What's your worst musical tragedy?
« on: 13 May 2005, 22:03 »

Has a friend borrowed and never returned a precious album?  Has your car been stolen with your complete collection in one of the seats?  What's your worst musical loss?

Mine: My sister's car was stolen with a few cds of mine on board.  (That was the real tragedy, ne?)  This was some time ago, so now I can't remember which they were exactly.  I believe Radiance and ShadowStalker were among those lost.  I am certain I replaced them.

More recently, but less tragically:  When my fiance and I broke up, he still had the majority of my possessions, including all my cd cases and a few cds that couldn't fit in my carrying case (obviously the ones I didn't miss too much).  Grar.

=pouts= ALllllllllllllllllll my Thursday CDs, confiscated by my parents, who were thoroughly convinced that I was turning into "some whiny, wrist-cutting emo kid"--only slightly paraphrased from what they actually said.

I had every CD, too! I had Waiting, and Five Stories Falling, and Full Collapse, and War All The Time....and now I don't.

Awww...my housemates occasionally threaten to confiscate my Bright Eyes CDs for the same reason, but are fully aware that I'd probably stab them in the eyes if they tried.
Just get hold of some really smutty electronic music (i.e Peaches) and play that really loudly, and if your parents complain, tell them that it makes you happy and sexually confident - surely, they can't want you to listen to bland, inspipid emotionless music?

On topic - I've lost so many CDs and records, my worst one (at the time) possibly being all the tapes I had of Manics rareities, all neatly collected onto 3 cassettes, one of which mangled and the other two disappeared.

October 2003, someone broke into my house and stole all of my CD's which wouldn't be so bad, because I had them all backed up on my computer. Which had also been taken.

When I was younger, i was obsessed with the Banjo. I loved banjo music to death. I even had an old record with nothing but banjo music on it.  My saddest day was when my father finally got sick of the record and broke it, telling me go listen to somethig else, like heavy metal.

And here I am now.

Ahh, it was my Celtic collection (Loreena McKennitt, David Arkenstone and Darby Devon among others) Anne Lisher, and all my Mercedes Lackey (what can I say, I LOVE her books and thus love the songs that go with them).

All of them are pretty much what I call Filk, so nothing hard or what most 'rents would classify as occult.  Mention magick once and that's it I guess.  It was a sad day.

Off topic, I listened to the Inkubus Sukkubus samples you posted a while back and enjoyed them greatly.  I'm going to have to pick up some of their stuff!

I actually had CoF's "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh" stolen from me.

That's probably not a HUGE tragedy, but the only album anything negative has ever happened too.

Oh and once when I was younger (like in Jr High) I scratched up a Weird Al CD so bad I couldn't listen to it anymore.  :(

I'm a notorious stickler for protecting my collection. Whenever a new CD arrives I burn a copy of that pretty quick and take it around with me instead of the original. I've taped a lot of my LPs too, though I've fallen behind a bit on that.
Worst thing that ever happend to me was a roommate spilt beer on a new a brand new Fire Show CD whilst I was away. I made him replace it though, he tried to get out of it by saying the disk was still playable but it was covered in gunk and the artwork was ruined. Plus Fire Show are an all time fave of mine so I was pretty mad with him about it.

Not *my* tragedy, per se, but a tragedy that occured to me:

When I was first getting into music in general, I was really into Metallica (this was a bit after the Black Album came out, though I prefered their older stuff).  My aunt asked my mom what kind of music I liked, so she could get me a Christmas present.  When my mom said Metallica, my aunt was like, "Aren't they devil worshippers that tell kids to kill their families?"  For Christmas, my aunt gave me a Paula Abdul cassette.  :(

Within a week, said Paula Abdul album had been exchanged for Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger.  Within a month, my uncle asked if I could tape the Paula Abdul album for him, which forced my mom to borrow the album from a coworker.  :D

Of course, by the time my cousin was old enough to get into music, my aunt had no problem buying him Korn and Slipknot albums.

A few summers ago, I had a ticket to what turned out to be the last Elliott Smith show in New York, at Northsix (which is a pretty small club)

On the way to work that day, I sprained my ankle REALLY really badly and was told by my doctor that I was not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES to go to the concert, since standing for that long would mean risking (more) serious tissue damage.

That sucked.

Sounds like I really do need to send you some music, Simulacra.

I prefer Loreena McKennitt's "The Highway Man" to "Lady of Shalot" although both are favorite poems of mine.

Are you a Lackey fan?  If you recall all the songs she mentions in her books, such as those talking about the feats of Vanyel and those written by Leslac, she's actually written songs to go with them.  And the songs have instruments like lute and hammered dulcimer.  Tis heaven.

I have an original vynl (please don't bitch me out if i spelled it wrong) copy of 52nd Street. Yet the record player is broken.

Also, my sister snapped my copy of Running With Scissors and threw it out.

Erm, I used to enjoy listening to the Voodo Glow Skulls, who are a terrible band. Does that count as tragedy?

I had to rebuy the My Morning Jacket CD after I lost it. I had a near tragady when a couple of people almost stole Rage Against the Machine, Mozart, and something else on a school trip.

Better keep 'em away from your parents. They actually are somewhat occultic.

My Finntroll - Visor Om Slutet CD has a scratch that goes all the way through.

This mortifies me. I will have to buy another copy. Even though I have it backed up. For one, the CD design itself is beautiful. For two, it's one of the best albums ever, and I need it on CD if I am to listen to it on my walkman in my long, nocturnal rambles through the forest whilst my MP3 player is off getting repaired.

Duly noted.  Of course it's been a while since I had things taken away for being occultic, and my mom has gotten over even bothering to check what I'm listening to anymore, but it's probably still a better idea not to scare her.

Well, I mean, all the members are practicing wiccans. They write songs about witchcraft (both real and classic cliche witchcraft, because they are somewhat tongue-in-cheek) and express a decidely anti-christian bent in some songs, which criticise the church for things like witch burnings (duh), the crusades and child abuse. But certainly no immature 'GOD SUX' type sentiments.

Personally, I think the lyrical mixture of sex, vampires, nature worship and silliness* is hellaciously awesome.

*They do a cover of "Can't Get You Out of my Head" with altered, morbid lyrics, and who can forget their tribute to 25 years of punk: "Vampire Punk Rockers From Hell".

I'd sort of got that impression from things you'd said about them, and, well, from "Beltaine."  And I tend to think that poking fun at religions (especially your own) is healthy.  It's good to be open-minded.  Unfortunately, wicca is still a sore topic around my house.

Scenario = Family of fundamentalist Christians find out their daughter has been practicing wicca under their noses for years.  Chaos ensues.  Imagine all the horror you can.

Although I'm not wiccan anymore, it's still kind of a sore spot for the rents.

I left my big cd case with about 45 of my cds on the plane about a year and a half ago. It was horrid. I had a couple hard ones to find in it too, like my Asian Man Records comps which are hard to get without mail order.  The second worst one would have to the fact that I lent my ex-boyfriend my Mars Volta, Dismemberment Plan and Alkaline Trio cds and never got them back. PISS'D!

I'm just very forgiving, given time.  Lots of time.

The Pratchett loss hurt the worst because, one, it was the hardest to replace in its entirety, and also because I just didn't understand what was evil about it.

Oh... ouch... the loss of Alkaline Trio cds ;_;  I sympathize entirely.

I worried about that for a long time, because I had 200+ CD's in my car.  So I got an iPod, I'd rather that get stolen and be out $300 then all the CD's get nabbed and be out $2k

No kidding though, I ended up having to order The Light Fantastic on the inertnet.  I hope one of the books lost wasn't Pratchett's work with Gaiman, Good Omens.
