Bink 182...music has died!
« on: 23 Feb 2005, 04:24 »

I just read  this:
Quote
Whatever, the world's longest adolescence has come to an end with the news that Blink 182 are going on indefinite hiatus (that's "splitting up", Blink 182 fans):

"For over a decade, blink-182 has toured, recorded and promoted non-stop all while trying to balance relationships with family and friends. To that end, the band has decided to go on an indefinite hiatus to spend some time enjoying the fruits of their labors with loved ones."

In possibly unconnected news, scientists at a lab in Nevada reported that the collective IQ of the planet jumped by ten per cent yesterday.

I would feign being sad, but I'm still gutted after Busted, my brain has no more room for grief...

In a small way, it is sad, for me at least. They were the first 'real band' that I listened to when I young. Got me into the whole guitar thing.
There will always be a small part of my shriveled black heart for them.

Today I shall celebrate!  Unfortunatly this also increases the chances of there being a Best Of CD which is a downer.  Especially since I think they'll rip off The Suicide Machines and Type O Negative and call it Least Worst Of Blink 182.  They've always ouvershadowed the equally scewed up yet completly more talented Dwarves.  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

i'm kinna indifferent, back in the day (around 9th grade) i was big into korn and blink, but there recent stuff i didn't like so much, blink went emo and korn went..well....i'm not sure yet. in a way its sad, but in another, both bands were kind of out staying their welcome (if you can put it like that).

I'm glad I discovered the world of music comparatively early. And I'm old enough for the Offspring to have been the band that got me into "new punk", and despite including at least one blatant money-making scam on every album, at least they a) Make it obvious that they are taking the piss, and b) Fill the rest of the record with awesome songs, thereby retaining a good degree of credibility. Or at least, I think so.

"I think it's healthy to take a break. We did the same thing four years ago. Blink took a break, and Boxcar [Racer] happened and that's the same way with this," Barker told KROQ's Kevin and Bean. "We're taking a break and letting everyone be creative on their time off, and have fun and come back when it's time and when it's ready and right. I believe there's great things in the future."

"When it's time and we get our fix from our kids and we get enough quality time with our loved ones, then things will be right again and maybe we'll have a rad new Blink record."

~ travis barker

this is the record where blink-182 delve into post-punk, opting for some appealingly sullen moodiness, off-kilter hooks, lots of sonic textures

Since I love post-punk (and old Blink-182), I enjoyed this album to the "x-treme."

Some of their stuff sounded alright...but there was no talent involved. Just compare them live to their studio recordings. Blink playing live is the most God-awful screeching noise ever. Their talent relied on computers. I, for one, won't miss 'em.

As my friend Zach has said numerous times "The problem with Pro-Tools is that it makes shit sound good, but even pretty shit is still shit."

As far Blink 182 goes, I'm on the fence. I don't like a lot of their stuff, but they do have songs I like. I'll chalk this one up to C'est la vie.

I think it's brilliant. They just gained a ton of fans who will claim to be 'longtime fans' and 'deeply saddened' by the end of Blink 182, and they'll make tons of money on the comeback album, because that's the way it works.

All my friends were very into them back in high school.  The HS band tried to turn "what's my age again" into a Christian song (I went to a religious high school).  I don't remember what it was about, but it was quite bad.  I'll have to say that I enjoyed, and still enjoy for nostalgic reasons, the seemingly lighthearted rock of the late 90s/early 00s.

I don't really think you can blame them for that. It's much the same as people doing degrees they don't like just to make a lot of money at the end. They maybe think that money>doing things that are faithful to themselves, and although it's a crappy philosophy, it seems that more and more people are subscribing to it.

Yeah I'll agree to that.  I hate the whole punk (har) scene these days, and all those bands sound the same.  Blink are probably one of the larger culprits to be honest, at least with the more recent stuff, but I do remember when I was 14 rocking out to Enema of the State, and the band kinda' cracked me up with the video to All The Small Things so yeah, in a way it's sad to see them split but really, it's about time.  There's always going to be more Sum Charlotte 182's to carry the torch.

Unlike Simple Plan and Good Charlotte, Blink at least knew how to write a catchy song here and there. Unlike most people who admit to liking them who say their early small label stuff was good, I liked them a lot as a major label studio creation. They were one of the worst, laziest live bands I've ever seen, though, and the juvenility of the lyrics and their "sense of humor" eventually wore me down.
