Comfort Eagle is one of my favourite albums.

Resistance is useless.

It is useless to resist.

Aw man. <3 Cake. I remember when The Distance was a huge hit on the radio. *le sigh*

What do you guys think of the new album? I either love or hate a song, no real inbetween. It's the first album I haven't liked as a whole. For three plus years in the making, it really should have been much better. I hate that they've fallen victim to that "uber-produced" sound when a band gets big, but at least it was delayed an album or two longer that usual.

they strike me as very unexpectedly.  i've never bought an album and i don't follow the band at all, but whenever i hear a goofy funky quirky pure pop song on the radio and find myself massively grooving to it, it's always cake.

I like a few of the albums I've heard, so they're somewhere inbetween "meh" and "awesome."  Because, I don't work like that and I can never settle for the choices given to me.

Fashion Nugget and Prolonging the Magic were both fine CDs, but I actually thought Comfort Eagle was pretty abysmal. I don't think replacing the drummer with a computer was the most constructive move ever.

The new album is great, though. I loved about half of the songs instantly,  but the other half grew on me after awhile too. It's even more synth-heavy than Comfort Eagle, but moving even further in that direction makes the drums sound way less out of place than they did before. It's definitely a very top-heavy disc, though. The first three tracks are killer!

The two dudes who left after Nugget went on to form a really awesome band called Deathray.

You thought Comfort Eagle was abysmal?

Like, okay, "worse than their others" would be okay. But I don't think Cake can even come NEAR "abysmal."

EDIT: I just got PUNK'D!

Sorry, I did that obnoxious thing where I added more information to my post while you were responding to it!

I'm exaggerating. The album just didn't mesh for me, but there were still some good cuts, though! Opera Singer was probably my favourite.

Loooove Cake, but their new album... meh.  It just didn't get me going like all the others.  They are coming here in a few weeks though.  I still haven't decided if I'll go and see 'em.

Do it, you won't be disappointed. They're one of the few bands that can pull off their album sound live. He still uses the same guitar and amp as he did on Motorcade of Generosity. Plus, they've got energy.

I can tell I'm going to get shot, but Cake absolutely drives me bonkers.  In the bad way.

I really loved Short Skirt, Long Jacket when it came out like everyone else and spent all my time listening to Gong the Distance and other such Cake classics.

And then eventually I just realized it all sounded the same and that I wanted to shave my ears off with a cheese grater.  The style was cute once, but the quality of the music is just so obnoxious that I couldn't stand it repeated several times over.

And that is the end of my Cake-dom.  Bleh.

I agree with you. I like some of what Cake does, but it's not something I can listen to for long periods of time. For me Soul Coughing is better then Cake.

Is there any over lap in Soul Coughing and Cake fans or are the two mutally exclusive?

If you're going to bring Soul Coughin into it, you may as well bring in The Eels. That's how I see it, anyway. Different.

Anyway I thought Cake nothing special until I dated a girl that was massively into them. Through the first months of our relationship she didn't push them on me, but it was usually playing at some point through the week in her car. I got deeper into the albums and found some really great songs to latch onto. Then I listened to those over and over, and started to hear the intricacy of what I was hearing. Then I branched out to other songs, other albums, and soon I couldn't get enough.

Radio singles are just that, take them as they are. But I never ever judge a band off a single. No wait I take that back, I don't usually judge a band off a single. Nope wait, I rarely don't judge a band off a single, yeah. But anyway, they're anything but annoying. Listen to Motorcade of Generosity. Waaaay different than "Going The Distance", their first single which is off of their third actual CD. So go get those first two!

And if anyone actually read all that, cool.

Cake is great. I loved that their first 3 albums all had their own style, while still meshing into a coherent band sound. I like both Comfort Eagle and Pressure Chief, but I can't help being slightly disappointed that their sound hasn't changed or evolved since Prolonging the Magic. I think they've gotten a bit too settled into their "thing" nowadays. Still, a lot of quality, quality stuff.

The lyrics on Motorcade of Generosity are so off-kilter and unique.

I guess we could bring the eels into this; I don't see how they are related though.

I've always felt that they were comparable with Soul Coughing being the better band.

I loved Fashion Nugget, although a bulk of their first two records was written all at once over a month and a half. So the newer stuff is change and evolving. I think this band is smart, and they have great sense of catchy hooks.

-meep-  I appologize, as I don't own anything by them, I just have a friend who is obsessed and played some of her music for me, which I liked, so I wasn't sure which was the proper name Eels or The Eels as I saw it earlier in this topic...

They play terrible live, they don't have incredible musical talent, and the lyrics are never incredible. But goddam do I love Cake. They just go to show that all you really need to make a band is the ability to work together. I know it sounds corny, but it's true.

And I personally thought Comfort Eagle was lots of fun. Even if it wasn't a terrific album.
