Birthday Flames
« on: 31 Mar 2005, 06:09 »

Well Today is my dad's birthday, so I whipped something up for him.

I drew this one up real quick last night.  Sketch on paper on the train home, then scan/print/ink/scan/colored.
After that I added in the flames and smoke on the background.

My wife says the flames and smoke look great.  Emphasis on GREAT!  I personally think they look like crap that I could have drawn as a kid.  (granted I only spent about 10 minutes tops on them)

What do you all think?

(also I need a new font.  Chalkboard looks too much line Comic Sans) :P

I think in the context of the piece as a whole, the flames look great. The smoke seems to get heavier as it gets farther from the flame, which seems backwards.

The lighting also seems...not right, considering there's a flaming inferno there... (not that I'm exactly a master of lighting...in fact, I try to avoid it all together...)

As for your desire for a new font, go try blambot.com.

yeah.  I'll be the first to say I suck at the shading.
I didn't notice the smoke getting heavier at the top, so I guess I'll have to take a look.  I whipped it up real quick, so I didn't pay too much attention.

ah yeah.  I just looked at the pic again.  My lighting is my usual front lighting.  oops! :)

thanks for the comments!
Also thanks for the link.  I'll be checking that out today.
