Car stereo that plays Mp3 cds is purchased and installed. The burning of CDs must commence. Help me with my choice. I require some more relaxing ones for those traffic jams and something a bit more up-tempo for when I'm late and fuel consumption is not an issue.

I'm wondering if I can pull off a mix CD that veers between indie, rock, grunge, metal and rap with any degree of success.

OF course, I could just listen to Radio2, but that would rather spoil the point of spending money on a somewhat pricier than originally envisaged car stereo.

So, what be your driving music and please help me in the search for mine.

Awesome... I love my mp3 cd player in my car.
When I'm driving, I mostly listen to instrumental and electronic stuff so I probably won't be much help to you.

I made an awesome driving mix where the tracks' tempos increased as the tape went on.  If someone else was driving, I could watch them speed up while the tape played.  :)

ahh, electronica, Aphex Twin-esque stuff perchance? Do like a bit of that...

Bush will most likely put in an appearance, maybe some Soundgarden, Cypress Hill, Bloc Party, Zep, Maiden. We shall see.

Electric blues is always great driving music - think Muddy Waters.

I'll try and think of a list of songs from other genres, but one that should be an automatic inclusion on any driving soundtrack is "Roadrunner" by the Modern Lovers.

Keep in mind that I do a lot of long distance driving and mostly in the darkness hours, so I like a bit of a 'musical score' to my driving.  It lets my mind wander.

If you're looking for Aphex Twin-esque stuff (his Ambient works are excellent along with the Richard D. James album) then find some Gridlock (or Dryft... a variation of), Chris Clark, Polygon Window, Squarepusher, Scanner and of course some Boards of Canada.  Just those will get me from coast to coast with no complaints.

For the more up tempo days, its usually Chemical Bros., Dj Keoki, Underworld, Juno Reactor...
My driving music taste differs a lot from my casual listening preferences.

I'm in the process of making a 90s collection of stuff for my road trip in a few weeks, but i don't have the free time i was hoping for.  Its a pretty involved task to make an mp3 mix  ...  ugh..

Dude... Props for the meatloaf. and you cant forget queen. my faveorite driving tune is Bohemian Rhapsody. my faveorite driving memories are singing loudly to that song in a car pulling a waybes world. and oh yes I headbang at the headbanging part

1. you love it
2. you know every word
3. you can mimic every guitar the whole way through

those three things are the secrets to great driving music

I'm pretty sure that air-guitaring my way through Powerslave would be a sure-fire way to cause a major traffic accident. Listened to Bloc Party, Faith No More, Kaiser Chiefs & Bush on the way to work today. Was good.

I generally listen to less rawkin stuff in the car, stuff like They Might Be Giants, Ben Folds, Moxy Fruvous, stuff like that. Though air guitar-type stuff is lots o fun too!

Once when putting together the music for a road trip with my brother, I put in some Parliament Funkadelic.  He had to explain to me that though it was fine music, it was just about the worst thing imaginable to drive to - because you end up with the car swaying rhythmically all over the road, as you jerk the steering wheel around in time to that sweet, sweet funk.
