or anybody for that matter, who wears footless tights need to go pick a fight with a grizzly. Or me. Either way, go die.

Hipsters guys here in Bristol are all about the scarfs and tshirts, irrespective of the fact its colder than a spice girl reunion right now. For the girls it's gotta be miniskirts & legwarmers. Think Propaganda/Ramshackle go-ers. *shudder*

That's the work of the man with less than normal amounts of head. He had quite a few screws loose by all accounts (believed that he wasn't human, among other things) and his death saw the quality of the bands lyrics and songwriting rise by quite staggering amounts.

He also, ironically, used the stage name 'Dead'
