Neo-New wave? O.o''

So says Mr. Radio man. Of course, being only sixteen, I don't have too much experience of music------at ALL.

Allan Cross of 102.1 calls bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery, The Killers(die), Le Tigre, and Metric "Neo-New Wave". I have no clue what this happens to mean, only that they sound like old bands like New Order, and I happen to /like/ this general style of music (discluding The Killers).

Could any of you musical geniuses impart to me some knowledge of OTHER bands who keep to this genre that I might be interested in?

Basically it means they're re-hashing stuff that went before (New Wave).  Given that "New Wave" was a pretty useless term in the first place, "Neo-New Wave" must be the most pointless descriptor of music ever coined.

If you're interested in that kind of stuff, then go back to the originals.  Try the brilliant X.T.C. singles collection, Fossil Fuel.  Also check out Marquee Moon by Television . . . I don't know, countless others.

Lumping Le Tigre and Metric in with The Bravery is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Lumping them in with each other is pretty stupid, unless the category is "awesome music" or I guess "bands with female vocalists" or okay so there's a lot of categories, but genre-wise they have nothing to do with each other.

And yes, "Neo-New-Wave" is a stupid name. Next thing you know it'll be "Nu-Wave" and then there'll be nothing for it but a chainsaw.

Heh, I can definetly see the problem in adding a neo/new before any genre everytime it changes a little or remixes. Perhaps a logaritmic solution could work? Like Neo^3 Wave, hehe.

They didn't add 'neo' to RnB when it turned into shit.

Probably not, been as Nu means New Urban. I cant see it going all ghetto like Korn did with Alt Rock. But it needed the chainsaw taken it it about 2 years ago, if not more.

I thought the chainsaw was for cutting limbs off the offending bands or cutting down trees so that they fall on them....

I'd beg to differ.  Television are most certainly post-punk.

Oi, some people manage to keep their genre labels mostly in order. Just the mainstream doesn't.

Just a note, 'twasn't me; it was Allan Cross of 102.1(Toronto)

A further note---I am /impossibly/ confused by all this. I just need some lively, spunky music with a good beat and possible(not neccessary) punk-appeal which, I am aware(don't bother telling me), is not really available in any of the bands I listed, it's just optional.

Whoever mentioned the Talking Heads, I STRONGLY Reccomend that to the 163rd power and a half. The talking heads are one of the best bands ever and David Byrne is a genius. In fact, go rent the Stop Making Sense concert. Now.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

That was my point exactly.  When exactly did punk stop, post-punk start, and new-wave begin?  Unfortunately, the interweb is not the best medium to convey tone.  :)

Television can't be post-punk because they were among the influencers, not influencees, of punk.

Here's my understanding of the inane genre designations:

PUNK: punk.

NEW WAVE: another name for punk, but it later became a term for  bands associated with punk that diverged from the stereotypical punk sound, and, eventually, just about any pop/rock of the late 70's/early 80's.

POST-PUNK: punk-influenced art-rock.

Also, I'd like to multiply those XTC and Talking Heads recommendations times infinity. Goodass bands, whichever of the above categories you want to stick 'em in.

Just to clarify something from my original post: I wasn't recommending Television because I consider them to be New Wave, I was recommending them because they seem to be a heavy influence on a lot of bands around nowadays.

As you were.

well, my favourite new wave bands are Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, and Depeche Mode...and those last two could also be described as synthpop...or...dance...so...jeepers.

Tears for Fears! Le /whoo!/

=cough= Okay, so I only knew who they were /after/ watching Donnie Darko and trying to figure out who sang the original version of the song at the end. They still own you.
